International Day of the Girl Child

  • Every year on October 11, the International Day of the Girl Child is commemorated to promote awareness about the importance of and potential of girls as the future of our society. According to the official website of the United Nations, this year's (2023) goal is to bring together teenage girls and stand up for their rights, including UN officials, NGOs, corporations, and governments.
  • In the 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, for the first time in history, an action plan to improve the rights of girls was proposed. The International Day of the Girl Child was declared on October 11 by the United Nations General Assembly in 2011 through resolution 66/170.
  • It was a day set aside each year to honour girls. In 2012, the inaugural International Day of the Girl Child was celebrated. It emphasised the need to stop child marriages.
  • The theme for the International Day of the Girl Child 2023 is – "Invest in Girls' Rights: Our Leadership, Our Well-being". The objective is to create a strategic moment that concentrates and celebrates the voices of girls while urging those in positions of official authority to enhance their financial support for girls' rights.

Jitendra Singh addressed the 10th India-Sweden Innovation Day

  • Addressing the 10th "India-Sweden Innovation Day" meet in New Delhi today, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Science & Technology, MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh called for strengthening India-Sweden collaboration to effectively address pressing global challenges while remaining steadfast in the pursuit of immediate objectives on the path to achieving a net-zero future.
  • Dr Jitendra Singh expressed his gratitude to Mr Andreas Carlson, Minister of Infrastructure, Government of Sweden for participating in the 10th edition of the India Sweden Innovation Day and said that India is ready to enhance the bilateral partnership, especially in the realm of Science & Technology, and to bolster our innovation ecosystem.

World Mental Health Day

  • World Mental Health Day is observed on October 10 every year. It is a day dedicated to raising awareness about mental health issues and promoting mental well-being globally. The day aims to highlight the importance of mental health and to mobilise efforts in support of mental health education, awareness, and advocacy.
  • The idea of celebrating a day for mental health awareness was first proposed in 1992 during the World Federation for Mental Health Congress in Cape Town, South Africa. After this proposal got approved, the first ever mental health day was celebrated on October 10, 1992.
  • World Mental Health Day is also recognised to commemorate the establishment of World Federation for Mental Health in 1948. This organisation plays a crucial role in promoting mental health on a global level, and advocating for the rights of people with mental health conditions.
  • The theme of World Mental Health Day 2023 is 'Mental health is a universal human right'. The purpose of this theme is to improve knowledge, raise awareness and drive actions that promote and protect everyone's mental health as a universal human right.

World Space Week

  • World Space Week is observed every year starting from October 4 to October 10. This is one of the largest annual space events worldwide. The week is aimed at inspiring students and educating the public about space activities. World Space Week is also an occasion to garner support for various space programmes and to build international cooperation in space outreach, according to the United Nations.
  • World Space Week was after a resolution was passed by the UN General Assembly on December 6, 1999. The UN General Assembly proclaimed World Space Week to celebrate the contributions of space science and technology to the betterment of the human condition. The beginning and closing dates of World Space Week were chosen to commemorate two significant events in space exploration. One of them occurred on October 4, 1957, when the first human-made Earth satellite, Sputnik 1, was launched. On October 10, 1967, a treaty was signed to ensure the peaceful use of Outer Space, including the Moon and other celestial bodies.
  • World Space Week is celebrated with a specified theme announced by the World Space Week Association every year. The theme for World Space Week 2023 is 'Space and Entrepreneurship'.

National Post Day

  • Every year, on October 10, India observes National Post Day, an extension of World Post Day on October 9. This day serves to raise awareness about the enduring role of the Indian Postal System, which has served the nation for over 150 years.
  • In 1854, Lord Dalhousie laid the foundation for India Post. Today, it operates under the purview of the Ministry of Communications and stands as one of the world's most extensive postal networks. India boasts 23 Postal Circles and 9 postal zones, encompassing military post offices. Notably, the Indian postal system employs a 6-digit PIN Code System, a concept introduced by Shriram Bhikaji Velankar on August 15, 1972.

World Post Day

  • World Post Day, which is celebrated annually on October 9, reminds us about the importance of traditional postal services in the ever-evolving world.
  • World Post Day is celebrated each year on 9 October. The event was declared by the 1969 Universal Postal Congress in Tokyo, Japan as a means to mark the anniversary of the Universal Postal Union's (UPU) creation in 1874.
  • The theme for World Post Day 2023 is 'Together for Trust: Collaborating for a safe and connected future'.

Indian Air Force Day

  • October 8 is celebrated as Indian Air Force Day because on this day, the Air Force in India was officially raised in 1932 as the supporting force of the Royal Air Force of the United Kingdom. The first operational squadron came into being in April 1933. After participation in World War II, the Air Force in India came to be called the Royal Indian Air Force in the mid 1940s.
  • In 1950, after the republic came into being it became the Indian Air Force. From six officers and 19 Hawai Sepoys back in 1933, the Air Force now is the fourth largest in the world.
  • The Indian Air Force celebrated its 91st anniversary in 2023.
  • In 2023 Indian Air Force (IAF) Day parade was held at Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh in line with the government choosing to hold major defence events outside the national capital.

National Wildlife Week

  • The National Wildlife Week is celebrated from October 2 to 8 every year in India. This week aims at protecting and preserving India's flora and fauna.
  • National Wildlife Week in India has a storied history that dates back to 1952 when the Indian Board of Wildlife first conceptualized the idea. Originally observed as Wildlife Day in 1955, it evolved into a week-long celebration in 1957, gaining significance as a platform to highlight the long-term objectives of safeguarding the country's precious wildlife.
  • This year's (2023) theme, 'Partnerships for Wildlife Conservation', reflects the collaborative efforts required to protect and preserve the nation's rich biodiversity.

World Cotton Day

  • The World Cotton day is celebrated on October 7 as a global celebration of cotton and its stakeholders, from field to fabric and beyond.
  • The first World Cotton Day was proposed by the World Trade Organization on October 7, 2019, by the Cotton Four, four sub-Saharan African cotton producers Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, and Mali, collectively known as the Cotton Four (WTO).The Cotton-4 countries` initiative to organise World Cotton Day was welcomed by the WTO on October 7, 2019. Together with the secretariats of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, the International Cotton Advisory Committee, and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the WTO Secretariat organised the event (UNCTAD). The initiative offers assistance to the "Cotton-4″ nations, which are Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad and Mali, and other cotton-producing countries in Africa, to develop cotton by-products and its markets.
  • The theme for World Cotton Day 2023 is 'Making Cotton Fair and Sustainable for All, from Farm to Fashion'.
