Amul's R. S. Sodhi Elected to Board of International Dairy Federation

  • The International Dairy Federation (IDF) has unanimously elected R. S. Sodhi, managing director, Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd or GCMMF that sells Amul branded products in India, to its board during the general assembly held on 1 June. He is alumni of the Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA). He joined GCMMF (Amul) in the year 1982 after completing his post-graduation from IRMA.
  • IDF is an international non-governmental, non-profit association and represents the global dairy sector. The federation ensures that right policies, standards, practices and regulations monitor the production of dairy products globally.

WhatsApp Appoints Paresh B. Lal as Grievance Officer for India

  • The Facebook-owned messaging app WhatsApp has named Paresh B. Lal as the Grievance Officer for India. WhatsApp has updated the details on its website for how to contact Mr Lal because, under the IT law, social media companies are required to display the names and other details of their grievance officers on their websites.
  • The appointment is in line with the government's new IT order that requires all the tech companies, like Google, Facebook, WhatsApp to appoint a grievance officer, nodal officer and a chief compliance officer from India. The grievance officer shall address the complaint within 24 hours and dispose of the complaint within 15 days.

  • Tejinder Singh, a veteran White House correspondent and founder and editor of the India America Today newswire, has passed away in the US.
  • Singh founded India America Today, an independent media organisation and news provider based in Washington, DC.

Maharaja of Erstwhile Kutch State Dies

  • The Maharaja of Kutch, Maharrao Pragmalji III, the titular ruler of the Jadeja dynasty of the erstwhile Kutch state, died of complications related to Covid-19.
  • The Maharaja had no children and with his death, the throne of the ruler of the erstwhile state remains vacant as he did not name an heir apparent.
  • Pragmalji III died and his last rites were conducted at Chhaterdi in Bhuj, the royal resting place, with Covid-19 guidelines. He was anointed as Maharrao and renamed Pragmalji III at a ceremony on October 17, 1991, after his father's death.

Jagjit Pavadia is President of Vienna based INCB

  • Jagjit Pavadia, the former Narcotics Commissioner of India and a retired officer of the Indian Revenue Service (Customs), has been elected president of the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB). She is the first Indian to be heading the Vienna-based organization and the second woman to hold this office.
  • The Board will pay particular attention to the timely supply of and access to controlled drugs during emergency situations. It will also continue its work on the development of guidelines for the control and monitoring of cannabis and cannabis-related substances. INCB monitors the compliance of UN Member States with the three international drug control conventions and the functioning of the international drug control system.

H.S. Doreswamy, Freedom Fighter Passes Away

  • Freedom fighter and activist H. S. Doreswamy died in Bengaluru. He was 103.
  • Born on April 10, 1918, Harohalli Srinivasaiah Doreswamy took part in the Quit India Movement and was jailed for 14 months. He had also participated in the 'Mysuru Chalo' movement to compel the then Mysuru Maharaja to accede to the Indian State post independence.
  • An alumni of the Central college in Bengaluru, Doreswamy was into the teaching profession and even ran a newspaper called 'Pauravani'.
  • He had taken part in various agitations till COVID-19 outbreak.
