Odisha Launches New Scholarship Scheme for SC, ST Students to Study Abroad
The Odisha government launched a new overseas scholarship programme aimed at supporting Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) students who wish to pursue postgraduate and doctoral studies in top global institutions.
The scheme, named 'Videsh Siksha Bruti', marks one of the state's most significant initiatives to expand higher education opportunities for disadvantaged communities.
Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj formally inaugurated the scheme and announced that it will be implemented from the 2025 to 2026 academic year.
Suraj said that students belonging to SC and ST categories with an annual family income of Rs. 12 lakh or below will be eligible to apply.
To qualify, applicants must have secured admission to postgraduate or PhD programmes at institutions ranked within the Top 200 in the QS World University Rankings.
Under the new scheme, each selected student will receive financial assistance of up to Rs. 25 lakh per year. This will support tuition fees, living expenses and other academic costs during their studies abroad.

Centre Announces Revised Guidelines for SC students under 'Top Class Scholarship Scheme' for 2024-25
The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment released updated guidelines for the 'Top Class Scholarship Scheme for SC Students', expanding financial support and tightening institutional accountability for the 2024–25 academic year.
The scheme aims to promote quality higher education for Scheduled Caste students by covering full tuition fees and providing academic allowances across India's premier institutions.
Under the revised financial norms, the Centre will directly transfer full tuition fees and non-refundable charges to students through DBT, capped at Rs. 2 lakh per year for private institutions.
Students will also receive an academic allowance of Rs. 86,000 in the first year and Rs 41,000 in subsequent years to cover living expenses, books and laptops. Beneficiaries will be barred from availing similar scholarships from other Central or State schemes.

165 Gram Panchayats in Ganjam Declared TB-free
Ganjam administration in Odisha felicitated representatives of 165 out of 503 gram panchayats in the district that were declared free from tuberculosis (TB). These panchayats were awarded with the national certification of TB Mukta Panchayat in a meeting.
MP (Berhampur) Pradeep Kumar Panigrahy lauded the role of elected panchayat members to make their panchayat free from TB and asked them to work towards making Ganjam free from TB.
The TB Mukta Panchayat is an initiative of the ministry of health and family welfare launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March 2023, to involve elected members of the panchayats to eliminate tuberculosis by 2027.
