Computing Pioneer Clive Sinclair Dies

  • Clive Sinclair, the British inventor who pioneered the pocket calculator and affordable home computers died at the age of 81.
  • He passed away at his home in London after fighting cancer for more than a decade.
  • Clive Sinclair's groundbreaking products included the first portable electronic calculator in 1972.
  • The Sinclair ZX80, launched in 1980 and sold for less than £100 at the time, brought home computing to the masses in Britain and beyond.
  • Other early home computers such as the Apple II cost far more, and Sinclair's company was the first in the world to sell more than a million machines.

Time's 100 most Influential People of 2021

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Serum Institute of India Chief Executive Officer Adar Poonawalla have been named among the world's 100 most influential people of 2021 by Time magazine.
  • Time unveiled its annual list of 'The 100 Most Influential People of 2021', a global list that includes US President Joe Biden, Vice-President Kamala Harris, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Duke and Duchess of Sussex Prince Harry and Meghan, former US President Donald Trump and co-founder of the Taliban Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar.

Two Times Olympic Gold Medalist Yuriy Sedykh Passes Away

  • Double Olympic hammer throw gold medallist Yuriy Sedykh, a Ukrainian track and field athlete who represented the Soviet Union until 1991, has passed away. He set the world record for the hammer throw with a throw of 86.74 metres at the European Championships in Stuttgart in 1986 which is still not broken. He won his first gold medal at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal and his second gold at the 1980 Olympics in Moscow.

100th Death anniversary of Bharathiar observed

  • Rich tributes were paid to poet Subramania Bharati on his 100th death anniversary.
  • At the Mahakavi Bharathi Memorial Library at Karungalpalayam in the city, District Collector H. Krishnanunni garlanded the bust of the poet and paid floral tributes.
  • The library was started as a reading room in 1901 and Bharathiyar visited it on July 31, 1921 and delivered a speech on the topic "Man is Immortal", he last before his death.
  • The reading room was then renamed after him and the building was renovated by the district administration at Rs. 23 lakh and upgraded into a library on March 3, 1978.

Oscar Fernandes, Congress's Man of All Seasons, Passes Away

  • Congress veteran Oscar Fernandes passed away at the age of 80 in Karnataka.
  • Known as a man for all seasons, the veteran Congress leader had handled tricky negotiations with north-east rebels, government and party matters, and fluid movements of Kuchipudi dance form with equal ease.
  • Fernandes had served as the Union Minister for Transport, Road and Highways and Labour and Employment, in the first UPA government. He was also the Chairman of Central Election Authority of the All India Congress Committee. He was previously the AICC General Secretary.
  • Fernandes also served as Parliamentary Secretary to Rajiv Gandhi. He was elected to the 7th Lok Sabha in 1980 from Udupi constituency in Karnataka. A five-term Lok Sabha MP from Udupi in Karnatka, Fernandes was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the Congress after he lost the 1999 Lok Sabha elections.
