Ghazal Legend Bhupinder Singh

  • Renowned ghazal singer Bhupinder Singh, known for crooning classics like "Naam Gum Jayega" and "Dil Dhoondta Hai", passed away in Mumbai. He was 82.
  • During his decades-long journey in the film industry, the singer came to be best known for songs like "Do Diwane Shehar Mein", "Ek Akela is Shehar Mein", "Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Aasman", "Duniya Chhute Yaar Na Chhute" and "Karoge Yaad Toh", among others.
  • In his five-decade-long career, Bhupinder Singh had worked with the biggest names of the music industry, from Mohammed Rafi, R.D. Burman, Madan Mohan, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Gulzar to Bappi Lahiri, among others.

Renowned Artist Achuthan Kudallur Passes Away

  • Achuthan Kudallur, an artist who believed that colours have a language of their own and experimented with their myriad forms in his abstract narratives, passed away. He was 77.
  • A recipient of several awards, including the National Academy Award and Tamil Nadu Lalit Kala Akademi Award, his journey as an artist began in Kudallur in Palakkad district in Kerala, where he was born in 1945.

Former Punjab Speaker, SAD Leader Nirmal Singh Kahlon Passes Away

  • Former Punjab Speaker and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Nirmal Singh Kahlon passed away. He was 79.
  • He was the Rural Development and Panchayat Minister from 1997 to 2002 and the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly from 2007 to 2012.

Renowned Archaeologist Padma Shri Enamul Haque Passes Away

  • Prof. Dr. Enamul Haque, a well-known archaeologist, historian, expert in art, and former director general of the Bangladesh National Museum, passed away at his residence in Dhaka. He was 85. He served as the National Museum's director general from September 28, 1983, to February 6, 1991. He received the Ekushey Padak in 2016, the Swadhinata Padak in 2020, and the Indian Padma Shri award in honour of his contributions.
  • Enamul Haque was a Bangladeshi museologist who lived from 1 March 1937 to 10 July 2022.The Government of Bangladesh presented him with the Ekushey Padak in 2014 and the Independence Day Award in 2017.
  • In 2020, the Indian government also gave Haque the Padma Shri award, the fourth-highest civilian honour in the country, in recognition of his outstanding work in the fields of archaeology and museology.

Former Mexican President Luis Echeverria Passes Away

  • Luis Echeverria Alvarez, the former President of Mexico who served from 1970 to 1976, died at the age of 100.
  • Echeverria, a career lawyer and member of Mexico's Institutional Revolutionary Party, made Mexico's international relations a priority and was known, among other things, for promoting the Charter of Economic Rights and Duties of States at the United Nations in 1972.
  • He also initiated the establishment of diplomatic relations with China in February 1972.

India's Pallavi Singh Bags the Mrs. Universe Divine Crown in South Korea

  • Pallavi Singh, from India, bagged the Mrs Universe Divine Title at the finals held at Yeosu City, South Korea. Pallavi Singh hails from Kanpur. She made India proud in this contest that saw participation from 110 countries. This is indeed a proud moment for India. Pallavi Singh was the only contestant from Asia in the Mrs Universe contest. She has demonstrated the strong will and commitment of Indian women to excel in all walks of life.
  • Pallavi Singh won the title of Mrs India held in Jaipur in 2020. She then won the title of Mrs Indo-Asia Universe in the Asia-level competition held in Delhi in October 2021.

Noted Social Worker Avdhash Kaushal Passes Away

  • Noted social worker and Padma Shri awardee Avdhash Kaushal passed away. He was 87.
  • Kaushal founded the NGO, Rural Litigation and Entitlement Kendra (RLEK), in the late 1970s for development work among tribal hill communities in the area of Jaunsar-Bawar, a predominantly tribal belt of Dehradun district.
  • Over the years, he led RLEK's work on various initiatives including protecting the fragile eco-system of Doon Valley, abolition of the bonded labour system in Jaunsar-Bawar area of Dehradun and securing the rights (right to education, right to vote and livelihood rights) of marginalised communities.
  • One of the NGO's major victories was in the limestone quarries case it fought in the 1980s. In its the final judgment in the case, the Supreme Court had ordered the closing of the 101 mines in the Doon Valley.
  • In 2003, Kaushal was invited by the United Nations to the World Summit in Geneva, to chair the panel on a discussion on the importance of local content within information and communication technology. Kaushal was also nominated as a member of the international committee to probe into war crimes and disappearances in Sri Lanka in the aftermath of the civil war in that country.
