Suzhou Brings Kunqu Opera Showcase to London

  • Suzhou has showcased one of its premier art forms at a special Kunqu Opera event at the Garden Museum.
  • Named an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2001, the opera is more than 600 years old and is known as the mother of Chinese operas.
  • It is famous for its refined flute music and exquisite movements timed to every word.
  • "Kunqu Opera is one of Suzhou's most unique cultural treasures that all visitors must experience," said Rudong Wang, head of the international communication and cooperation department at the Suzhou bureau of culture, radio, television and tourism.

Vice President Inaugurates Mahabahu Brahmaputra River Heritage Centre

  • A British-era bungalow on a hillock that used to be the 17th century military office of the Ahom rulers was converted into a heritage centre depicting life along the Brahmaputra River.
  • Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu inaugurated the Mahabahu Brahmaputra River Heritage Centre on Guwahati's Barphukanar Tila, meaning Barphukan's Hillock. A Scottish-type wooden bungalow standing since 1850 was renovated and converted into the heritage centre.
  • Barpukhan was a post equivalent to Governor General created by Ahom king Pratap Simha or Susengpha (1603-1641). The hillock by the Brahmaputra, mentioned in ancient scriptures as Mandrachal, was from where Ahom General Lachit Barpukhan launched the Battle of Saraighat in March 1671 to inflict the most crushing defeat on the Mughals.
  • Captain Archibald Bogle, posted as the Assistant Commissioner and Collector of Kamrup district in the 1850s, had the bungalow built. Post-Independence, it continued to be the Deputy Commissioner's Bungalow until 2011.

Gandhi Museum Inaugurated at Noakhali in Bangladesh

  • On the occasion of the 152 birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the renovated Gandhi Museum was inaugurated at the historic Gandhi Ashram Trust at Noakhali in Bangladesh.
  • The inauguration was done by the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh Dr. A. K. Abdul Momen, Law Minister Advocate Anisul Huq and High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh Vikram Doraiswami.
  • Mahatma Gandhi had visited Noakhali in 1946-47. He toured hundreds of villages during his four month stay in Noakhali to estbalish peace in the area which was suffering communal violence in thosse days.Gandhi Ashram Trust was established to propagte the Gandhian ideals of peace, non-violence and communla harm.
