2021 Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Winners Announced

  • Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for science and technology 2021, were announced during the 80th foundation day of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). Every year, CSIR presents this award to scientists below 45 years of age for their contributions in biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, medicine, engineering and earth, atmosphere, ocean and planetary sciences. The award comprises a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh.
  • Biological Sciences category:
  • Dr. Amit Singh, department of microbiology and cell biology, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru.
  • Dr. Arun Kumar Shukla, department of biological sciences and bioengineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur.
  • Chemical sciences category:
  • Two researchers from the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bengaluru, Dr. Kanishka Biswas from the International Centre of Materials Science and Dr. T Govindaraju, from the Bio-organic Chemistry Laboratory, announced as recipients.
  • Earth, Atmosphere, Ocean and Planetary Sciences category:
  • Dr. Binoy Kumar Saikia from Coal and Energy Research Group, CSIR North East Institute of Science and Technology, Jorhat, was named recipient.
  • Dr. Debdeep Mukhopadhyay, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, received the award under the engineering sciences category.
  • Mathematical sciences category:
  • Dr. Anish Ghosh, school of mathematics, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai.
  • Dr. Saket Saurabh, the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai, were announced winners.
  • Medical sciences:
  • Dr. Jeemon Panniyammakal, Achutha Menon Centre for Health Science Studies, Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram.
  • Dr. Rohit Srivastava, department of biosciences and bioengineering, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.
  • Dr. Kanak Saha, from Pune's Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, received the award for physical sciences.
  • The Prize is bestowed on a person who, in the opinion of CSIR, has made conspicuously important and outstanding contributions to human knowledge and progress fundamental and applied, in the particular field of endeavour, which is his/her specialisation.

Bangladeshi Fairooz Faizah Beether Gets 2021 Changemaker Award

  • Fairooz Faizah Beether of Bangladesh has been chosen for the 2021 Changemaker Award for her work promoting good health and well-being by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The award celebrates an individual who has inspired change using personal experience or from a position of leadership.
  • Fairooz Faizah is co-founder of Moner School which is an anonymous online platform active in the field of mental health. It works with youth to educate them about the importance of mental health care through training, workshops, and a 24/7 online mental health first aid service in Bangladesh.
  • The Changemaker Award is part of the Goalkeepers Global Goals award instituted by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to accelerate progress towards attaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN.

President Ram Nath Kovind Confers National Service Scheme Awards

  • President Ram Nath Kovind virtually confered National Service Scheme (NSS) Awards for the year 2019-20.
  • Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Thakur, Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Nisith Pramanik also attended the event.
  • Every year the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Department of Youth Affairs confers the National Service Scheme Award to recognise and reward outstanding contributions towards voluntary community service made by the Universities/Colleges, (+2) Councils, Senior Secondary, NSS Units/ Programme Officers and NSS volunteers, with a view to further promote NSS in the country.

Government e Marketplace (GeM) Bags Prestigious CIPS Award

  • London-based Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply (CIPS) has adjudged India's state-run e-commerce portal, Government e Marketplace (GeM), as the winner of the CIPS Excellence in Procurement Awards 2021 in the 'Best Use of Digital Technology' outshining contenders like Jaguar Land Rover, Royal Dutch Shell and Vendigital.
  • GeM was also shortlisted as a finalist in two additional categories—Public Procurement Project of the Year' and 'Best Initiative to Build a Diverse Supply Base'. The award was received on behalf of GeM by Rohit Vadhwana, first secretary, High Commission of India, in the UK.
  • The CIPS Awards are one of the leading recognitions around procurement globally. CIPS is a global not-for-profit organisation and professional body dedicated to promoting good practices in procurement and supply management, with a community across 150 countries.

S. V. Saraswati Wins National Florence Nightingale Award for 2020

  • The National Florence Nightingale Award, the highest national distinction a nurse can achieve, was conferred upon Brig SV Saraswati, deputy director-General of Military Nursing Service (MNS) for 2020.
  • President Ram Nath Kovind conferred the award in a virtual ceremony on Saraswati for her contribution as a nurse administrator.
  • Brig Saraswati is from the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh and was commissioned into the MNS in December 1983. She has served in the MNS for more than three and half decades, especially in perioperative nursing.
