RS Passes Post Office Bill to Amend 125-year-old Indian Post Office Act

  • The Rajya Sabha passed the Post Office Bill, 2023 that seeks to repeal the 125-year-old Indian Post Office Act and consolidate and amend the law relating to post offices in the country.
  • According to the proposed legislation, the central government may, by notification, empower any officer to intercept, open or detain any item in the interest of the security of the State, friendly relations with foreign states, public order, emergency or public safety, or upon the occurrence of any contravention of any of the provisions of any law for the time being in force.
  • The enactment of a new law in place of the Indian Post Office Act, 1898 is with a view to govern the functioning of the post offices in the country and provide for a simple legislative framework to facilitate the evolution of the post offices into a network for delivery of citizen-centric services.

Lok Sabha Passes Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2023

  • The Lok Sabha passed the Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2023 to repeal the Legal Practitioners Act of 1879 and amend the Advocates Act, 1961.
  • The Bill was introduced in Rajya Sabha by Union Minister of State (independent charge) for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal on August 1 and was passed by the Upper House on August 3, 2023.
  • The Bill is part of Central government's endeavour to repeal all obsolete laws or pre-independence Acts that have lost their utility.
  • It proposes regulation of the legal profession by only the Advocates Act, 1961 and repeals the Legal Practitioners Act, 1879, while retaining a provision dealing with touts in courts.

After COVID Break, Centre Approves Fourth Phase Roll-out of GIAN Initiative

  • Past its brief discontinuation during the COVID period, the Ministry of Education rolled out the fourth phase of the Global Initiative of Academic Networks (GIAN) initiative, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's pet project to rope in eminent scholars from across the world to teach at Indian universities.
  • Global Initiative of Academic Networks (GIAN) initiative in Higher Education was launched in 2015.
  • The Central government has spent at least Rs. 126 crore in payment to support foreign faculty's travel and honorarium since the inception of GIAN. Each foreign faculty member is paid a lavish sum of $8000 (Rs. 7 lakh) for a week of teaching and $12,000 (Rs. 12 lakh) for conducting a two-week course.
  • As per reports, the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA), after evaluating the scheme, recommended its continuation.

PM Modi Launches Scheme to Provide Drones to Women self-help Groups

  • Narendra Modi inaugurated the Pradhan Mantri Mahila Kisan Drone Kendra, a scheme to empower women self help groups by providing them access to drones for agricultural purposes.
  • The scheme will enable women self help groups to use drones for crop monitoring, pest control, soil testing, and irrigation. He said that the scheme will also enhance their productivity and income and make them self-reliant.
  • Women self help groups will be provided with 15,000 drones in the next three years and the women will be given training to fly and use drones, the PMO said, adding that the initiative will encourage the use of technology in agriculture.

Cabinet Extends Free Food Grain Scheme for Five Years

  • Amid polls in five states and with general elections just around the corner, the Union Cabinet cleared the extension of the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY), which aims to provide free food grains to 81.35 crore people under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), for five years beginning January 2024.
  • The scheme is estimated to cost the government Rs. 11.80 lakh in subsidies in five years.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the extension of the scheme, which was to end this December 2023, during election rallies in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh in November.
  • The Union government had launched the PMGKAY in April 2020 in the wake of the Covid-19 outbreak. Under the PMGKAY, an additional quantity of 5 kg of free food grains was provided to every person on top of their NFSA entitlement of subsidised food grains.

Union Cabinet Approves Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan

  • The Union Cabinet approved the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN) to focus on 11 critical interventions through various ministries.
  • The scheme, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi will have a total outlay of Rs. 24,104 crore. The Central share will be Rs. 15,336 crore and states will contribute Rs. 8,768 crore.
  • Seventy-five communities located in 18 states and the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands were categorised as Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs).

Karnataka's Shakti Scheme Records over 100 cr Free Rides Worth Rs. 2397 crore

  • Karnataka transport achieved an incredible feat as the state transport has started free bus services for women as Shakti Scheme, offering the service to over 100 crore users since its launch in June 2023. 'Shakti' is one of the five schemes promised by the Congress government to the people of Karnataka before the assembly election.
  • As par reports, a total of 1,004,756,184 rides were taken by women under the Shakti Scheme from June 11 to November 22 in Karnataka state. The stats are based on the number of free tickets distributed by the state-run road corporations in Karnataka.
  • The Karnataka Transport Department stated that the free tickets are valued at a total of Rs. 2,397 crore.
