Amrita Sher-Gil's 'The Story Teller' Becomes most Expensive Work by Indian Artist Ever

  • Fetching a whopping Rs. 61.8 crore, avant-garde artist Amrita Sher-Gil's oil on canvas 'The Story Teller' unseated Sayed Haider Raza's 'Gestation' and became the most expensive work of Indian art sold at auction worldwide.
  • The 1937 artwork, sold at Saffronart's 'Evening Sale: Modern Art', was among the 70 plus art pieces by eminent artists including M. F. Husain, V. S. Gaitonde, Jamini Roy and F. S. Souza, featured in the auction.
  • It was August 2023 that Raza's 1989 'Gestation', also an oil-on-canvas painting, was sold at Rs. 51.75 crore by Pundole's auction house in Mumbai, becoming the most expensive Indian artwork ever sold at auction.
  • Born to Indian father and Hungarian mother on January 30, 1913 in Budapest, Hungary, Sher-Gil came to be known as one of the greatest avant-garde women artists for her oeuvre.

Karnataka's Hoysala Temples in UNESCO World Heritage List

  • The Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysala — the famed Hoysala temples of Belur, Halebid and Somananthpura in Karnataka were added to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage list. This inclusion marked the 42nd UNESCO World Heritage Site in India and came just a day after Rabindranath Tagore's Santiniketan received this distinguished recognition.
  • The temples were finalised as India's nomination for consideration as World Heritage for the year 2022-2023. The 'Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysala' have been on UNESCO's tentative list since April 15, 2014.
  • All these three Hoysala temples are already protected monuments of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
  • The sacred ensembles of the Hoysalas, constructed during the 12th and 13th centuries are represented here by the three components of Belur, Halebid, and Somnathapura.

India's Santiniketan Makes it to UNESCO's World Heritage List

  • Santiniketan, the town in Birbhum district of West Bengal, where many years were spent by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, became a part of the UNESCO World Heritage List.
  • Santiniketan was established in 1901 by the famous poet Tagore. It has functioned as a residential school and centre for art which has its roots embedded in ancient Indian traditions and carries a vision of the unity of humans across religious and cultural boundaries.
  • In 1921, a 'world university' was set up at Santiniketan which called for unity of humanity or "Visva Bharati". From a long time, India has been trying to get a UNESCO tag for this cultural site.
 

Ukraine's Kyiv, Lviv Placed on Heritage 'in Danger' List: UNESCO

  • Major historical sites in two Ukrainian cities are in danger of destruction due to the war with Russia, the UN's heritage body UNSECO said.
  • They include the iconic Saint Sophia Cathedral in the capital, Kyiv, and the medieval buildings of the city's Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastery site.
  • The historic centre in the city of Lviv was also placed on UNESCO's List of World Heritage in Danger.
  • It said the conditions to fully protect the sites could not be met.
  • Faced with the risk of direct attack, these sites are also vulnerable to the shockwaves caused by the bombing of the two cities.

  • In a formal ceremony held in Ferozepur, Punjab, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann made a significant announcement that marked a profound tribute to the valiant Sikh warriors who gave their lives in the historic Battle of Saragarhi. A state-of-the-art monument, dedicated to commemorating the martyrdom of 21 brave Sikh soldiers, will grace the landscape of Ferozepur, with an ambitious timeline of completion within six months.
  • To ensure the timely completion of the monument, Chief Minister Mann personally pledged to monitor its progress in the coming months. He made it clear that any unwarranted delays or instances of corruption during construction would not be tolerated, with strict actions promised against those involved.

Ancient Idols, Pillars Found at Ram Janmabhoomi in Ayodhya

  • The remains of an ancient temple were found at the Ram Temple site in Uttar Pradesh's Ayodhya, where the excavation process is still underway for the construction of a grand Ram Mandir. The remains were mostly in the form of pillars and idols informed the General Secretary of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra, Champat Rai.

Researchers Discover 24,000 Years Old Palaeolithic Cave Art in Spain

  • Archaeologists made a significant discovery of Palaeolithic cave art in 'Cova Dones' or 'Cueva Dones', a cave site in Spain.
  • With over 100 ancient paintings and engravings believed to be at least 24,000 years old, this discovery can arguably be considered one of the most important finds on the Eastern Iberian Coast in Europe.
  • The 500 meters long cave located in near Valencia is an often visited site for locals, hikers, and explorers. Despite this, the existence of Palaeolithic paintings remained unnoticed until researchers made this remarkable discovery.
