World Migratory Bird Day

  • World Migratory Bird Day is a global event held twice a year on the second Saturday of May and October. It brings together bird enthusiasts to promote the conservation of migratory birds and raise awareness about their significance. In 2023, the focus is on water and its importance for these birds. May 13, marked the celebration of World Migratory Bird Day. World Migratory Bird Day 2023 was officially held on 13 May 13 and will again be held on October 14.
  • In 1993, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center and the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology began celebrations of the International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD). Thereafter, the first World Migratory Bird Day was launched by AEWA and CMS in April 2006, at the famous wildlife reserve called 'Ol Ari Nyiro, owned by Ms. Kuki Gallmann in Laikipia, Kenya.
  • According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) website, the World Migratory Bird Day 2023 focuses on 'Water and its importance for migratory birds'.

International Day of Plant Health

  • The United Nations designated May 12 as the International Day of Plant Health (IDPH) to raise global awareness on how protecting plant health can help end hunger, reduce poverty, protect biodiversity and the environment, and boost economic development.
  • International Day of Plant Health was established in 2022 by the United Nations. The idea was promoted by Zambia and then adopted unanimously by the UN General Assembly. Bolivia, Finland, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Tanzania were co-signatories to the resolution. The day is deemed a "key legacy of the International Year of Plant Health."
  • The theme of International Day of Plant Health 2023 was "Plant Health for Environmental Protection," as mentioned on the IPPC website. The IPPC is a 1951 multilateral treaty overseen by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) which formulates action plans to prevent and control the introduction and spread of pests of plants and plant products.

International Nurses Day

  • International Nurses Day is celebrated every year on May 12 in remembrance of Florence Nightingale. The founder of modern nursing was born on this day. It honours the hard work and dedication of nurses around the world who contribute to improving the health and well-being of their patients tirelessly.
  • The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has celebrated this day since 1965. In 1953 Dorothy Sutherland, an official with the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, proposed that President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaim a "Nurses' Day"; but he did not approve it.
  • In January 1974, 12 May was chosen to celebrate the day as it is the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.
  • The theme for 2023 International Nurses Day was 'Our Nurses, Our Future'.

  • National Technology Day, celebrated on May 11 in India, highlights the achievements of tech giants, researchers, and engineers in technology in our country.
  • National Technology Day is the perfect occasion to acknowledge the effort of scientists and engineers as growth drivers.
  • Atal Bihari Vajpayee, former Prime Minister of India, declared May 11 as National Technology Day in India. This was to commemorate the Pokhran nuclear tests conducted by the Indian Army in Pokhran, Rajasthan, in 1998. The Council for Technology announced that the country would celebrate National Technology Day annually to commemorate the dynamic achievement.
  • The theme for National Technology Day 2023 was 'School to Start-ups-Igniting Young Minds to Innovate.'

World Lupus Day

  • World Lupus Day is commemorated on May 10 worldwide every year to raise awareness among the populace about this serious life-threatening condition. This healthcare event calls for detailed understanding and support for the person who has been affected by this autoimmune disease. On this health day government, non-government organizations, international organizations, communities, and healthcare professionals gather together to work for action to promote understanding of the disease, so that people across the globe can learn more about this debilitating condition and take stringent action to fight it.
  • World Lupus Day was founded in 2004 by Lupus Canada to shed light on the disease, which may have devastating effects on both those who have it and their loved ones. The theme for World Lupus Day 2023 (purple day) was 'Make Lupus Visible'.

Russia Stages the 78th Victory Day Parade at Red Square

  • Russia held the 78th Victory Day parade anniversary on May 9, at Red Square in Moscow to celebrate the historic victory of the Soviet Union in 1945, when they defeated Nazi Germany in World War II, also known as the Great Patriotic War. This year's (2023) parade featured more than 10,000 individuals and 125 pieces of weaponry, which were all showcased by the Russian Defense Minister, Sergey Shoigu.
  • The anniversary was particularly poignant this year (2023) as the country mourns the thousands of soldiers who have lost their lives in the 15-month war in Ukraine, which shows no signs of ending anytime soon.
  • The Soviet Union, officially known as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), was a federal socialist state that existed from 1922 to 1991. The USSR was the largest country in the world by land area, spanning over 22 million square kilometers and comprising 15 republics. The Soviet Union was a global superpower and a rival to the United States during the Cold War, with both countries competing for global influence and dominance. However, the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, and its republics became independent states, including the Russian Federation.
