International No Diet Day

  • May 6 marks International No Diet Day, a global celebration dedicated to promoting body acceptance, embracing diversity and respecting all body shapes and sizes. This important day aims to raise awareness about weight discrimination and fatphobia, while also challenging harmful dieting practices. International No Diet Day encourages individuals to prioritise their mental and physical well-being over restrictive diets.
  • International No Diet Day was initiated in the United Kingdom by English feminist Mary Evans Young. Mary Evans, who had her struggles with body acceptance and anorexia, organized the first No Diet Day on May 5, 1992, in Hyde Park, London.
  • It was a small picnic attended by a dozen women who wore stickers that read, "Ditch That Diet." However, the date was subsequently changed to May 6, 1993, to avoid conflicts with Cinco de Mayo celebrations.
  • 'Embrace Yourself: Reject Diet Culture, Love You', this year's (2024) theme is all about embracing yourself.

World Laughter Day (First Sunday of May)

  • World Laughter Day is observed on the first Sunday in May. This year (2024), it's being celebrated on May 5.
  • World Laughter Day was established in 1998 by Dr. Madan Kataria, an Indian physician and the founder of the Laughter Yoga movement. Dr. Kataria created the day to raise awareness about the therapeutic benefits of laughter and its ability to bring people together, regardless of cultural or geographical differences.

International Firefighter's Day

  • International Firefighters' Day (IFFD) is observed on May 4 every year. This day is dedicated to the firefighters who put their lives on the line every day to protect their communities and the environment. The day is also observed to remember the firefighters who have sacrificed their lives while serving the community.
  • On 2 December 1998, a tragic accident happened in in Linton, Australia, in which, resulting in the death of five firefighters from Geelong West Fire Brigade on the spot. The establishment of International Firefighters' Day took inspiration from that dreadful event. The five firefighters were on their way to refill their tanker with water when the truck was struck by a violent wind change, engulfing them in flames and killing all five. They were Garry Vredeveldt, Chris Evans, Stuart Davidson, Jason Thomas, and Matthew Armstrong.
  • The official date for International Firefighters' Day is 4 May. This date was chosen because on this day, St. Florian, the patron saint of all firefighters, was killed. St. Florian was the first known commander of one firefighting squad in the Roman Empire. He died after trying to protect the same humane ideas as firefighters all over the world.

World Press Freedom Day

  • Every year on May 3, the whole world celebrates World Press Freedom Day. The day is commemorated to highlight the significance of press freedom globally and to recognise the challenges encountered by journalists. The day also pays tribute to all the journalists who have lost their lives. World Press Freedom Day was first declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993. This declaration came after a recommendation made in 1991 at the twenty-sixth General Conference session of UNESCO. The year will mark the 31st anniversary of World Press Freedom Day.
  • This year (2024), the Government of Chile and UNESCO hosted the 31st World Press Freedom Day Conference in Santiago, providing a global platform for discussions, debates, and the exchange of ideas on the state of press freedom around the world and strengthening its foundation.
  • The theme for World Press Freedom Day 2024 is 'A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis'.

  • World Tuna Day is celebrated every year on May 2. The day is dedicated to raising awareness about the decline in tuna stocks worldwide and the need to effectively implement international regulations to safeguard future tuna supplies. Tuna is a highly nutritious and valuable fish that is a significant source of food for both developing and developed countries.
  • The World Tuna Day was first observed in 2017. The day was established by the United Nations General Assembly to raise awareness about the declining tuna population and to promote the conservation and management of tuna fisheries. The tuna industry provides a significant source of food security, economic development, and employment opportunities for many countries.
