IIT Bombay Breaks into Top 150 in QS World Ranking

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Mumbai achieved its highest rank ever, breaking into the world's top 150 universities in the latest edition of the QS World University Ranking released in June 2023. This marked the first time in eight years that an Indian higher education institution made it to the top 150 list, with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore previously achieving this feat in 2016 with a ranking of 147.
IIT Bombay was ranked 1st in India and moved significantly up from 177th rank last year (2022) to 149th rank this year (2023) in the QS World University Rankings, with an overall score of 51.7 out of 100.

IIT Mandi Combines Academia, DRDOs, DPSUs, and Armed Forces to Foster Technology for Defence

On Day 4 of the Indian Institute of Technology Mandi's mega G20 – S20 Meet Academia, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), DPSUs, and Armed Forces came together to discuss and highlight the enhancement of technological development through collaborative approach. The theme of this event was 'Technology for Defence.'
Air Vice Marshal PKH Sinha (Retd), the Strategic Advisor of IIT Mandi coordinated the event along with Dr. Rajnish Sharma and emphasised creating an ecosystem that fosters innovation and encourages the development of technologies for defence usage.
In addition to this, the event included multiple guest talks from DRDO and the public sector unit on the importance of technology for defence.
IIT Mandi is working actively in the field of Defence research and innovation.

MCD School Principals to be Trained at IIM Ahmedabad, other IIMs

In a significant development aimed at enhancing the quality of education in MCD schools, principals from these schools will now receive school leadership and management training at prestigious institutions, including IIM Ahmedabad and other IIMs.
This move mirrors the successful teacher training initiatives implemented in Delhi government schools.
The objective of this training is to bring about a transformation in MCD schools by equipping principals with high-quality skills and knowledge.

Maharashtra Govt. Scraps No-detention Policy, Reintroduces Annual Exams for Classes 5 and 8

Mumbai, The Maharashtra government reintroduced annual examinations for Classes 5 and 8, which will allow schools to detain students if they fail to clear these exams in the second attempt.
The state School Education Department issued a notification to this effect, which came in the backdrop of the Centre amending the Right to Education (RTE) Act that had no failure detention till Class 8. Under the RTE 2009, schools could not detain any student until Class 8 as per the no detention policy.
The annual examination will be held at the end of the academic year of Classes 5 and 8. If the child fails to pass the examination, additional guidance will be provided and re-examination will be held in two months.
But if the child fails to clear the re-examination, then he or she will be held back in the same Class. However, no student will be expelled from the school till the completion of elementary education.

NITIE and NSE Sign MoU for Academic and Research Collaboration

The National Stock Exchange of India Limited (NSE), India's leading stock exchange, and the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) Mumbai, one of the leading business schools in the country offering education, training, and industrial consultancy in the field of Engineering Management, signed an MoU for academic and research collaboration in the field of Finance and Economics.
The MOU covers a wide range of activities including capacity building through the design and development of courses in Finance and Economics, undertaking research in cutting-edge areas including Fintech, and organising seminars, conferences, and symposia among others, with the underlying objective of creating an industry-ready talent pool by utilising mutual capabilities.
NSE and NITIE will also collectively work towards contributing to the literature on financial market research in the country and promoting general financial market awareness and policy advocacy. The MOU was signed by Professor Vivekanand Khanapuri, Dean (Sponsored Research & Industrial Consultancy), NITIE, and Dr Tirthankar Patnaik, Chief Economist, NSE.

AP Govt. Inks Deal with US-based Testing Service to Offer English Assessment for Govt. School Stu...

The Andhra Pradesh government and Princeton-based Educational Testing Service (ETS) have signed an agreement to offer customised English assessments for government school students. This collaboration is aimed at fortifying the English language skills of lakhs of students which could aid in promoting academic excellence.
This noble initiative is aimed at making a profound societal impact and aimed at revolutionising education in the state to pave the way for a brighter future.
Under the five-year deal, ETS will evaluate and certify English language proficiency in students from classes 3 to 10 across all government schools through the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Young Students Series assessments.
TOEFL Primary and TOEFL Junior standard tests will be deployed to assess English reading and listening skills in classes 3 to 5 and 6 to 9 respectively, while TOEFL Junior Speaking Test will assess the English speaking skills of 10th standard students.

SASTRA University Signs MoU with State University of New York for UG, PG, PhD Courses

The Thanjavur-based SASTRA University signed an MoU with New York state based State University of New York, Binghamton facilitating the mobility of students and faculty besides collaborative degree programmes leading to under-graduate, post-graduate and PhD degrees.
The VC of SASTRA outlined that Electronics Manufacturing, Biomedical Devices & Digital Technologies shall be the key focus areas and aligned with India's semiconductor and other mission mode projects. The MoU was signed will be functional from academic year 2023-24.
SASTRA University offers various undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes across different streams such as Science, Engineering, Medicine, Education, Arts, Law and Management. Also, SASTRA University offers scholarships to meritorious students.

UP Board Adds Biographies of 11 Leaders to Classes 9 to 12 Curriculum

The Uttar Pradesh board of secondary education included biographies of Hindutva ideologue V. D. Savarkar, Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji and tribal leader Birsa Munda in the curriculum for classes 9 to 12.
Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad (UPMSP) Secretary Dibyakant Shukla said that biographies of 11 leaders were included in the moral education syllabus for classes 9 to 12.
Students will read about these leaders from academic session 2023-24.
Apart from this, many things from the field of science and technology were also included in the computer syllabus.
The objective behind including new things in the curriculum is to ensure the all-round development of children.

Rolls-Royce Announces Launch of 4th Edition of Unnati Scholarship Programme for Women Students

On the occasion of International Women in Engineering Day, Rolls-Royce announced the launch of the fourth edition of its Unnati Scholarship programme for women engineering students, in association with Buddy4Study and Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) India.
The programme is focused on bridging the gender gap and raising female representation in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and aims to provide financial support to meritorious students from economically underprivileged backgrounds.
The scholarship is open to all women students enrolled in undergraduate engineering degree programmes at any AICTE-recognised institution in India and fulfilling the criteria of the scholarship.

IISc Bangalore Top Indian Institute in THE's Asia University Rankings 2023

The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, emerged as India's highest-ranked university in the Times Higher Education's (THE) Asia University Rankings 2023. In the full rankings, which were released for Asian universities, it stood at 48th place.
It was the only Indian university in the top 50.
In India, IISc was followed by JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research, Bengaluru, which ranked 68th in Asia. Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences, Solan, ranked 77th in Asia and third in the country.
India had four universities in the top 100 and 18 universities in the top 200. Kottayam's Mahatma Gandhi University was the only other Indian university in the top 100. It stood at the 95th spot.
In the full list, China's Tsinghua University retained the top spot for the fourth year in a row. In second place was another Chinese university, Peking University, which also retained the spot for the fourth year in a row.
The third place went to the National University of Singapore, which also maintained its position for the fourth consecutive year.
The other two universities in the top five rankings were the University of Hong Kong and Singapore's Nanyang Technological University.

Jamia Millia Islamia Announces Short-term Skill Courses

The Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) announced the commencement of various short-term, skill-based courses. These courses are available in both online and offline modes and also provide placement assistance.
The courses are open to a wide range of individuals, including working professionals, entrepreneurs, university students, job seekers, and even school dropouts.

IIT Roorkee Develops Water-soluble Coating to Replace Plastic in Disposable Paper

A team of researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, IIT Roorkee, developed a coating for disposable paper that is water soluble and will be used in various applications with requirements of food freshness retention and replaces plastic coatings commonly used in food-grade packaging papers and paperboards.
The innovative coating formulation aims to eliminate the use of plastic in disposable paper and paperboard products, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable society. By enabling the recycling of disposable products, this technology has a significant positive impact on the environment, improving waste material collection and reducing the burden on landfill sites.

North India's First Skin Bank Inaugurated at New Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital

North India's first Skin Bank was inaugurated at New Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital. It is a bank where deceased donors can donate their skin which will be helpful in treating burns. The skin can be donated within six hours of death and utilised for burns and trauma patients after processing.
As per Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, the facility will be a boon for patients and help in providing a better quality of life for people suffering from severe burns and injuries. The Medical Superintendent of the Safdarjung Hospital, Dr. B. L. Sherwal described it as a significant achievement adding that the hospital is also planning to open a separate website for the skin bank so that people can avail of this facility easily.
