Yana Mir, Honoured In UK Parliament

  • Yana Mir, a social activist and journalist from Jammu and Kashmir, speaking at an event hosted by the Jammu and Kashmir Study Centre in the UK, she asserted that she was not Malala Yusufzai and was safe in India.
  • At the event in the UK Parliament, Mir received the Diversity Ambassador Award from UK MP Theresa Villiers in the presence of MPs Bob Blackman and Virendra Sharma. Yana Mir is an activist, journalist, and TedX speaker from Srinagar. 
  • She holds a Bachelor's degree in Journalism and Mass Communication from IEC University and an MBA from the University of Mumbai.
  • She is also the Vice President of All JK Youth Society (AJKYS), a social welfare wing of the Zaberwan Group, which is committed to working for the welfare, safety, and empowerment of the youth across the Kashmir Valley.

Dadasaheb Phalke IFF Awards 2024

  • The Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival Awards 2024 was held in Mumbai. Several notable celebrities, including Shah Rukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Aditya Roy Kapur, Rani Mukerji, Atlee and Nayanthara, among others were in attendance at the star-studded event. Shah Rukh bagged the Best Actor Award while Nayanthara was awarded the Best Actress.

Alex Dawson Captures the Underwater Photographer of the Year 2024 Award

  • Swedish photographer Alex Dawson clinched the prestigious title of Underwater Photographer of the Year 2024. His winning entry, 'Whale Bones', is a mesmerising image that transports viewers beneath the icy expanse of the Greenland ice sheet, where a diver is seen exploring the skeletal remains of a minke whale. This striking composition not only showcases Dawson's exceptional photographic skills but also highlights the haunting beauty of the underwater world.

Shashi Tharoor Conferred France's Highest Civilian Honour

  • Shashi Tharoor, a prolific author and a diplomat-turned-politician, was conferred France's highest civilian honour 'Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur'.
  • Author of several books and a Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram, Tharoor was conferred the prestigious award at the French Embassy by French Senate President Gerard Larcher.
  • The French government had announced the award for Tharoor, a former Union Minister, in August 2022.
  • The highest French civilian award came in recognition of Tharoor's tireless efforts to deepen Indo-French ties, commitment to international peace and cooperation, and as a long-standing friend of France.

Gulzar and Jagadguru Rambhadracharya Named for Prestigious Jnanpith Award 2023

  • Renowned Urdu poet Gulzar and Sanskrit scholar Jagadguru Rambhadracharya were named the recipients of the 58th Jnanpith Award, the Jnanpith selection committee announced.
  • Sampooran Singh Kalra, popularly known as Gulzar, is celebrated for his works in Hindi cinema and is considered one of the finest Urdu poets of this era.
  • Rambhadracharya, the founder and head of Tulsi Peeth in Chitrakoot, is a renowned Hindu spiritual leader, educator and writer of more than 240 books and texts, including four epics.
  • Gulzar received the Sahitya Akademi Award for Urdu in 2002, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2013, Padma Bhushan in 2004, and at least five National Film awards for his works.
  • Rambhadracharya is one of the present four Jagadguru Ramanandacharyas of the Ramananda sect and has been holding this position since 1982.
  • Established in 1944, the Jnanpith Award is given annually for outstanding contributions to Indian literature. This is the second time the award is being given for Sanskrit language and the fifth time for Urdu language.
  • The award carries a prize money of Rs 21 lakh, a statue of Vagdevi and a citation.
  • The recipients for the award were decided by a selection committee chaired by Jnanpith awardee Pratibha Rai.

BAFTA Awards 2024

  • The BAFTA Film Awards, the most coveted honours in the British movie industry, were handed out in London.
  • The 77th BAFTA Film Awards 2024 took place at the Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre in London, Britain. The ceremony was hosted by David Tennant for the first time. Many big names descended on the red carpet to attend the awards ceremony, including Indian actress Deepika Padukone, who was also a presenter. It was the actress' first time attending the BAFTAs and she embraced her Indian roots for the occasion.

South Indian Bank Gets Best Technology Bank of the Year Award

  • South Indian Bank was honoured with the title of Best Technology Bank of the Year Award at the 19th IBA Annual Banking Technology Conference, Expo, & Citations.
  • The bank's outstanding performance was recognised with a total of six prestigious awards. In three categories, the bank emerged as the winner, secured the runner-up position in one, and received special mentions in two others.
  • The awards were presented to P. R. Seshadri, MD & CEO of South Indian Bank, by T. Rabi Sankar, Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, in Mumbai.
  • The IBA Annual Banking Technology Conference, Expo & Citations has been an annual event since its inception in 2005. Instituted by the Indian Banks' Association (IBA), it recognises organisations that have brought in transformational changes in their businesses by adopting modern digital solutions.
