World Autism Awareness Day

  • World Autism Awareness Day is a global healthcare event celebrated on the 2nd of April every year, about the acceptance, support and the inclusion of autistic people, and for the advocation of their rights. Significant progress has been achieved in recent years, which facilitated in understanding autism and accepting the countless remarkable autistic champions laboured diligently to share their victories and flourishes to the world.
  • World Autism Awareness Day was designated by a resolution passed by the United Nations General Assembly on November 1, 2007, to raise public awareness about autism and work towards empowering and accepting individuals with autism, recognizing their contribution to society.
  • The theme for World Autism Awareness Day 2024 is "Moving from Surviving to Thriving: Autistic Individuals share regional perspectives". This theme emphasizes the need to change the focus from simply dealing with autism to creating an environment in which autistic people can thrive.

Prevention of Blindness Week 2024

  • Prevention of Blindness Week 2024 is celebrated by Centre from April 1 to 7 to make people aware of their eyes. Throughout the week people get education related to health care and eye care.
  • Jawaharlal Nehru and Raj Kumari Amrit Kaur founded the National Society for the Prevention of Blindness in 1960 under the Societies Registration Act of 1860. It is an entirely voluntary organisation that accepts donations and contributions and actively collaborates with Sight Savers, Rotary International and other significant companies.
  • Notably, India was also the first country to seek a subsidised loan from the World Bank's International Development Agency to eradicate blindness.

Odisha Foundation Day

  • On April 1, Odisha Day, or Utkala Dibasa, is celebrated to commemorate the formation of the state of Odisha. The occasion is joyously celebrated throughout the state, with individuals adorning their homes and public spaces with flags, banners and flowers in the colours of the state flag, symbolising the vibrant culture and heritage of Odisha.
  • Utkal Divas is not just a celebration of Odisha's formation but also a celebration of its rich heritage and culture. From traditional Odia recipes, folk music, dances, paintings to tourist attractions, the state holds immense cultural wealth and Utkal Divas is a wonderful event to pay tribute and experience all that the state has to offer. 
  • The state of Odisha got its own identity as a separate state in the year 1936, after disassociating itself from Bihar and Bengal.

  • The theme for World Theatre Day 2024 is 'Theatre and a Culture of Peace'.

Purple Day of Epilepsy

  • Purple Day of Epilepsy, a global campaign raising awareness for epilepsy, is observed on March 26 every year. This day is dedicated to raising awareness about epilepsy, a neurological condition that affects millions of people worldwide.
  • World Purple Day traces its origins back to 2008 when Cassidy Megan, a young Canadian girl, initiated the idea to increase awareness about epilepsy. Inspired by her struggles with the condition and the lack of understanding amongst her peers, Cassidy envisioned a day when people would wear purple to show support for individuals living with epilepsy.
  • The official theme for Purple Day of Epilepsy 2024 is 'Lets Talk About Epilepsy'. This powerful theme emphasises the importance of open communication and breaking down the stigma surrounding epilepsy.
