Chumur Model Border Village chosen under Vibrant Villages Programme

Chumur village in eastern Ladakh has been selected as Ladakh’s first Model Border Village under the Vibrant Villages Programme. The foundation stone was laid by Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena. Chumur sits at about 16,700 feet along the India–China border. The project aims to improve housing, livelihood opportunities, tourism, renewable energy, and civic infrastructure in the remote border region. It will support local communities involved in Pashmina rearing and production. The initiative forms part of a broader plan to strengthen frontier villages and improve living conditions in border areas, with a central service core including a school, PHC, and more.

Mission Senehjori Aims to Transform Muga Silk

Mission Senehjori seeks to transform Assam's Muga silk sector into a globally competitive luxury ecosystem. The initiative, renowned for its natural golden colour and durability, is being implemented under the Atmanirbhar North East vision with support from the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, the Ministry of Textiles and the Government of Assam. The mission aims to increase the incomes of silk rearers and weavers, strengthen value chains, improve market access, and preserve Assam's textile heritage. It envisions Muga silk as a premium global product while blending traditional craft with modern economic strategies.

Bengaluru airport becomes India's second-busiest domestic airport in April 2026

Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru became India's second-busiest domestic airport in April 2026. Data released by the Airports Authority of India show Bengaluru handling about 3.28 million domestic passengers that month, while Mumbai recorded around 2.89 million. The gap of roughly 0.39 million travellers marks Bengaluru's rapid growth as a major business, technology and travel hub. The airport's expansion, improved connectivity and rising demand have driven its rise in the rankings, placing it behind only Delhi among India's domestic airports. Officials say the trend is set to continue.

South Coast Railway Zone Begins Operations

On 1 June 2026, the South Coast Railway Zone (SCoR), headquartered in Visakhapatnam, officially commenced operations as the 18th railway zone of Indian Railways. The new zone covers parts of the southern coastal states and was established under provisions linked to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014. Officials say the move will streamline administration, improve service delivery, and enhance connectivity for passengers and freight. The SCoR will coordinate with existing zones to integrate timetable planning and railway infrastructure development. Analysts expect faster project approvals and better local oversight of railway projects in its coverage area. State governments welcomed the change, hoping improved passenger connectivity and regional economic activity.

President Murmu awards President’s Police Colour to Sikkim Police

President Droupadi Murmu presented the President of India’s Police Colour to the Sikkim Police in Gangtok, recognizing its distinguished service in maintaining peace, security and justice. In her address, she lauded the force’s history since 1897 and noted that India’s policing should evolve from colonial-era control to citizen partnership. She urged transparency, accountability and a people-friendly approach, especially toward women, children and vulnerable groups, and called for stronger trust between police and citizens to uphold the rule of law. The award highlighted the police’s professional efficiency and its role in promoting harmony in Sikkim.
