Education Ministry Plans Grand Celebration of Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas on Nov 15

  • The Ministry of Education will celebrate Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas on November 15 in a grand manner at schools, skill and higher education institutes across the country.
  • To commemorate the contribution of the tribal freedom fighters, the ministry, in association with the AICTE, UGC, Central Universities, Private Universities, other HEIs, CBSE, KVS, NVS and Skilling institutions will celebrate Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas with programmes such as debate competition on the theme 'Contribution of Janjati Heroes in freedom struggle', social activities, etc in the educational institutions across the country.
  • In 2021, the Central Government had declared November 15 as Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas, which is the birth anniversary of Birsa Minda.
  • "Birsa Munda was an iconic freedom fighter, social reformer and revered tribal leader of the country, who fought bravely against the exploitative system of the British colonial government, and became a legendary figure in his lifetime, often referred to as 'Bhagwan'. He organized and led the tribal movement, giving a call for "Ulgulan" (Revolt) to the tribals.

World Radiography Day

  • World Radiography Day is commemorated on November 8, every year, to mark the anniversary of the discovery of X-rays. A procedure that is used so widely is often taken for granted, but this medical marvel has helped the healthcare system discover a myriad of health issues. The day also celebrates the efforts of radiographers and radiologists around the world.
  • Commemorated by the International Society of Radiographers and Radiological Technology, the theme for World Radiography Day 2022 was "Radiographers at the Forefront of Patient Safety".
  • The day is commemorated to mark the anniversary of the discovery of x-rays by Professor Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen of the Wuerzburg University, Germany, in 1895. This was an accidental discovery by Professor Röntgen when he was working with a cathode-ray tube in his laboratory. This scientific breakthrough was extremely well-received.

Infant Protection Day

  • The Infant Protection Day is observed annually on November 7. This day is celebrated to spread awareness about the measures to be taken to save the lives of infants and provide sufficient protection and care.
  • In 1990 nearly 5 million infants died due to a lack of awareness of protecting Infants.
  • So, in the early 1900s, many countries decided to take the necessary steps for better child health care and to reduce Infant Mortality Rate (IMR). Europe was the first to start a campaign to improve child health care. European countries established Infant Protection Day in order to create awareness among the people about Child Care Services and to reduce Infant Mortality Rate. The Infant Mortality Rate has decreased from 100 to 10 deaths per 1000 births because of the awareness created by this day. Later America joined in this and started to celebrate Infant Protection Day to create awareness among the People. So Infant Protection Day was celebrated every year on 7th November.

National Cancer Awareness Day

  • National Cancer Awareness Day is observed to create awareness about treatment of the disease in the county, which is one of the leading causes of deaths. National Cancer Awareness Day was first announced in September 2014 by then Health Minister Harsh Vardhan. The date, November 7, was chosen as it is the birth anniversary of Nobel laureate Marie Curie, whose work led to the development of radiotherapy, which is used in cancer treatment.

International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict

  • The International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict is an international day observed annually on November 6. The International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict was established on November 5, 2001, by the United Nations General Assembly, during Kofi Atta Annan's tenure as Secretary-General.
  • At the time of war, it affects the ecosystem such as water supply is poisoned, the forest is burnt, animals being killed, etc. Though humanity has always counted its war casualties in terms of dead and wounded soldiers and civilians, destroyed cities and livelihoods, the environment has often remained the unpublicized victim of war. Water wells have been polluted, crops torched, forests cut down, soils poisoned, and animals killed to gain military advantage.

World Tsunami Awareness Day

  • World Tsunami Awareness Day is observed on November 5 every year. Japan is credited for starting this observance, owing to its repeated, bitter tsunamis experience. Over the years, it has built up major expertise in certain areas such as tsunami early warning, public action, and building back better after a disaster to reduce future impacts. The United Nations designated this day to raise awareness about the importance of education about tsunamis to ensure that communities act decisively and without panic when tsunami warnings reach them.
  • In December 2015, the UN General Assembly designated 5 November as World Tsunami Awareness Day, calling on countries, international bodies and civil society to raise tsunami awareness and share innovative approaches to risk reduction.

President Droupadi Murmu Inaugurates 7th India Water Week

  • President of India, Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the 7th edition of India Water Week (IWW) at the India Expo Centre in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Government of India is organising the 7th edition of India Water Week (IWW) from 1st to 5th November with the motive to raise awareness, conserve and use water resources in an integrated manner.
  • The five day long programme is set to bring together experts, planners and stakeholders from across the globe. The focus is to build dialogue, action plan and addressing issues for sustainability of water resources development as well. In addition, it also aims for a management system in accordance with sustainable development goals. The theme of the 7th edition of India Water Week was "Water Security for Sustainable Development and Equity".

International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists

  • International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists is observed on November 2. The day came into existence when the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) passed a resolution in December 2013. The day draws attention to impunity, i.e., culprits going unpunished, to crimes against journalists. It took a couple of years of work and extensive lobbying from IFEX (formerly International Freedom of Expression Exchange) and others to get the Resolution for marking the day passed.
  • The date for IDEI was chosen to commemorate the assassination of two journalists in Mali on November 2, 2013. Al Qaida claimed responsibility for the death and kidnapping of French media workers Claude Verlon and Ghislaine Dupont. The culprits remain unapprehended to this day. Official figures show a grim picture for other journalists as well.
