FIDE Candidates Round 6: Praggnanandhaa Beats Nijat Abasov; Koenru Humpy, R. Vaishali Lose Out

It was a day of mixed fortunes for India as both Koenru Humpy and R. Vaishali lost to Lei Tingjie and Kateryna Lagno respectively in the Women's section in the 6th round of the FIDE Candidates Chess tournament.
it turned out to be a day of recovery for Vidit Gujrathi and R. Praggnanandhaa, with both Indians finishing with wins which formed the only decisive encounters in the Open section in Round 6.
After letting Ian Nepomniachtchi escape with a draw despite his stellar preparation in Round 5, Praggnanandhaa found a win against the lowest seed in the tournament, Nijat Abasov. The endgame turned out to be action-packed as Abasov tried to stave off a second successive loss.

Indian-American Akshay Bhatia Triumphs in Texas Open Playoff Drama

Indian American golfer Akshay Bhatia clinched the Valero Texas Open title, after a gripping playoff against Denny McCarthy. This victory not only marked his first major tournament qualification but also secured him a coveted spot in for the Augusta Masters in May 2024.
Akshay Bhatia's victory at the Texas Open earned him over $1.6 million in prize money and 500 FedEx points. Additionally, his second PGA Tour win ensured qualification for the US Open and propelled him to the 34^th position in the world rankings. Despite battling shoulder problems during the playoff, Bhatia displayed remarkable composure and skill to emerge victorious.

UEFA Champions League: Raphinha Scores Brace as Barcelona Beat PSG 3-2 in Quarter-final First Leg

Barcelona have taken a 3-2 lead against PSG heading into the quarter-final second leg of the UEFA Champions League.
Raphinha opened the scoring in the 37^th and Ousmane Dembélé equalized in the 48^th against his former club. Three minutes later, midfielder Vitinha put PSG ahead from Fabián Ruiz's pass in a pulsating match where Dembélé hit the left post moments before Christensen's goal.
Raphinha scored twice and substitute Andreas Christensen headed the winner as Barcelona won 3-2 at Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals. Raphinha was the pick of Barcelona's players on the night, and the Brazil forward had scored twice before Christensen's 77^th-minute goal.

Sarita to Lead India at Asian Championships

With India's star wrestlers not in contention, the country's up-and-coming grapplers will look to prove themselves on the big stage with Sarita Mor leading the Indian challenge at the Asian Championships.
It was decided during the March trials that winners in 17 Olympics weight categories will attempt to qualify for the Paris Games during the Asian qualifiers in Bishkek from April 19, while the runners-up in these categories will be given the opportunity to compete in the Asian Championships.
Since Olympics quota winner Anitm Panghal, who was given a direct entry, has pulled out of the event, Anju will represent India in the women's 53kg class.

Umesh Yadav Becomes Fifth Indian Pacer to Take 200 or more T20 Wickets

Gujarat Titans (GT) bowler Umesh Yadav entered the record books with the wicket of Yashasvi Jaiswal during the Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Rajasthan Royals (RR). Umesh is now the fifth Indian pacer to take 200 or more wickets in all T20s. He has played for multiple IPL franchises during his career apart from playing for India national team and Vidarbha in domestic circuit.
Yadav now has exact 200 wickets in 191 matches and ahead of him are Harshal Patel with 215 wickets, Jaydev Unadkat with 221 wickets, Jasprit Bumrah with 265 wickets, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar with 291 wickets in all T20s. Umesh has taken these wickets at a strike rate of 19.7 and an economy of 8.32. His best is 5/18 in all T20s and has taken five-wicket haul two times.

Sri Lankan Star Kamindu Mendis and England's Maia Bouchier Crowned ICC Players of the Month

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has named Sri Lankan cricketer Kamindu Mendis as the ICC Men's Player of the Month for March 2024. Mendis' historic batting performances in the first Test against Bangladesh in Sylhet were instrumental in Sri Lanka's comfortable victory.
Mendis, who had a quiet start to the tour in the T20I series, soon found his groove in the Test match. Facing a challenging situation with Sri Lanka at 57 for 5, Mendis rescued the innings with a brilliant century, scoring 102 runs. His heroics continued in the second innings, where he scored a remarkable 164 runs, becoming the first player batting at number seven or lower to hit two centuries in a single Test match.
On the women's side, England's Maia Bouchier has been awarded the ICC Women's Player of the Month for March 2024. Bouchier's exceptional performances in the T20I series against New Zealand were crucial in securing a 4-1 series victory for the visitors.
Bouchier's consistent batting displays were a highlight of the series, as she amassed 223 runs at an average of 55.75 across five matches. Her standout performance came in the decisive fourth match, where she blasted 91 runs off just 56 balls, including 12 fours and two sixes, to guide England to a 47-run victory and secure the series win.

Aishwarya Mishra's 400m Bronze at 2023 Asian Championships to be Upgraded to Silver

Top Indian athlete Aishwarya Mishra's 400m bronze medal at 2023 Asian Championships will be upgraded to silver as original second-place finisher Farida Soliyeva of Uzbekistan failed a dope test.
Soliyeva's urine sample collected on July 13, during the Asian Athletics Championships in Bangkok last year, contained prohibited substance Meldonium and the Athletics Integrity Unit, the international federation's body for combating doping, disqualified all her results from that date.
Soliyeva had finished second with a time of 52.95 seconds while Mishra was third in 53.07 seconds.
Nadeesha Ramanayake of Sri Lanka had won gold with a time of 52.61 seconds.

Delhi Capitals Announce Replacement for Harry Brook, Sign South African Pacer Lizaad Williams

South African fast bowler Lizaad Williams was roped in by Delhi Capitals as a replacement for batter Harry Brook in the ongoing Indian Premier League after the Englishman withdrew from the tournament.
Since making his international debut in 2021, Williams has represented South Africa in two Tests, four ODIs and 11 T20 Internationals. He has joined Delhi Capitals at his base price of Rs. 50 lakh.

Bilquis Mir: The First Indian Woman on the Paris Olympics Jury

Bilquis Mir, a canoeist from Jammu and Kashmir, made history as the first woman from India to represent the country as a jury member for the Summer Olympics in Paris in 2024. This prestigious appointment was officially conveyed through a letter from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to the J&K administration.
Bilquis Mir's journey to the Olympic jury is a testament to her determination and passion for the sport. She started her journey as a canoeist from the iconic Dal Lake in 1998 and went on to represent India. Despite the challenges faced by a Kashmiri girl in taking up sports, especially a relatively unknown sport like canoeing, Mir persevered and found her true calling.
In addition to her role as a jury member at the Paris Olympics, Bilquis Mir has also served as the coach of the women's canoeing team that will represent India at the upcoming Games. She also had the opportunity to be a jury member at the 2023 Asian Games held in Hangzhou, China.

Max Verstappen of Red Bull Dominated the Japanese Grand Prix

Triple world champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull dominated the Japanese Grand Prix in April 2024, leading a one-two finish for his team alongside teammate Sergio Perez. Verstappen was in control throughout the race after starting from pole position, claiming his third win from the first four races of the 2024 season.
Verstappen was back to his best after a brake issue in the previous race in Australia saw him retire. He stamped his authority on the race from the start, leading Perez to the first turn and maintaining his lead for the entire race.
Carlos Sainz of Ferrari took third place, ahead of his teammate Charles Leclerc, who started from eighth on the grid. McLaren's Lando Norris finished fifth, while Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso was sixth.

Harendra New Chief Coach of the Indian Women's Hockey Team

Harendra Singh was officially appointed as the new chief coach of the Indian women's hockey team.
Harendra, who was the favourite to take over from Janneke Schopman, will be overseeing the coaching duties and is presently in Bengaluru.
Harendra has been given a contract that will run till the Los Angeles Olympics 2028.

Mohammedan Sporting Win First top-tier I-League Title in 133 Years

Comebacks are tough when you're 133 years old but Mohammedan Sporting achieved theirs when they confirmed their first-ever promotion to the Indian Super League – becoming the second club to do so since promotion to the top division was opened last year.
Mohammedan achieved their promotion by winning the I-League title on the penultimate day of the second division championship, beating Shillong Lajong FC 2-1 on the road. Before the game, Mohammedan needed a solitary point to ensure that Sreenidhi Deccan couldn't catch up to them in the remaining games.

India in Doping Records for All Wrong Reasons

India registered the highest percentage of failed dope tests among countries which tested more than 2000 samples, with South Africa being second in the 2022 Testing Figures Report released by the World Anti-Doping Agency.
India tested 3865 samples (urine and blood combined) during the recorded period, of which 125 returned adverse analytical findings. This amounts to 3.2 per cent of the samples. In terms of number of samples tested, India was 11th on the list but the number of doping violations were higher than major sporting nations.

Bindyarani Devi Wins Bronze, at IWF World Cup

The IWF World Cup 2024 concluded in Phuket, Thailand in April 2024. The event was organised by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), the world governing body for men's and women's weightlifting.
Indian weightlifter Bindyarani Devi competed in the women's 55kg category and won a bronze medal. She lifted a total of 196kg, including 83kg in the snatch and 113kg in the clean and jerk. This was lower than her silver-medal-winning performance of 203kg at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
North Korea's Kang Hyon Gyong won the gold medal with a lift of 234kg, while Romania's Mihaela Cambei took the silver.

Rafael Nadal Withdraws from Monte Carlo Masters

Former world number one Rafael Nadal withdrew from the upcoming Monte Carlo Masters, commencing on April 7, citing that his body is not up to it at the moment. The ATP Masters 1000 event is the first one on clay this season, with the focus later firmly on the French Open 2024, i.e. the second Grand Slam event of the year. Nadal's participation at the Roland Garros is also under serious threat as the tournament is now less than two months away.

Tennis: WTA Finals to be Held in Saudi Arabia Starting 2024

Women's tennis saw a landmark decision made by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA). The WTA in a historic announcement said that it moved the year-end finals to Saudi Arabia. The Arab nation, emerging as a major sporting nation in recent years will host the WTA finals starting from 2024 until 2026. The move will see the top eight women tennis stars compete at the year-end event in both singles and doubles tournament.
Saudi Arabia, which for years was averse to women's sports and had a strict dress code in place will now host Women's Tennis Association (WTA) finals. The 2024 finals to be held from November 2-9 has moved to the Arab nation from last year's host Cancun in Mexico.
