India to Host National Dolphin Games for Art and Cultures in 2023

  • The International Delphic Council, based in Berlin, Germany announced the National Delphic Games in India to be hosted in 2023; encompassing arts and cultures from 36 States and Union Territories to celebrate the vast diversity of India's cultures and their artistic expressions.
  • Slated to be the largest such platform in India, this promises to be a powerful medium for artists and craftspeople to showcase their talents and get honour while being a feast for art lovers.
  • With a presence around the world, the Delphic Games have been hosted in 7 countries in 3 continents and has created a platform for the dialogue of arts and encounter of cultures to infuse a sense of tolerance, co-existence, co-creation, human values for a peaceful and harmonious world.

Annual 'Madhavpur Mela' in Gujarat

  • The fair is held in the coastal village of Madhavpur, around 60 km south of Porbandar, and celebrates the marriage of Hindu deity Lord Krishna with Rukmini.
  • President Ramnath Kovind, after inaugurating the annual Madhavpur Mela, said that the five-day cultural fair is a "festival of uniting people of the country through feelings". He also expressed hope that the annual cultural fair will have a special place in the traditions of India.
  • Madhavpur Mela begins on Ram Navami, the day marking the birth of Lord Rama as per the Hindu lunar calendar. Various rituals of the marriage go till Trayodashi, or the 13th day of the month of Chaitra in the Hidu calendar.

PM to Launch 'Pradhanmantri Sanghralaya', Gifts of Nehru to be Showcased

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 14 will inaugurate the "Pradhanmantri Sanghralaya (museum)", which acknowledges the contributions of all previous Prime Ministers of the country while a redeveloped Block I will also exhibit a number of gifts received by first PM Jawaharlal Nehru, which have not yet been part of Nehru museum.
  • The inauguration of the museum will coincide with the birth anniversary of the architect of the Indian Constitution Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar.
  • The "Pradhanmantri Sanghralaya" is an endeavour by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to acknowledge the contributions of all his predecessors irrespective of ideology or tenure in office.
  • The logo of the building represents the hands of the people of India holding the "Ashoka Chakra", symbolizing the nation and democracy.

Sarhul Festival 2022 Celebrated in Jharkhand

  • Sarhul is the festival of the New Year celebrated in the state of Jharkhand by the tribal communities as part of the local Sarna religion. It is celebrated in the Hindu month of Chaitra, three days after the appearance of the new moon. It is also a celebration of the beginning of spring. The word "Sarhul" is connected with tree worship. It is a festival where nature is venerated.
  • Sarhul is celebrated by many tribes in Jharkhand, but most notably the Munda, Ho, and Oraon tribes. While nature veneration is an important aspect of the festival, there are also many cultural programmes that are enjoyed along with it.
  • Among these many cultural events is"Baa Porob", the festival of flowers and the worship of the Sal Tree as well as a special Sarhul dance.
  • The festivities around Sarhul are made even more special with the many festive delicacies that are cooked and enjoyed, such as the rice dish called "handia"', a baked or dried fish dish called "fish sukha".

Rajasthan: Gangaur Festival

  • The Gangaur festival was celebrated in Rajasthan and some parts of Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and West Bengal. It is one of Rajasthan's most important festivals and is observed with great fervour across the state.
  • The women worship Gauri, the wife of Lord Shiva during the period of this festival which is from March 18 to April 4.
  • This festival celebrates the harvest, spring, childbearing, and marital fidelity.
  • On the first day of Chaitra, the day following Holi, this festival begins and continues for a period of 16 days. For a girl who is newly wedded, it is mandatory to observe this festival. Also, unmarried girls fast during this festival for 16 days and eat only one meal every day. The festival ends on the third day of Shukla paksha of the Chaitra Month. Throughout this period Gangaur Melas are held.

9th-century Sculpture of Lord Vishnu Recovered from Jehlum River in Pulwama

  • In the Kashmir Valley, an ancient sculpture of Lord Vishnu dating back to 9th Century was recovered from River Jehlum in Kakapora area of the Pulwama district. Some labourers while extracting sand in river Jehleum in Lelhara Kakapora area of Pulwama district, Jammu and Kashmir found an ancient sculpture from the river. After finding the sculpture, they contacted the local police who rushed to the spot and took the sculpture into their possession.
  • The sculpture is a three headed Lord Vishnu and is made of black and green colour stone, is a unique sculpture of the 9th Century, was later handed over to the Department of Archives, Archaeology and Museums of Jammu and Kashmir.
