India Wins UN Award for Hypertension Control Initiative

  • India won a United Nations (UN) award for its 'India Hypertension Control Initiative (IHCI)', a large-scale hypertension intervention under the National Health Mission that saw 3.4 million hypertensive people identified and put on treatment at various government health facilities.
  • The '2022 UN Interagency Task Force, and WHO Special Programme on Primary Health Care Award' was announced at the UN General Assembly side event at New York, USA.
  • IHCI is a collaborative initiative of the health ministry, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), state governments and World Health Organization-India.
  • "IHCI has been able to leverage and strengthen the existing health care delivery system, hypertension control interventions under National Health Mission and improve the linkages between populations-based screening initiative with health care.

IISc Physicist Bags S. Chandrashekhar Prize

  • Physicist Arnab Rai Choudhuri from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) was awarded the Subrahmanyan Chandrashekhar Prize of the Division of Plasma Physics of the Asia-Pacific Physical Societies for 2022.
  • Choudhuri was awarded for his contribution in developing flux transport solar dynamo models of the 11-year sunspot cyclone. Using this model, he provided theoretical explanations for several phenomena happening on the sun.
  • The award comprises a medal, a certificate and a cash prize.

BHU Scientist Named for Prestigious Decennial Award by Indian Geophysical Union

  • Professor N.V. Chalapathi Rao, Department of Geology, Institute of Science, Banaras Hindu University, was selected for the prestigious Decennial Award for the year 2022 by the Indian Geophysical Union.
  • He was chosen for the honour on account of his significant contributions to establishing a school of deep mantle petrology and outstanding contributions to understanding the evolution of Indian sub-continental lithospheric mantle vis-à-vis studies on the kimberlites, lamproites, lamprophyres, pyroxenites, related rocks and their entrained xenoliths and on Deccan Traps.
  • This award is given annually to a meritorious scientist (below 60 years of age) for outstanding contribution to earth sciences covering land and/or offshore of India using indigenous resources.

Aniket Doegar Gets Social Entrepreneur of Year Award

  • Aniket Doegar of Haqdarshak, a tech platform that connects citizens with their eligible government welfare schemes, was awarded the 13th Social Entrepreneur of the Year (SEOY) Award-India, established by Jubilant Bhartia Foundation and Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship.
  • Haqdarshak trained over 22,800 agents across 24 states, providing benefits worth Rs. 4,000 crore to over 2 million families and 35,000 micro businesses.
  • The Jubilant Bhartia Foundation is a not-for-profit established in 2007 to bring social change through a strategic multi-stakeholder partnership in four key areas — universalising elementary education; improving health indices; escalating employability; and enabling conducive environment for social entrepreneurship.

Industrialist Swati Piramal Conferred France's Top Civilian Honour

  • Prominent Indian scientist and industrialist Swati Piramal was conferred France's top civilian honour for her contributions in the fields of business and industry, science, medicine, and towards strengthening Indo-French ties.
  • Swati Piramal is the vice-chairperson of the Mumbai-headquartered Piramal Group, a business conglomerate with interests in pharmaceuticals, financial services, real estate and glass packaging.
  • The Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur or Knight of the Legion of Honour was conferred on her in an investiture ceremony by Catherine Colonna, France's Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, during a visit to India. The award was conferred on behalf of French President Emmanuel Macron.

SIIMA Awards 2022

  • The biggest award, South Indian International Movie Awards 2022 (SIIMA) was held in Bengaluru, Karnataka. Several biggies from the South including Allu Arjun, Silambarasan T.R., Pooja Hegde, Vijay Deverakonda, Kamal Haasan, and many others graced their presence at the award night. The awardees of Telugu and Kannada films were announced. From Allu Arjun, Ranveer Singh to Yash, many won big at SIIMA.
  • Some of the winners are: Best Film: Pushpa: The Rise (Mythri Movie Makers), Best Director: Sukumar (Pushpa: The Rise), Best Actor: Allu Arjun (Pushpa: The Rise), Best Actress: Pooja Hedge (Most Eligible Bachelor), Best Actor in a Supporting Role: Jagadeesh Prathap Bandari (Pushpa: The Rise) and Best Actress in a Supporting Role: Varalakshmi Sarathkumar (Krack).

Lee Jung-jae Wins the 74th Emmy Award for Best Male Actor in Drama Series

  • Actor Lee Jung-jae won an Emmy for the Best Actor in a Drama for his performance in Netflix's hit series Squid Game. The win also makes him only the fourth Asian actor ever to win an Emmy for acting and the first ever to win the award for a non-English speaking role.
  • Held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, Jung-Jae was up against names such as Jason Bateman ('Ozark'), Brian Cox ('Succession'), Bob Odenkirk ('Better Call Saul'), Adam Scott ('Severance') and Jeremy Strong ('Succession').

Businessline Changemaker Awards

  • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented BusinessLine's Changemaker of the Year award to Bharat Biotech for its stirring work during the pandemic in producing a home-grown vaccine in super quick time. The prodigiously talented Mithali Raj, who single-handedly put women's cricket centre stage, was crowned the iconic changemaker of the year. Receiving the award, the cricketer said, "My lesson to young girls would be not to dream to be like Mithali Raj but be bigger than Mithali Raj."
  • The fourth edition of the event saw awards being given in six categories – digital transformation, social transformation, financial transformation, young changemaker, iconic changemaker, and changemaker of the year. DeHaat (a one-stop shop for agricultural services), Ramesh Raliya (the inventor of nano urea), Zerodha (a pioneer in discount brokerage), Prachi Shevagaonkar (a climate action warrior) and Akash Singh (who upskills prisoners and also addresses river pollution) were among the winners.
