University of Melbourne, 3 Indian Varsities Launches Joint BSc Dual Degree Course

The University of Melbourne will offer a new Bachelor of Science Dual Degree to Indian students. The dual degree will be offered in partnership with the University of Madras, Savitribai Phule Pune University, and Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management (Hyderabad).
Indian students who enrol in the new dual will complete their degree both in India and Australia. They will be spending the first two years of their course in India and the remaining two years at the campus in Melbourne.
After completing the degree, they will be awarded a Bachelor of Science from the University of Melbourne.

IIT Kanpur to Launch New eMasters Program on Sustainable Construction

The Department of Civil Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur will launch India's first-ever online post-graduate level programme on Construction Engineering.
The programme is a new addition to the unique eMasters degree programme being run by the institute and is focused on 'Sustainable Construction Practices and Project Management'.
The programme is designed to cater to the needs of the rapidly growing infrastructure and construction sectors in India.
This programme aims to equip practising civil engineers and architects with the knowledge and skills to manage projects effectively, using minimum resources and energy requirements, and with a minimum carbon footprint.

IGNOU Launches MA in Migration and Diaspora (11)

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) launched M.A. in Migration and Diaspora. As per the varsity, this is the first-of-its-kind to be introduced in India in the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode from January 2023 cycle.
The programme aims at developing knowledge and understanding for professionals who intend to work in the field of migration governance, diaspora engagement, human trafficking and labour flow.
The 80 credits, MA programme, is expected to open new avenues of employment to students in external and foreign affairs ministries, diplomatic missions, UN organisations, civil societies and non-government organisations.
The duration of the course is one year.

Kerala Govt. Announces Slew of Schemes and Initiatives to Support Women Entrepreneurs

The Kerala government launched significant initiatives to support female entrepreneurs in the state on International Women's Day, including a rise in the loan limit for women under the KSIDC's 'We-Mission Kerala' initiative from Rs. 25 lakh to Rs. 50 lakh at 5% interest.
Industries Minister P. Rajeeve made the announcement at the women entrepreneurs' meeting held by the Department of Industries and Commerce. He said that the decision would assist women entrepreneurs participating in the 'We-Mission Kerala' project of the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC) in scaling up their businesses.

NCTE Launches Four-year Integrated Teacher Education Programme

The National Council for Teacher Education launched the four-year Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP). The programme was launched in 57 Teacher Education Institutions from the academic session 2023-24 across the country. The ITEP, as notified in 2021, is a four-year dual-major holistic undergraduate degree offering BA-BEd, BSc-BEd and BCom-BEd.
This course will prepare teachers for the four stages of the new school structure – foundational, preparatory, middle and secondary (5+3+3+4).
The programme is being offered in pilot mode initially in reputed central/state government universities/institutions. ITEP will be available for all students who choose teaching as a profession after Secondary, by choice.
This integrated course will benefit students since they will save one year by finishing the course in four years rather than the customary five years required by the present BEd plan.

Women Lead 4 out of World's top 5 Universities for the First Time

Men typically hold positions of authority in academia. But the scene is changing quickly as more women take on leadership roles. For the first time ever, women are set to hold the top positions at four out of the top five universities.
As per QS World University Rankings 2023, the top five universities of the world are Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge University, Stanford University, Oxford University, and Harvard University respectively.
Claudine Gay is set to become the first black woman to lead Harvard University, while Deborah Prentice will the helm at Cambridge University from July 2023. They will join the ranks of Irene Tracey, President of Oxford University, and MIT President Sally Kornbluth.
As per data from Times Higher Education's (THE) Global University Rankings 2023, women now lead almost a quarter of the world's top 200 universities, a 41% jump in five years. It states that 48 out of 200 universities have female presidents or vice chancellors, up from 43 the year before. And of these, 10% are run by women of colour.

New Health Programme 'Arogya Mahila' for Women in Telangana

Telangana Health Minister T. Harish Rao launched a new health programme for women, named 'Arogya Mahila', on the occasion of International Women's Day.
Under the programme, tests would be conducted for women every Tuesday initially in 100 health centres and medicines provided to them free of cost.
The women, if necessary, would be sent to 'referral hospitals' for further medical care.

Dharmendra Pradhan Launches IIT Madras Four-year Bachelor of Science in Electronic Systems

Dharmendra Pradhan, Education Minister, Government of India, launched the Indian Institute of Technology Madras' (IIT Madras) four-year online Bachelor of Science (BS) in Electronic Systems.
The key objective of the programme is to meet the significant and growing demand for skilled graduates in the electronics and embedded manufacturing sector in India. The programme also features multiple exits and the students can get a Foundational Level Certificate, Diploma, or a BS degree.
The programme aligns with the India Semiconductor Mission to make India a global hub for electronics manufacturing and design. This is the second online BS programme from IIT Madras following BS Degree in Data Science and Applications.

IIT-Ropar to Host G20 Education Working Group Meet in Amritsar

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Ropar, will host the second G20 Education Working Group meeting in Amritsar from March 15 to 17 with a focus on the identification of relevant policies and best practices for research and innovations.
The theme of the meeting is "Strengthening Research and Innovation through collaboration".
According to IIT-Ropar Director Rajeev Ahuja, the event would help in ensuring a roadmap for multi-partner collaborations to facilitate accessibility and provision of research materials, reducing the gap between industry and academia and thereby discovering and identifying relevant policies and practises for research and innovations.
Through this event, the government intends to create closer ties with the G20 member nations and collectively respond to the issues each country has in reaching sustainable development goals.

NAAC Chairperson Resigns

National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) chairperson Bhushan Patwardhan resigned, days after he alleged that some higher education institutions were obtaining grades through "unfair means.
In his resignation letter to University Grants Commission (UGC), Patwardhan wrote that he had "nothing personal in this matter" and was aiming to "safeguard the sanctity" of the post of the head of NAAC.
NAAC is an autonomous body under the UGC that assesses and certifies higher educational institutions with grading as part of accreditation.
The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) is a government organisation in India that assesses and accredits Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). It is an autonomous body funded by the University Grants Commission and headquartered in Bangalore.
NAAC was established in 1994 in response to recommendations of National Policy in Education (1986).
