Adventure Tourism Meet 2024 to Kick Off in Shillong on October 4

  • Shillong in Meghalaya will host the Adventure Tourism Meet (ATM) 2024 on October 4, organised by Indian Express Online in collaboration with Meghalaya Tourism.
  • This daylong event, which will take place at the State Convention Centre, aims to bring together tourism leaders, adventure enthusiasts, and industry stakeholders to discuss the potential of adventure tourism in India, particularly in Meghalaya.
  • The meet will feature prominent speakers, including Meghalaya Minister of Tourism Bah Paul Lyngdoh, Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida, and Meghalaya Commissioner and Secretary (tourism) Vijay Kumar D.

Ministry of Tourism Unveils Paryatan Mitra and Didi Initiative

  • The Ministry of Tourism launched 'Paryatan Mitra and Paryatan Didi', a responsible tourism initiative aimed at improving tourist experiences across India. The initiative focuses on empowering local communities, especially women and youth, to serve as ambassadors and storytellers of their destinations, enhancing hospitality, cleanliness, and sustainability.
  • The initiative, inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision, aims to promote tourism as a means of social inclusion, employment, and economic growth. The program focuses on training individuals in hospitality, safety, and sustainability, while emphasising cleanliness and the importance of a positive tourist experience.

Ministry of Tourism Announces Winners of Best Tourism Villages Competition-2024

  • Ministry of Tourism, Government of India announced winners of the Best Tourism Villages Competition 2024, on the occasion of World Tourism Day.
  • To promote tourism to the Soul of India (India's villages), the Best Tourism Villages Competition was introduced in 2023. The focus was to identify and recognise villages which preserve and promote cultural and natural assets through community-based values and commitment to sustainability in all aspects.
  • The first edition of the Best Tourism Villages Competition in 2023 saw applications from 795 villages. In the second edition of the Best Tourism Villages Competition, a total of 991 applications were received from 30 States and UTs, out of which 36 villages were recognised as winners across 8 categories of the Best Tourism Villages competition 2024.
  • Some of the winners are: Harshil and Gunji in Uttrakhand were recognised as best Vibrant Villages, Chitrakote in Chhattisgarh was recognised among the ones for Community Based Tourism, Kuthlur in Karanataka was among the ones recognised for Adventure Tourism.

Sujan Jawai the Only Indian Stay That Made It to "World's Best 50 Hotels"

  • Rajasthan's Sujan Jawai was named among the world's best fifty hotels. Located in Rajasthan's Pali, an area popular for its leopard sightings, it is the only Indian hotel that made it to the prestigious list and stands at 43rd rank. The hotel received a prize from 'The World's 50 Best Hotels' in Guildhall, London.
  • The "World's 50 Best Hotels" are chosen based on feedback from anonymous voters across the world. The voters include travel journalists, hoteliers and seasoned travel specialists. A total of 600 voters curated the "World's 50 Best Hotels" list.
  • The other hotels featured in the list include Capella Bangkok, which ranked first, Paris' Cheval Blanc, Raffles Singapore, Aman Tokyo, Dubai's The Lana, and Paris' le Bristol among others.

Delhi Airport Ranks 24th among Top 'Megahub' Airports Globally

  • Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) was ranked among the top 25 "megahub" airports globally by international aviation data and analytics firm OAG. IGIA improved its position to the 24th spot from last year's 25th in OAG's latest list of megahub airports—those with the highest ratio of possible scheduled international connections to the number of destinations served.
  • The only other Indian airport among the top 50 megahub airports—Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA)—however dropped 10 spots from last year to the 44th position.
  • London Heathrow, Kuala Lampur International Airport, Tokyo-Haneda, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, and Seoul's Incheon Airport—in that order—were ranked as the global top five megahub airports by OAG. Kuala Lampur International Airport was ranked as the top LCC megahub airport globally, followed by Manila Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Incheon Airport, and Singapore Changi Airport.
