Three Imprisoned Iranian Female Journalists Win Top UN Prize
UNESCO marked World Press Freedom Day by awarding its annual World Press Freedom Prize to three imprisoned Iranian female journalists. The winners, Niloufar Hamedi, Elaheh Mohammadi, and Narges Mohammadi, were recognised for their work in reporting on human rights abuses in Iran and their commitment to truth and accountability.
The UNESCO World Press Freedom Prize, named after Colombian journalist Guillermo Cano who was assassinated in 1986, is awarded to those who have made an outstanding contribution to press freedom. UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay emphasized the importance of paying tribute to women journalists who are prevented from doing their jobs and who face threats and attacks on their personal safety, saying: "Now more than ever, it is important to pay tribute to all women journalists who are prevented from doing their jobs and who face threats and attacks on their personal safety."

Meera Syal Receives a BAFTA Fellowship in London
Popular UK-based Indian-origin actress-writer Meera Syal was conferred a BAFTA Fellowship, the highest accolade bestowed by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) upon an individual in recognition of an outstanding and exceptional contribution to film and/or television. Meera, who was born to Punjabi parents and grew up in the West Midlands region of England, was honoured with an MBE and then a CBE by the late Queen Elizabeth II for her contribution to drama and literature.
Best known for television shows such as 'Goodness Gracious Me' and 'The Kumars at No. 42', Syal has made her mark as an award-winning actress, screenwriter and novelist over the years.

68th Filmfare Awards 2023
The 68th edition of the Hyundai Filmfare Awards took place at the Jio World Conventional Centre in Mumbai. This year's (2023) ceremony was co-hosted by Salman Khan, Ayushmann Khurrana, and Maniesh Paul, marking Salman Khan's first time as a host for the event. The awards were presented in collaboration with Maharashtra Tourism. The award ceremony was a platform for many up-and-coming artists to achieve their dreams of receiving the prestigious Black Lady trophy.

Russian Poet Maria Stepanova Wins Leipzig Book Prize 2023
Maria Stepanova, a powerful contemporary voice of Russian literature now living in exile in Berlin, was awarded the prestigious Leipzig Book Prize for European Understanding in 2023.
The Russian-Jewish author, whose novel 'In Memory of Memory explores Stalinism and the fall of the Soviet Union', was nominated for the Booker Prize in 2021, was honoured in Leipzig for her volume of poetry, Girls Without Clothes. It is described as a sensitive and highly poetic study of often hidden violence against the female body and the power imbalance that drives this oppression.
King Charles Confers Britain's Honorary MBE on UK-based Sanskrit Scholar
A well-known UK-based Sanskrit scholar and the Executive Director of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan centre in London was conferred an honorary Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) by King Charles III for services to Indian classical arts in Britain.
M. N. Nandakumara, who hails from the village of Mattur in Karnataka, was associated with the Bhavan for 46 years and welcomed Charles, the then Prince of Wales, to the popular Indian cultural hub on several occasions.
The honorary award, approved by the British monarch for foreign nationals for their contribution to public life, was confirmed by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). The honorary Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) has been conferred "for services to the teaching, performance and accessibility of Indian classical arts in the UK".

Power Grid Conferred with Global Gold Award for CSR Activities
Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (PGCIL), a Maharatna CPSU of Ministry of Power, was honoured with Global Gold Award by The Green Organisation for its CSR initiative. The recognition was given at the Green World Awards 2023 function held at Miami in the USA. Dr. V. K. Singh, Director (Personnel), POWERGRID received the award on behalf of the organisation.
The award is a recognition of POWERGRID's CSR work for improving agriculture productivity and rural livelihood through watershed management, community participation and better crop management practices in ten villages of Jaipatna Block of Kalahandi District in Odisha.
Breast Surgeon Dr. Raghu Ram Honoured with Telugu Association of London Award
Dr. Raghu Ram Pillarisetti, a renowned surgeon, was awarded the lifetime achievement award by the Telugu Association of London. He is the founding director of the AKIMS-Ushalakshmi Centre for Breast Diseases located in Hyderabad. Despite his relatively young age, Dr. Raghuram has become one of the few people to receive the award. He is also the only Indian living outside the UK to be bestowed with this honour.
Dr. Raghu Ram Pillarisetti, who is a recipient of the Padma Shri and Dr. B.C. Roy national award, has brought about a major transformation in the treatment of breast cancer in India by implementing various innovative measures over the course of 17 years. He founded the first comprehensive Breast Health Centre in South Asia and established a charitable foundation to raise awareness of breast cancer across the country. Dr. Raghu Ram also initiated the largest population-based screening programme in South Asia, which was implemented in the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh and is now being extended throughout the country.
