International Week of Solidarity with the Peoples of Non-Self-Governing Territories

  • The United Nations designated May 25 to 31 as the 'International Week of Solidarity with the Peoples of Non-Self-Governing Territories'. This observance was established by the UN General Assembly on December 6, 1999. According to the UN Charter, a Non-Self-Governing Territory refers to a territory where its people have not yet achieved complete self-government.
  • The International Week of Solidarity with the Peoples of Non-Self-Governing Territories holds significant importance in highlighting the ongoing struggles of these territories and promoting their right to self-determination.

World Thyroid Day

  • World Thyroid Awareness Day is marked annually on May 25 to raise global awareness about thyroid diseases and their impact on people's health. The initiative aims to promote understanding, early detection, and proper management of thyroid disorders.
  • It was officially adopted during the Annual General Meeting preceding the European Thyroid Association (ETA) congress in September 2007. The choice of May 25 was not arbitrary but held special significance for the ETA. This date marks the anniversary of the ETA's foundation in 1965.
  • The theme for World Thyroid Awareness Day 2023 was 'It's not you. It's your thyroid'.

Indian Commonwealth Day

  • Commonwealth Day is celebrated to honour the nations that come under umbrella of Commonwealth. It is marked by people all over the Commonwealth in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Americas, the Pacific and Europe.
  • The day aims to achieve various shared objectives and shed light on the issues and find ways to solve them. India and some other countries celebrate Commonwealth Day on May 24. Meanwhile, the rest of the world marks it on the second Monday of March.
  • Commonwealth Day dates back to 1901, when it was established to pay tribute to Queen Victoria after her death on January 22, 1901. This important day was inaugurated on May 24, 1902 coinciding with the birthday of Queen Victoria. In 1958, Harold Macmillan, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom at the time, acknowledged the changing dynamics of relations between Commonwealth member states. As a result, they decided to change the name of Empire Day to Commonwealth Day.

World Turtle Day

  • Every year, World Turtle Day is marked on May 23 to help people understand the importance of turtles and tortoises.
  • The celebration of World Turtle Day was initiated by the non-profit American Tortoise Rescue organisation in the year 2000. The organisation was founded in Malibu, California in 1990 by Susan Tellem and Marshall Thompson.
  • The theme of World Turtle Day 2023 is 'I Love Turtle'.

International Day for Biological Diversity

  • The International Day for Biological Diversity is observed annually on May 22 to raise awareness and promote the conservation of biological diversity. This day serves as a reminder of the importance of biodiversity and the need to protect and restore it.
  • From its creation by the Second Committee of the UN General Assembly in 1993 until 2000, it was held on December 29 to celebrate the day the Convention on Biological Diversity went into effect. On December 20, 2000, the date was shifted to commemorate the adoption of the Convention on May 22, 1992, at the Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit, and partly to avoid the many other holidays that occur in late December.
  • The theme for International Day for Biological Diversity 2023 was 'From Agreement to Action: Building Back Biodiversity'.
