World Meteorological Day

  • World Meteorological Day is observed every year on March 23 to commemorate the formal establishment of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) in 1950. The day highlights the essential role that 'National Meteorological and Hydrological Services' (NMHS) play in the safety and wellbeing of the society.
  • The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), an organization of the United Nations, was created on March 23, 1950 to replace the International Meteorological Organization. It began operations in 1951 to coordinate member nation in the fields of meteorology, operational hydrology, and Earth sciences for the security of their population. The first World Meteorological Day was held on March 23, 1961.
  • World Meteorological Day has a different theme each year and the theme for 2023 was 'The Future of Weather, Climate and Water across Generations.'

Martyrs' Day or Shaheed Diwas

  • Martyrs' Day or Shaheed Diwas is observed on several dates in India to remember the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the country. March 23 is celebrated as Martyrs' Day to commemorate the martyrdom of Bhagat Singh, Shivram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar who were hanged to death by the Britishers.
  • Although this day is not a recognised holiday, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann declared it as the gazetted holiday in the state.
  • Martyrs' Day is recognised nationally on January 30 to mark the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi in 1948, by Nathuram Godse.

Bihar Diwas

  • Bihar Diwas is an annual commemoration on March 22, which marks the day in 1912 when the British partitioned the state of Bihar from the Bengal presidency. It is a public holiday across the state.
  • The official celebration of this day, including various events and programs, began in 2011 and has continued ever since.
  • Prior to its formation, the region was part of the larger Bengal Province that included present-day West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and parts of Odisha and Bangladesh.
  • Each year, Bihar Diwas is celebrated with a distinct theme. The theme of Bihar Diwas or Bihar Day 2023 was "Yuva Shakti Bihar Ki Pragati," which translates to "Progress of Bihar through Youth Power."

World Water Day

  • World Water Day is observed on March 22 every year. According to the United Nations website, the idea behind celebrating the day is to "support the achievement of sustainable development goal (SDG) 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030."
  • The main objective of the day is to aware and inspire people to sustainably manage the freshwater resources and learn more about water-related issues like water pollution, water scarcity, inadequate water, and lack of sanitation, and take appropriate steps to make a difference.
  • The resolution to observe World Water Day was first adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 22, 1992, after which March 22 was declared as World Water Day and is celebrated around the world since then. The first World Water Day was observed in the year 1993.
  • The theme for World Water Day 2023 was 'Accelerating the change to solve the water and sanitation crisis'.

International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

  • International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed on March 21 every year.
  • On October 26, 1966, the UN General Assembly passed Resolution 2142 (XXI) designating March 21st as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. This day was chosen because, in 1960, 69 peaceful protesters were killed by police in Sharpeville, South Africa, while demonstrating against the apartheid "pass laws". By establishing this day of commemoration, the General Assembly urged the global community to intensify its efforts to eradicate all types of racial discrimination, especially as it pertains to the struggle against apartheid in South Africa.
  • The 2023 theme of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination focused on the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).

World Poetry Day

  • March 21 is celebrated as World Poetry Day. The day is an occasion to celebrate poetry and its importance in life.
  • The origin of world poetry day can be traced to Paris. In 1999 the members of the United Nations first thought of honouring the role of poetry in life. World Poetry Day was first observed in October, this was before the United Nations had set a specific date for this day.
  • In an attempt to celebrate a diverse form of poetry with unity, and celebrate its meaning to individuals, and various forms of poetry in various languages, March 21 was officially declared World Poetry Day.
  • The theme for World Poetry Day 2023 was 'Always be a poet, even in prose.'

World Forestry Day

  • International Forest Day is celebrated every year on March 21 with an aim to raise awareness about the values, significance, and contributions of the forests in maintaining the balance between ecosystems on the earth.
  • In 1971, the 16th session of the Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) voted to constitute "World Forestry Day" and later, the Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) held World Forest Days for six years from 2007 to 2012.
  • Finally, on November 28, 2012, The United Nations General Assembly designated March 21 to be celebrated as the International Day of Forests (IDF). The UN declaration encouraged governments to organise and carry out activities and afforestation campaigns at all levels.
  • "Forests and health" was the theme for International Forest Day 2023.

International Day of Happiness

  • The International Day of Happiness is an annual celebration that occurs on March 20. International Day of Happiness's purpose is to emphasize the importance of happiness and the overall well-being of individuals.
  • Resolution 66/281 of 12 July 2012 of the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 20 March as the International Day of Happiness stating the relevance of happiness and well-being as a goal and aspiration in the lives of people around the world. The United Nations initiated this event following Bhutan's advocacy for national happiness. The first International Day of Happiness was celebrated in 2013.
  • The theme of International Day of Happiness 2023 was "Be Mindful, Be Grateful, Be Kind."

World Oral Health Day

  • World Oral Health Day is observed globally every year on March 20, with the primary objective of increasing awareness about the significance of oral health. The Oral Health day aims to encourage individuals to adopt good oral hygiene practices, take care of their teeth, and learn ways to prevent dental problems.
  • World Oral Health Day was first observed on September 12, 2007, as World Oral Health Awareness Day, initiated by FDI World Dental Federation. However, in 2013, the FDI in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) established March 20 as the official date for World Oral Health Day.
  • Since its establishment, World Oral Health Day has been celebrated annually in more than 100 countries worldwide.
  • The theme for 2023 was 'Be Proud of Your Mouth,' which is the same theme used for the past three years.

Ordnance Factory Day

  • Ordnance Factory Day is observed every year on March 18 to commemorate the foundation of the first Ordnance Factory in colonial India at Cossipore near Kolkata in 1801. The Indian Ordnance Factories, which operate under the Ministry of Defence (MoD, celebrate the day as an event that gives the unique opportunity to exhibit the research, development, production, marketing logistics of the vast array of arms and ammunition by the ordnance factories in the country.
  • The history and development of ordnance factories is linked to the British era in India. The East India Company of England, to increase their economic interest and political hold, considered manufacturing military hardware as a vital element. The British authorities in 1775 established a Board of Ordnance in Fort William, Kolkata, which marks the official beginning of the Army Ordnance in India.

Global Recycling Day

  • Every year on March 18, Global Recycling Day is celebrated to increase people's comprehension about the harmful effects of plastic on the environment. This day also promotes recycling as a crucial concept and encourages people to organize events throughout the year to spread awareness about this cause.
  • Global Recycling Day is a relatively new event that was established on March 18, 2018, by the Global Recycling Foundation. The foundation recognized that recycling is a critical solution to reduce the waste and pollution that harms the planet, and they wanted to create a global platform to promote this cause.
