National Energy Conservation Day

  • The National Energy Conservation Day is celebrated every year on December 14 since 1991. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under Ministry of Power spearheads the celebrations every year.
  • The objective to celebrate the National Energy Conservation Day is to drive mass awareness about the importance of energy efficiency and conservation.
  • BEE recognizes and encourages endeavours of industries in reducing energy consumption by felicitating them with National Energy Conservation Awards. BEE also awards prizes to the national winners of the annual National Painting Competition on Energy Conservation.

Centre to Organize "Innovation Week" to Encourage Startup Ecosystem in India

  • As a part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, a week-long event, "Celebrating Innovation Ecosystem", to be hosted by Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), is proposed to be held in January, 2022.
  • The event will mark the 6th anniversary of the launch of the Startup India initiative.
  • DPIIT Secretary, Anurag Jain reviewed the project at a high-level meeting.
  • The key objectives of the Innovation Week will be to bring together the country's key Startups, entrepreneurs, investors, policy makers and other national/ international stakeholders for a specially curated event on innovation and entrepreneurship and to exchange knowledge on best practices on nurturing Startup ecosystems.

20 Years of 2001 Parliament Attack

  • President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union ministers paid tribute to people who lost their lives in the 2001 Parliament attack for their "service to the nation and supreme sacrifice."
  • "I pay homage to brave security personnel who laid down their lives on this day in 2001, defending the Parliament of the world's largest democracy against a dastardly terrorist attack. The nation shall forever remain grateful to them for their supreme sacrifice," President Kovind wrote on Twitter.
  • Five heavily armed terrorists stormed inside the Parliament complex and opened fire indiscriminately on December 13, 2001, killing as many as 14 people, mostly security forces personnel and a civilian.

International Mountain Day 2021

  • December 11 is celebrated as International Mountain Day every year. The date was designated by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
  • Celebrated since 2003, International Mountain Day creates awareness about the importance of mountains to life to highlight the opportunities and constraints in mountain development and to build alliances that will bring positive change to mountain peoples and environments around the world, according to the United Nations.
  • This year's theme for International Mountain Day is Sustainable Mountain Tourism. According to the UN, mountain tourism attracts around 15-20 per cent of global tourism.

73rd Anniversary of the Adaptation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

  • The Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh said that Decmeber 10, 2021 marks the 73rd Anniversary of the Adaptation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
  • As soon as the House met for the day, Mr. Harivansh said that the theme is finding solutions to the deep-rooted problems of discrimination in the country and all should work towards upholding basic human rights.
  • He said, it is the responsibility of all to be inclusive and reiterate unwavering commitment to do the same.

International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the...

  • The International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime is marked annually on 9 December.
  • It is observed to raise awareness about genocide and the role of the United Nations' Genocide Convention in preventing it.
  • This year marks the 73rd anniversary of the Convention, which establishes the duty of governments and states to prevent crimes of genocide and punish those who who are involved in the heinous crime.

Ministry of Power celebrates Energy Conservation Week

  • The Ministry of Power is celebrating Energy Conservation Week under Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav from 8th to 14th December 2021.
  • Various activities are being undertaken by Power CPSUs  as part of the celebrations.
  • The Bureau of Energy Efficiency has been organizing National Level Painting Competitions on Energy Conservation for school children.
  • This year, the theme for the competition is 'AzadikaAmritMahotsav: Energy Efficient India" and 'Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav: Cleaner Planet'.
  • The State level painting competition will be organized from 1st to 10th December 2021 in all 36 States and Union Territories of the country, and it will culminate to a National Level Painting on 12th December 2021 at New Delhi.
  • The winners of the National level competition will be awarded on the occasion of National Energy Conservation Day, December 14th.

International Anti-Corruption Day

  • International Anti-Corruption Day is observed on December 9 to raise awareness on the importance of getting rid of corruption. Corruption affects every area in our society and preventing corruption unlocks progress towards sustainable development goals.
  • The United Nations took its first step to fight against International Corruption in December 2003. The UNCAC United Nations Convention Against Corruption was drafted on October 31, 2003. UNAC is a treaty signed by the UN member states. The aim of this treaty is to legally bind members of the states to work in reducing corruption to enforce law and order.
  • The theme of International Anti-Corruption Day 2021 was "Your Right, Your Role: Say no to Corruption".
