Olympian Footballer S.S. 'Babu' Nayaran Passes Away

  • Two-times Olympian Shankar Subramaniam, alias "Babu" Nayaran passed away. He was India's goalkeeper during the 1956 and 1960 Olympics. Besides representing Maharashtra in football and basketball, Narayan emerged as one of the most reliable goalkeepers in India. His decade-long career for the national team also included the stellar effort of India finishing fourth in the 1956 Olympics and representing India in the 1964 Asian Games.
  • Subramaniam was born in Palakkad district in Kerala, Narayan was a star in Mumbai's local circuit during his appearances for Matunga Students, Matunga Gymkhana, Caltex and Tata Sports Club. He was part of Maharashtra's Santosh Trophy-winning campaign in 1964.

Noted Kerala Sculptor, Cartoonist P.S. Banarji Passes Away

  • Cartoonist, sculptor and folk singer P.S. Banarji passed away at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital on Friday. He was 41.
  • A recipient of the Lalithakala Akademi Fellowship, Banarji was noted for his Ayyankali and Buddha sculptures at Venganur and Koduman. Known for his rendition of a string of folk songs, including the popular 'Tharaka Pennale', he was working as a graphic designer in an IT firm in the capital.

R. Aravamudan, One of ISRO's Early Pioneers Passes Away

  • Ramabhadran Aravamudan, a veteran of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and the country's science and technology fraternity passed away.
  • Among the first to join ISRO (then INCOSPAR), Aravamudan rose to serve the organization as Director Satish Dhawan Space Centre (spaceport), Sriharikota and the ISRO Satellite Centre, Bengaluru.

Dogri Writer Padma Sachdev Passes Away

  • Padma Shri awardee Padma Sachdev, who is the first modern woman poet of Dogri language, passed away.
  • Padma Sachdev authored many books in Dogri and Hindi, and her poetry collections, including Meri Kavita Mere Geet, won her the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1971.
  • She received the Padma Shri, the country's fourth-highest civilian award, in 2001 and was awarded the Kabir Samman for poetry for 2007-08 by the Madhya Pradesh government.

Eurosport India Appoints John Abraham as MotoGP Brand Ambassador

  • Eurosport India, the sports activities channel from broadcast community Discovery, appointed Bollywood actor John Abraham as the brand ambassador for flagship motorsport property – MotoGP.
  • Abraham, who's a self-confessed motorcycle fanatic and a eager follower of MotoGP, will likely be seen selling MotoGP to a wider viewers base in India by a marketing campaign – "MotoGP, Race Lagate Hai". Previous to the affiliation, the actor has shared the stage with MotoGP legend "The Physician"-Valentino Rossi and has frequented many MotoGP races.

Bvlgari Appoints Priyanka Chopra as its Global Brand Ambassador

  • Italian luxury brand Bvlgari appointed actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas as global brand ambassador.
  • In her new role, Chopra Jonas will support the Roman high jewellery house in amplifying the brand around the world, with a particular focus on themes of women empowerment, diversity and inclusion. Bvlgari is known for its gemstone jewellery, watches, fragrances, accessories and leather goods.

Kathakali Exponent Nelliyode Vasudevan Namboothiri Passes Away

  • Well-known Kathakali exponent Nelliyodu Vasudevan Namboothiri passed away at the age of 81.
  • Known for the portrayal of the negative 'chuvanna thadi' (red beard) characters in the classical dance drama, he also excelled in enacting the roles of "vattamudi" and "penkari."
  • Besides the characters of negative shades like 'Kali', 'Dushasanan' and 'Bakan', he was famous for the pious roles like 'Kuchelan' too.
  • A scholar in Sanskrit and Hindu Puranas, Namboothiri was a recipient of several honours including Kendra Sangeet Natak Akademi award, Kerala Santeetha Nataka Akademi Award, Kerala State Kathakali Prize and many more.
