Police Commemoration Day
India marks Police Commemoration Day on October 21 every year to remember the policemen who died in an ambush by Chinese troops at Hot Springs, Ladakh, in 1959. The day is dedicated to paying tribute to the bravery and service of police personnel who protect the nation.
On October 21, 1959, during heightened tensions at the India-China border, a group of Indian policemen on a reconnaissance mission at Hot Springs in Aksai Chin were ambushed by Chinese forces. Ten officers were fired upon without provocation. The attack led to the deaths of several policemen, and their bodies were returned 23 days later.
In January 1960, the Annual Conference of Inspectors General of Police decided that October 21 would be observed as Police Commemoration Day. This day serves as a reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made by police officers to safeguard the country.
