Former VP Venkaiah Naidu Confered with SIES Award for Public Leadership

  • Former vice president Venkaiah Naidu was conferred with the 25th Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi National Eminence Award (SIES) for public leadership. Other awardees in various categories included the Governor of Kerala Arif Mohammed Khan, eminent industrialist Ratan Tata, renowned cardiologist and Padma Vibhushan awardee Dr. Marthanda Varma Sankaran Valianathan, Scientific Advisor to the Government of India Ajay Sood and famous Harikatha artiste Vishakha Hari. The awards are given in the fields of public leadership, community leadership, science and technology, and social thinkers who have made outstanding contributions in their respective fields.

J&K Awarded 1st Prize in Ayushman Bharat Health Account ID Generation

  • Jammu and Kashmir was awarded 1st prize in the category for Ayushman Bharat health account ID generation and 2nd prize in the category for Teleconsultation conducted during the celebration of Universal Health Coverage Day 2022 celebrated at International Cooperation and Convention Centre, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.
  • The event was graced by the Governor of UP, Anandiben Patel virtually, Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare; Health Ministers of various states and UTs, senior officials from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, States, UTs and development partners.
  • Dr. Mohammad Shafi Koka, State nodal officer NHM attended the function and received the awards from the Union Health Minister who personally congratulated the UT of J&K for achieving the milestones in the healthcare delivery system.

Indian-American Krishna Vavilala Receives US Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award

  • US President Joe Biden recognised Indian-American and a long-time Houstonian, Krishna Vavilala, with the Presidential Lifetime Achievement (PLA) Award, the nation's highest honour for his contributions to his community and the country at large. The Presidential Lifetime Achievement (PLA) Awards, led by AmeriCorps, is an annual event held to honour citizens, who exhibit outstanding character, worth ethic, and dedication to their communities.
  • Krishna Vavilala is Originally from Andhra Pradesh. Vavilala is a retired Electrical Engineer, and currently, the founder and Chairman of the Foundation for India Studies (FIS), a 16-year-old non-profit organisation, whose signature project "the Indo-American Oral History Project" won the 2019 Mary Fay Barnes Award for Excellence.
  • Vavilala has also served as a President of the American Society of Indian Engineers, Telugu Cultural Association, Houston and Telugu Literary and Cultural Association.
  • He has received several awards and accolades from various organisations including the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Houston, the Indo-American Press Club and the Lifetime Achievement Award, from the India Culture Centre.

Four Diplomats, US Lawmaker Honoured with 2022 'Diwali- Power of One' Award at UN

  • Four veteran diplomats and a US lawmaker were honoured with this year's (2022) annual 'Diwali- Power of One' Award for their efforts in working towards a peaceful and secure world. The award, which is also known as the 'Oscars of Diplomacy', is presented to former top diplomats of the United Nations or a member state for their effort to help form a more perfect, peaceful and secure world for all."
  • Former Permanent Representative of Georgia to the UN and current Ambassador to Canada Kaha Imnadze, and former Permanent Representative of Grenada to the United Nations Keisha McGuire were among those who were honoured.
  • The other three who were awarded were former Interim Defence Minister and Permanent Representative of Bulgaria to the UN and current Ambassador to the US Georgi Velikov Panayotov, former Permanent Representative of Benin to the UN and now Ambassador to the US Jean-Claude do Rego and former Chairman, Foreign Affairs Committee of the US House of Representatives Eliot Lance Engel.

Indian-origin Science Teacher Wins Prime Minister's Prize in Australia

  • An Indian-origin teacher in Australia received the 2022 Prime Minister's Prize for Excellence in Science Teaching in secondary schools.
  • Melbourne-based Veena Nair, who is ViewBank College's Head of Technology and STEAM project leader, was awarded for demonstrating practical application of STEAM to students, and how they can use their skills to make a real impact in the world.
  • As a leading educator in STEAM, Nair has more than 20 years of experience in teaching science-based subjects across India, the United Arab Emirates, and now Australia.
  • Nair began her teaching career in Mumbai, where she provided computers to low socio-economic schools and taught students how to code.
  • Nair is a BSc in Physics and a BEd in Science and Mathematics from the University of Mumbai and an MEd (maths education) from Deakin University.
  • She won the Educator of the Year Award by the Design and Technology Teachers' Association of Australia in 2018.

S.S. Rajamouli Wins Best Director at New York Film Critics Circle

  • Filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli won the Best Director Award for RRR at the New York Film Critics Circle. The group is one of the first critics' groups to weigh in on the awards season. Rajamouli's win surprised many as his competitors included Steven Spielberg, Darron Aronofsky, Sarah Polley, and Gina Prince-Blythewood.
  • At the New York Film Critics Circle, Todd Field's Tar has won the Best Picture of the year, also nabbing Best Actress for Cate Blanchett's leading performance. Colin Farrell won Best Actor for two of his performances this year — Kogonada's future-set sci-fi drama After Yang and Martin McDonagh's The Banshees of Inisherin. Ke Huy Quan has won the Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Everything Everywhere All At Once, Keke Palmer won the Best Supporting Actress for Nope.

Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai Awarded Padma Bhushan

  • Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai was awarded the Padma Bhushan - India's third-highest civilian award - for 2022 in the Trade and Industry category in the presence of his close family members in San Francisco. India's Ambassador to the US Taranjit Singh Sandhu handed over the award to Pichai and said that his inspirational journey reaffirms Indian talent's contribution to global innovation.

President of India Presents National Awards for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities

  • President Droupadi Murmu conferred the National Awards for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities for the year 2021 and 2022 at a function in New Delhi. National Awards for 2021 were given to 25 Individuals, institutions and organizations while for 2022, the Awards were presented to 29 individuals, institutions and organisations for their outstanding achievements and work done towards empowerment of Persons with Disabilities. These awards were given in various categories including Sarvshresth Divyangjan, Shresth Divyangjan, Shresth Divyang Bal and Balika, Sarvshrestha Vyakti working towards the empowerment of Divyangjan and Sarvshrestha Rehabilitation Professional worker. Speaking on the occasion, President Droupadi Murmu said, the objective of International Day of Persons with Disabilities is to promote awareness about the issues concerning disabilities. She stressed on the need to create a healthy atmosphere for Divyangjans so that they can live a dignified life and also participate in political, social, economic, cultural and sports activities without any discrimination.
