Marathi Author, Activist Anil Awachat Passes Away

Marathi author and social activist Anil Awachat, better known as Baba, passed away. He was 78. Awachat was the founder-director of the Muktangan Rehabilitation Centre in Pune and associated with several social causes.
The centre was set up in 1986 to treat addiction and included a combination of medicine, therapies and activities.
Known for his books including Purnia, Awachat regularly wrote for Marathi magazines and other publications. He also had a stint as a journalist and was known for his reportage.

Charanjit Singh, Legendary Indian Hockey Player, Dies

Captain of India's 1964 Tokyo Olympics gold medal-winning hockey team, Charanjit Singh, died in Una, Himachal Pradesh. He was 90.
Besides captaining the Olympic gold-winning team in 1964, he was also a part of the silver-winning side in the 1960 edition of the Games. He was also a part of the 1962 Asian Games silver-winning team.

Kathakali patron Milena Salvini Passes Away

Padma Shri winner and Kathakali artist Milena Salvini passed away. Paris-born Milena joined Kerala Kalamandalam to learn the dance in 1965. She later became an ambassador of Indian dance forms.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the demise of noted Kathakali dancer Milena Salvini of France and said she will be remembered for her passion towards Indian culture.
She was conferred with Padma Shri in 2019 by the Government of India for her contribution to the field of performing arts.

GoodDot Ropes in Neeraj Chopra as its Brand Ambassador

Plant-based meat company GoodDot roped in Neeraj Chopra as its brand ambassador. With this association, the company wants to create awareness about the new category of plant-based meats. It also wants to send out a message that small changes in lifestyle and food choices can go a long way in making the world a better place.
The company provides alternatives to mutton, chicken and eggs and is a Direct-to-consumer (D2C) player so far and sells also through online marketplaces like Amazon, Flipkart, etc. It also sells in countries like Canada, Singapore, Nepal, Dubai, South Africa, Mauritius, and Oman.

Eminent Archaeologist and Epigraphist R. Nagaswamy Passes Away

R. Nagaswamy, the first Director of the Department of Archaeology, died at the age of 91.
He had deep knowledge of Tamil and Sanskrit. He obtained his MA degree in Sanskrit from the University of Madras. He was awarded a Ph.D. in Indian Arts by Pune University. After serving the Department of Archaeology in various capacities, he became its director in 1966 and held the post till his retirement in 1988.
Nagaswamy, whose name was synonymous with archaeology in Tamil Nadu, was always available for his views on the south Indian history, its temples, ahamas, Chola bronzes and the shastras ofBharatanatyam. He always had a simple theory for the greatness of Chola bronzes.
He penned a book, Masterpieces of Early South Indian Bronzes, in 1983 and compiled a coffeetable bookfor the Tamil Nadu government to mark the World Classical Tamil Conference.

Prajakta Koli Becomes UNDP India's First Youth Climate Champion

Content creator and actress Prajakta Koli became India's first UN Development Programme (UNDP) Youth Climate Champion under her partnership with the organisation.
The title was conferred to her following her contribution towards mental health, women's rights and girl child education through various global social campaigns.
UNDP aims to eliminate poverty, achieve sustainable growth and scale up human development in countries where it is required the most.
As a part of her responsibilities now, Prajakta will be entrusted with interacting with young minds to raise awareness around climate crisis, global warming and biodiversity loss and their impacts, the tremors of which are being felt by all sections of the society, especially the poor and marginalized communities.

Veteran Express Journalist Dinkar Raikar Passes Away

Senior journalist Dinkar Raikar who had a long association with The Indian Express Group and later the Lokmat Group passed away. He was 79.
Starting his career with The Indian Express as a reporter, Raikar later became the chief of the Mumbai bureau. Soon, he transitioned to Marathi journalism by joining the daily Loksatta (Indian Express Group) as Deputy Editor. After his retirement from Loksatta, he joined the Lokmat Group and was its Aurangabad Editor before taking over as Editor of the group.
With a career of over five decades in journalism, Raikar had personally witnessed crucial events that shaped Maharashtra's politics and culture.

Teenage Pilot Zara Rutherford Completes Solo Round-world Record

A teenage pilot became the youngest woman to fly solo around the world following a five-month challenge.
Zara Rutherford, 19, landed in Kortrijk-Wevelgem in Belgium, two months later than planned as a result of adverse weather.
During the trip she spent a month stuck in Nome, Alaska, and 41 days in Russia.
On her return to Belgium, the former pupil of St Swithun's School, Winchester, was greeted by her family, journalists and well-wishers.
She was accompanied in her landing by four planes from the Belgian Red Devils aerobatic display team.
The circumnavigation included more than 60 stops across five continents, and began on 18 August.
