David Sassoli: European Parliament President Dies

  • European Parliament President David Sassoli died at the age of 65.
  • The Italian former journalist and centre-left politician was seriously ill for more than two weeks.
  • The former television newsreader became president of the 705-seat European Parliament in July 2019. He was the second Italian president since the assembly was elected by universal suffrage.
  • The role is considered one of the bloc's top jobs, and involves chairing sessions and overseeing the parliament's activities.
  • Sassoli left a three-decade career in journalism and became a member of the European Parliament (MEP) in 2009.
  • He was a member of the centre-left Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, the second-biggest grouping in the parliament.

Noted Kannada Literary Figure Chandrashekhar Patil Passes Away

  • Noted Kannada literary figure Chandrashekhar Patil popularly known as 'Champa' passed away at the age of 82.
  • A poet, playwright, Patil had also served as president of Kannada Sahitya Parishad.
  • An activist by nature, he was one of the foremost voices of 'Bandaya' genre of Kannada literature. He has participated in several literary and farmers' movements or agitations including Gokak agitation, Bandaya movement, anti-Emergency agitation among others, and was a strong proponent of Kannada language as a medium of instruction in schools.
  • Patil, who was a professor of English from Karnataka University, was the editor of the influential literary journal 'Sankramana', and had also served as chairman of Kannada Development Authority.
  • He is recipient of Karnataka Sahitya Akademi Award and Pampa Award among others.

Oscar Winner and Groundbreaking Star Sidney Poitier Dies

  • Sidney Poitier, the groundbreaking actor and enduring inspiration who transformed how Black people were portrayed on screen, became the first Black actor to win an Academy Award for best lead performance and the first to be a top box-office draw, died. He was 94.
  • Poitier, winner of the best actor Oscar in 1964 for "Lilies of the Field," died Thursday in the Bahamas, according to Eugene Torchon-Newry, acting director general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Bahamas.

Amitabh Bachchan and Jhulan Goswami to be Ambassadors of Legends League Cricket

  • Legends League Cricket roped in pacer Jhulan Goswami as an Ambassador to promote Women's Empowerment initiatives. She will be the face of the League and also launch a special initiative to further promote women's participation in cricket.
  • Legends League Cricket also announced an All Women Match Official Team for the League. This is for the first time in cricket that an all-women Match Officials team would be officiating an entire men's league. The League will have ICC empaneled female umpires and match referees from all across the world.
  • Legendary Amitabh Bachchan joined Legends League Cricket as its Ambassador and will be promoting the League. The League also has former India Head Coach, Ravi Shastri as its Commissioner looking after the Cricketing aspect.

Shafali Verma Appoint is Brand Endorser of Bank of Baroda

  • State-owned Bank of Baroda signed cricketer Shafali Verma as its brand endorser. The Bank continuously supports the youth of the country through its various banking and non-banking initiatives.
  • In 2019, at the age of 15, Shafali became the youngest cricketer to play in a Women's Twenty20 International match for India. In 2021, Shafali Verma became the 1st Women Cricketer to hit 3 sixes in Test Match.

Neil Nongkynrih, Pianist Who Led Shillong Chamber Choir to Glory, Dies

  • Neil Nongkynrih, the Shillong-based pianist, who turned a group of musicians from Shillong into a world-class, multi-genre choir, passed away at the age of 51. Nongkynrih, is the founder, conductor, and mentor of Shillong Chamber Orchestra.
  • The Choir came under the spotlight after winning India's Got Talent in 2010 post which they won the World Choir Games. The Choir was also chosen to perform at Rashtrapati Bhawan for former American President Barack Obama's visit.

Renowned Social Worker and Padma Shri Awardee Sindhutai Sapkal Dies

  • The renowned social worker and recipient of the Padma Shri Award, Sindhutai Sapkal passed away at the age of 74.
  • Sindhutai Sapkal, who was also referred to as 'Mai', ran an orphanage in Pune where she had adopted more than 1000 orphan children. In 2021, Sapkal was conferred with the Padma Shri award for her significant contribution to society.
  • Sapkal ran an orphanage called 'Sanmati Bal Niketan Sanstha' in Manjri near Hadapsar.
  • Besides the Padma Shri award, Sapkal had received more than 750 awards and honours. She used the award money to build shelters for orphans.
