World Asteroid Day

World Asteroid Day is observed every year on 30 June. It is a United Nations-sanctioned day for public awareness of the risks of asteroid impacts on the world. The day is observed with a view to educate the common public about the risks of asteroids and the opportunities in the field.
Asteroid Day was co-founded by Stephen Hawking, filmmaker Grigorij Richters, B612 Foundation President, Danica Remy, Apollo 9 astronaut Rusty Schweickart and Brian May, Queen guitarist and astrophysicist.
In December 2016, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/71/90 and designated June 30 as the International Asteroid Day. The date was chosen to observe the anniversary of the Tunguska asteroid impact over Siberia, on June 30, 1908. The idea to mark the day was proposed by the Association of Space Explorers which was endorsed by the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS).

International Day of Parliamentarism

The International Day of Parliamentarism is celebrated every year on 30 June, the date in 1889 on which the Inter-Parliamentary Union IPU was founded. The Day was established in 2018 through a United Nations General Assembly Resolution.
Instituting an international day for parliaments is particularly important at this critical time for parliamentary democracy, when people are losing trust in political institutions and democracy itself is facing challenges from populist and nationalist movements.

International Day of the Tropics

International Day of the Tropics is observed annually on June 29. The event highlights the importance of the tropics and the environmental and socio-economic challenges faced in these regions.
The James Cook University of Australia, in collaboration with 11 other research institutions, submitted the first State of the Tropics Report, launched in June 2014. The report looked at several environmental, social and economic issues to understand whether life in the tropics was improving.
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) took cognisance of this report. It adopted the resolution A/RES/70/267 in June 2016, and designated June 29 as the International Day of the Tropics.

National Statistics Day

National Statistics Day is celebrated every year on 29 June to mark the birth anniversary of late Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis. Professor Mahalanobis has an immense contribution to the fields of economic planning and statistical development in the post-independent era.
Mahalanobis was also a member of the first Planning Commission of India. In 1950, he established the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) with a Statistical Laboratory set up. The first National Statistics Day was celebrated in 2007.
The theme of National Statistics Day 2022 was 'Data for Sustainable Development'.

World MSME Day

World MSME Day is observed every year on June 27 all over the world to highlight the significance of MSMEs and how they play a crucial role in being the backbone of the country's economy. Micro-Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises are the organisations that do not usually employ more than 250 employees, however, are responsible for creating more than two-thirds of all jobs globally. World MSME Day 2022 recognises the potential of MSMEs and their role in strengthening the economies globally. World MSME Day 2022 also aimed to raise public awareness regarding the contribution of MSMEs to global economic growth and sustainable development.
World MSME Day was first marked by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in its 74th Plenary on April 6, 2017. The decision of observing World MSME Day came after the International Council for Small Business (ICSB) 2016 World Conference declaration on the urgent need to recognise the MSMEs role in the global development.
The theme of World MSME Day 2022 was 'Resilience and Rebuilding: MSMEs for Sustainable Development'.

International Day in Support of Victims of Torture

The United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture is an international observance held annually on June 26 to speak out against the crime of torture and to honour and support victims and survivors throughout the world.
The day was selected by the United Nations General Assembly for two reasons. First, on June 26, 1945, the United Nations Charter was signed during the midst of World War II – the first international instrument obliging UN members to respect and promote human rights. Second, 26 June 1987 was when the United Nations Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment came into effect.
The decision to annually observe the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture was taken by the UN General Assembly at the proposal of Denmark, which is home to the world-renowned International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT).

International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, or World Drug Day, is marked on 26 June every year, to strengthen action and cooperation in achieving the goal of a world free of drug abuse.
It is observed annually since 1989. The date June 26 is to commemorate Lin Zexu's dismantling of the opium trade in Humen, Guangdong, ending on June 25, 1839，just before the First Opium War in China. The observance was instituted by General Assembly Resolution 42/112 of 7 December 1987.
The theme for International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2022 was 'Addressing drug challenges in health and humanitarian crises'.

Former Haryana DGP Urges PM Modi to Declare July 22 as National Flag Day

Former Haryana Police chief Sheel Madhur took it upon himself to spread awareness on the importance of national flag, the 'Tiranga', with a missionary zeal. He appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to declare July 22 as National Flag Day.
Seeking to give it a canonical status, he said that it encapsulated the suffering and sacrifices of millions of Indians for Independence. Madhur emphasised that there is an urgent need to have the provision a National Flag Day as it will prove to be the greatest saviour of the unity, integrity and strength of the country.
On July 22, 1947, our national flag, popularly known as 'Tiranga', came into existence in its present format and specification as it was accepted and adopted as the national flag of independent India by the Constituent Assembly.
