India's First Private Mathematics Research Institute Comes in Mumbai
India's first privately funded mathematics research institute was launched in Mumbai. The Lodha Mathematical Sciences Institute (LMSI) was inaugurated in the presence of global dignitaries from the field of mathematics, including Dr. Manjul Bhargava, the first Indian-origin winner of the Fields Medal.
The Lodha Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Lodha Group, has backed the initiative with a major endowment. Last year (2024), the Lodha family donated about Rs. 20,000 crore to the foundation to support education and research initiatives. The LMSI is the first project to come from this donation.
The institute will be headed by Dr. V Kumar Murty, a mathematician with significant contributions to number theory and arithmetic geometry. He had earlier served as director of the Fields Institute and professor at the University of Toronto.

New Karnataka-Specific Education Policy to Include Two-language Formula & Mother Tongue-based Lea...
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that steps are being taken by the state government to frame a comprehensive "Karnataka-specific" education policy which will lead to holistic development of the youth.
A commission constituted for this purpose has recommended a two-language policy in school education and that Kannada or the mother tongue be the medium of instruction up to Class 5.
Bihar Fixes Rs. 100 Fee for all Recruitment Exam Prelims
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar declared that all state-level competitive examinations will now have a uniform preliminary test fee of Rs. 100. This applies to exams conducted by various recruitment bodies, including the Bihar Public Service Commission, Bihar Staff Selection Commission, Bihar Technical Service Commission, Bihar Police Subordinate Service Commission, and the Central Constable Selection Board.
Under the new arrangement, candidates who qualify for the mains stage of these examinations will not be required to pay any fee for appearing in the mains.
The move, according to the Chief Minister, is aimed at reducing the financial burden on aspirants and encouraging more participation in government job recruitment processes.

Maharashtra, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh Top in Education Loans
Maharashtra, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu emerged as the leading states in public sector bank (PSB) education loan disbursals over the last three financial years, according to Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data shared in the Rajya Sabha.
Between FY 2022-23 and 2024-25 (provisional), Maharashtra recorded Rs. 11,426.47 crore in sanctioned education loans, followed by Kerala with Rs. 8,937.78 crore, Andhra Pradesh at Rs. 8,101.06 crore, and Tamil Nadu at Rs. 7,198.63 crore.
At the other end, Lakshadweep, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland saw the lowest loan disbursals, with amounts ranging from Rs. 0.17 crore to Rs. 19,76 crore.
Among PSBs, the State Bank of India emerged as the largest lender, disbursing Rs. 32,311.02 crore in education loans during the same three-year period. Union Bank of India followed with Rs. 14,558.77 crore, and Bank of Baroda came third at Rs. 8,468.53 crore.
