3rd Edition of India-Uzbekistan Joint Military Exercise Begins in Yangiarik

  • The third edition of the joint training exercise between India's and Uzbekistan's armies - EX-DUSTLIK - began in Uzbekistan's Yangiarik. The last edition of DUSTLIK was held in Uttarakhand's Ranikhet last March. The joint exercise focused on Counter Terrorism operations in semi-urban terrain under a United Nations Mandate.
  • The Indian contingent comprised the platoon strength of the Grenadiers Regiment and the Uzbek Army contingent was represented by troops of the North Western Military District.

India successfully Test Fires Surface to Surface BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missile

  • India successfully test fired the surface to surface BrahMos supersonic cruise missile in the UT of Andaman and Nicobar. The extended range missile hit its target with pinpoint accuracy.
  • Earlier, in the first week of March the Indian Navy also successfully test-fired a long-range version of the BrahMos cruise missile.

Indian Army Gets Boost of Rs. 4,000 crore Surveillance Satellite

  • In a major capability boost for the Indian Army, the Defence Ministry cleared a Rs. 4,000 crore proposal for a dedicated surveillance satellite to keep an eye on the activities along the borders with China and Pakistan.
  • The project for the satellite GSAT 7B will be carried out in partnership with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
  • The Indian Navy and Air Force already have dedicated satellites of their own and the approval to this will help the Indian Army to achieve the capability.

LAMITIYE- 2022 Joint Military Exercise

  • An Indian Army contingent reached Seychelles for the ninth edition of the Joint Military Exercise Lamitiye 2022 between the Indian Army and Seychelles Defence Forces (SDF). The exercise is being conducted at the Seychelles Defence Academy (SDA) from March 22 to 31.
  • The exercise aims to share experiences gained during various operations against hostile forces in a semi-urban environment and enhance capability to undertake joint operations. The Indian Army comprises troops from the 2/3 Gorkha Rifles group (Prikanthi Battalion).
  • Lamitiye, which in Creole means friendship, is a biennial training event being conducted in Seychelles since 2001.

NATO Military Exercise 'Cold Response 2022' Begins in Norway

  • The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) organised the massive military drill 'Cold Response 2022' in Norway in March 2022, and will continue till April 01, 2022. The exercise is held in Norway every second year, for NATO Allies and partners. Cold Response is a long-planned and defensive exercise where Norway and its allies exercise in defending Norway against external threats. The exercise has been planned and informed about long before the war in Ukraine.
  • The Norwegian-led exercise provides an opportunity to train together in cold weather conditions over challenging terrain and demonstrates NATO's ability to respond decisively to any threat, from any direction. Around 30,000 troops from 27 nations are taking part in the 2022 edition of the exercise, with about 220 aircraft and more than 50 vessels. This is the largest 'Cold Response' being exercise conducted in Norway since the 1980s.

As Tensions with Russian Rise, NORAD Conducts Air, Missile Defence Operation

  • The North American Aerospace Defense Command, better known as NORAD, conducted exercises in the Far North.
  • Dubbed 'Operation Noble Defender', the exercises were an arctic air defence operation involving military aircraft and personnel from Canada and the United States.
  • This recurring operation was designed to confirm the Canadian NORAD Region's capabilities to respond to both aircraft and cruise missiles threatening North America.
