Freedom Fighter and Communist Leader N. Sankaraiah Passed Away

  • N. Sankaraiah, a freedom fighter, founding member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and one of the tallest leaders of the Left movement in the country, died at the age of 102.
  • Sankaraiah's journey as a revolutionary began at the American College in Madurai. His father wanted him to become a lawyer but his participation in the freedom struggle led to his arrest, days before his final examinations. He spent a total of eight years in prison, both before and after Independence, a time that shaped his belief in communism and social justice.
  • Sankaraiah was honoured with the prestigious 'Thagaisal Thamizhar' Award by the DMK government in 2021. He donated the prize money from the award for Covid-19 relief.

Shital Mahajan Becomes First Woman to Skydive from Mt Everest

  • Shital Mahajan, a well-known Indian skydiver, achieved a new feat by becoming the first woman in the world to jump off a helicopter from the height of 21,500 ft in front of Mt Everest. Mahajan a recipient of the fourth highest Indian civilian award Padma Shri and a holder of several skydiving records, completed skydiving in the front side of Mt. Everest, the highest peak in the world.

Kedarnath Aggarwal, Chairman of Bikanervala, Passes Away

  • Lala Kedarnath Aggarwal, who once sold bhujia and rasgullas in buckets on the streets of old Delhi before establishing sweets and snacks brand Bikanervala, passed away. He was 86.
  • Kedarnath Aggarwal started his entrepreneurial journey in Delhi.
  • Hailing from Bikaner, his family owned a sweet shop in the bylanes of the city since 1905. The shop was named as Bikaner Namkeen Bhandar and used to sell a few varieties of sweets and snacks.

  • Oberoi received numerous awards and accolades, including the Padma Vibhushan, in recognition of his exceptional contribution to the country in tourism and hospitality.
  • P.R.S. Oberoi, popularly known as Biki, was born in New Delhi in 1929.
  • The son of late Rai Bahadur MS Oberoi, the founder of The Oberoi Group, was the executive chairman of EIH Ltd for a long time when the group flourished.

Former US Astronaut Frank Borman, Who Led First Lunar Mission, Passes Away

  • Astronaut Frank Borman, who commanded Apollo 8's historic Christmas 1968 flight that circled the moon 10 times and paved the way for the lunar landing the next year, died at the age of 95.
  • Borman spent a total of almost 20 days in space on two trips in the 1960s.
  • Borman also led troubled Eastern Airlines in the 1970s and early '80s after leaving the astronaut corps.
  • But he is best known for his NASA duties. He and his crew, James Lovell and William Anders, were the first Apollo mission to fly to the moon, and to see Earth as a distant sphere in space.
  • Launched from Florida's Cape Canaveral on Dec. 21, 1968, the Apollo 8 trio spent three days travelling to the moon, and slipped into lunar orbit on Christmas Eve. After they circled 10 times on Dec. 24-25, they headed home on Dec. 27.

At 97, Kerala Man Sets World Record as Longest Serving Lawyer

  • P. Balasubramanian Menon, a distinguished lawyer in northern Palakkad district of Kerala, achieved a significant milestone in the legal field.
  • At the age of 97, Menon secured a place in the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest serving advocate with an impressive career spanning 73 years and 60 days.
  • After pursuing legal studies from the Madras Law College, Menon began his career in the early 1950s.
