Rajnath Singh Inaugurates HAL's Regional Office in Malaysia

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the regional office of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in Kuala Lumpur to facilitate close defence industrial collaboration between India and Malaysia.
  • It will also serve as a hub for the HAL's engagement with the wider South-East Asian region and act as a window for other Indian defence PSUs.

IIT Kanpur Develops AI-enabled Suicide Drones

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur, developed an indigenous version of the Kamikaze drone (a type of suicide drone). The suicide drone can carry a warhead of up to 6 kg for up to 100 km.
  • Speaking about the development of the drone, Subramaniam Sadrala, Assistant Professor in the Aerospace Department of IIT Kanpur, said that the drones are equipped with stalled technology which enables them to escape radar identification.
  • The development of the drone has been going on since 2022 under DRDO's Young Scientist Laboratory (DYSL-CT) project.
  • The indigenously developed drones are capable of neutralising enemy targets even in the absence of Global Positioning Support (GPS) with the help of artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled visual guidance system in the enemy territory.

Anil Chauhan Inaugurates LRMR Hangar at Naval Air Station

  • Chief of Defense Staff (CDS), General Anil Chauhan, inaugurated the LRMR Hangar & Dispersal at Naval Air Station, INS Utkrosh in Port Blair. The newly added hangar facility, covering an area of 6000 sq. mt., is capable of accommodating a combination of P8I aircraft with Dronier & Advanced Light Helicopters. This inauguration marked significant milestones in enhancing jointness and integration among the armed forces in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
  • General Anil Chauhan also inaugurated the Wet Basin & Refit Jetty at the Naval Ship Repair Yard in Port Blair. This jetty, developed in consultation with IIT Chennai and costing over 360 Cr, will provide essential support for strategic reach and sea operations of India's first Joint Theatre Command in the region.

United States Has World's most Powerful Military

  • The United States has the strongest military force in the world, with Russia and China in second and third and India in fourth place, according to Global Firepower, a data website that tracks global defence-related information.
  • The 2023 Military Strength list - which also included the nations with the weakest military force in the world, which included Bhutan and Iceland - assessed over 60 factors.
  • Global Firepower said that it established 'a given nation's score with categories ranging from quantity of military units and financial standing to logistical capabilities and geography.
  • The 10 nations with most powerful militaries in the world are United States, Russia, China, India, United Kingdom, South Korea, Pakistan, Japan, France and Italy.
  • The 10 nations with least powerful militaries in the world are Bhutan, Benin, Moldova, Somalia, Liberia, Suriname, Belize, Central African Republic, Iceland and Sierra Leone.

L&T, Navantia Sign Teaming Deal for Project 75(I) Submarines

  • A month after German submarine builder ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems signed an agreement with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders to build six submarines for the Indian Navy, a competing partnership was announced by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Spain's Navantia.
  • Project 75(I) requires the Indian bidder to tie up a technology partnership with a foreign collaborator and build six conventional submarines equipped with air-independent propulsion (AIP).
  • This contract, valued at over €4.8 billion (Rs. 43,500 crore), will be amongst India's largest defence acquisition projects. The building of six AIP submarines will be followed by a 30-year lifecycle sustenance contract of similar value.
  • Project 75(I) is amongst the first programmes to be processed under the strategic partnership acquisition model of the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

India, Japan Navies 6-Day War-game Off Visakhapatnam Concludes

  • The Indian and Japanese navies concluded a six-day war-game off Visakhapatnam to further expand their overall military cooperation. The Indian Navy hosted the seventh edition of the Japan-India Maritime Exercise (JIMEX) and this edition marked the 11th anniversary of war-game since its inception in 2012.
  • The Indian Navy deployed India's first indigenously built guided missile destroyer INS Delhi, indigenously built anti-submarine warfare corvette INS Kamorta, fleet tanker INS Shakti, a submarine, maritime patrol aircraft P8I and ship-borne helicopters and fighter aircraft for the exercise. The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) was represented by the guided missile destroyer JS Samidare and its integral helicopters.
  • The exercise was conducted over six days in two phases — a harbour phase that was followed by war fighting skills at sea.
  • The JIMEX 23 provides an opportunity to learn from each other's best practices and facilitates operational interactions between Indian Navy and JMSDF to foster mutual cooperation and reaffirm their shared commitment towards maritime security in the region.

India Gains Major Attention from Korean Defense Contractors

  • As per reports, Hanwha Aerospace plans to participate in the Indian Army's Future Infantry Combat Vehicle (FICV) Project. The FICV Project aims to replace the Indian Army's 2,600 aging Soviet-made BMP-1 and BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs).
  • Hanwha Aerospace will partner with Indian defence contractor Larsen & Toubro (L&T) in producing the Redback. The Korean defence contractor also collaborated with L&T on the export of K9 self-propelled howitzers in 2017. With technical support from Hanwha, L&T locally produced K9 Bajiras, an Indian version of the K9 self-propelled howitzer, and supplied them to the Indian Army.
  • On top of that, Hanwha Aerospace will also participate in the Indian Army's light tank program with K21-105 light tanks. K21-105 light tanks are based on the body of the army's K21 infantry fighting vehicle and have turrets made by Belgium's John Cockerill Defence. The tank's 105 mm main gun has a maximum range of 4 kilometres and can fire not only smart shells but anti-tank missiles.

  • Indian Naval Air Squadron 324 (INAS 324) at INS Dega in Visakhapatnam celebrated its maiden anniversary.
  • The Indian Naval Air Squadron 324 is equipped with indigenous ALH Mk III helicopters.
  • It embodies the spirit of Aatma Nirbhar Bharat. Their deployment significantly enhances maritime surveillance capability and strengthens coastal security along the east coast.
  • The crew upholds their motto "Nidruvith Dhrud Veeryvath" - "Faithful, Tenacious, Fearless".

Lt Gen MU Nair Takes Over as India's Top Cyber Security Chief

  • Lt Gen MU Nair was appointed the new National Cyber Security Coordinator (NCSC) replacing Lt Gen (retd.) Rajesh Pant. Lt Gen Nair previously held the chair of Signal-officer-in-Chief at the Army Headquarters.
  • He is India's third cyber security chief after Lt Gen (retd.) Rajesh Pant and first chief Gulshan Rai.
  • Lt Gen MU Nair is an alumnus of the prestigious National Defence Academy.
  • He has also held other important positions including the additional director general, signal intelligence, chief of staff of a corps and command.
  • Nair has rich expertise in cyber warfare, signal intelligence and communication & information technology at the domestic and global levels.
  • National Cyber Coordination Centre (NCCC) works under National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) and coordinates with different agencies at the national level in cyber security-related matters.
