AIPA Organise Third National Ranking Pickleball Tournament in Margao

The third National Ranking Pickleball Tournament will be organised by the All India Pickleball Association (AIPA) from May 19 to 21.
AIPA will conduct the tournament in association with the Goa Pickleball Association and Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Goa.
The competition will be held at the Fatorda Stadium, Goa. The previous two editions were held at Pune in 2019 and at Dombivli, near Mumbai in 2021.
The three-day tournament will witness over 250 participants from 16 states. The players can choose to compete from 16 different categories like Under-14 and Under-19 men's, women's open, 35 plus men, 35 plus women, 50 plus men, and 50 plus women apart from mixed doubles.

Yashasvi Jaiswal Slams Fastest Fifty in IPL's History

Rajasthan Royals (RR) opener Yashasvi Jaiswal created history against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and became the quickest batsman to score a half-century in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The left-handed batsman breached the 50-run mark in only 13 balls. Jaiswal broke K. L. Rahul's record of the fastest fifty in IPL. K. L. Rahul had scored the fastest fifty in 14 balls.
K. L. Rahul and Pat Cummins are in the second position, having used only 14 balls to reach 50 runs. Until 2018, the record was jointly held by Yusuf Pathan and Sunil Narine who both scored 50 runs off 15 balls. Nicholas Pooran is in sixth place, also scoring a half century in 15 deliveries.

Mastercard Takes Over as ICC's Global Sponsor, Replacing BharatPe

Mastercard took over from BharatPe as the global sponsor of the International Cricket Council (ICC), a multinational financial services corporation based in the United States. Over the past year, Mastercard was actively seeking to secure lucrative sponsorship deals and has already secured the title sponsorship rights for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) international and domestic home fixtures from Paytm.
This multi-year agreement will provide Mastercard with prominent on-screen and in-venue branding opportunities, such as having their logo displayed in 3D on the field and on LED advertising boards near the boundary rope. Additionally, Mastercard will have the chance to create exclusive experiences for its customers during the upcoming ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2023 in India.

India Name 18-member Team for Women's Junior Asia Cup Hockey Tournament

India named an 18-member team for the prestigious Women's Junior Asia Cup hockey tournament, which begins in Kakamigahara, Japan on June 2.
India will play against Korea, Malaysia, Chinese Taipei and Uzbekistan in Pool A, while Pool B consists of hosts Japan, China, Kazakhstan, Hong Kong China and Indonesia.
The Junior Asia Cup is a crucial event for India as the top-three nations from the tournament will qualify for this year's FIH Junior Women's Hockey World Cup.
India will be led by Preeti, while Deepika was named the vice-captain.

Shooting World Cup: Rhythm Sangwan Gets India off the Mark at WC

Rhythm Sangwan staged a fantastic comeback at the back end of the women's 10 m air pistol final to clinch bronze at the ISSF World Cup Rifle/Pistol in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Rhythm finished behind two former Olympics champions, gold medal winner Anna Korakaki of Greece and silver medallist Olena Kostevych of Ukraine.
Rhythm's effort warmed the Indian hearts after Sarabjot Singh and Esha Singh both missed out on medals despite qualifying for the finals in the men's and women's 10m air pistol, respectively.

Andy Murray Wins Victory over Tommy Paul in Aix-en-Provence

Andy Murray, a Scottish tennis player, won his first tournament since 2019 by defeating Tommy Paul, the world No. 17, 2-6 6-1 6-2 in the final of the ATP Challenger event in Aix-en-Provence. This victory not only marked his first title since Antwerp in 2019 but also his first clay court title since the Rome Masters 1000 in 2016, which boosts his world ranking to No. 42, the highest in five years. Despite struggling with form and consistency, Murray managed to defeat three top-20 players this year (2023), and he aims to continue his winning streak as he prepares for the upcoming French Open, which will start on May 22.

Messi Wins Top Laureus Award

Lionel Messi won a top accolade as world Sportsman of the Year and picked up another award as a member of the team of the year following Argentina's FIFA World Cup victory in 2022.
Jamaican sprinter Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce finally won the Sportswoman of the Year award on her sixth nomination. Fraser-Pryce's 2022 exploits included winning the 100 metres gold at the World Athletics Championships for the fifth time.
The Laureus Sports Awards honouring eight winners were held in Paris for the first time since 2020.
It was Messi's second individual title after sharing that honour with Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton in 2020.
Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz's victory at the 2022 US Open and his rise to the No. 1 ranking saw him take the Breakthrough of the Year award. Alcaraz, who celebrated his 20th birthday last week, won Sunday's final of the Madrid Open.

Badminton Asia Appoints Omar Rashid as Chair of Technical Officials Committee

Badminton Asia appointed Omar Rashid, the Joint Secretary of the Badminton Association of India (BAI), as the Chair of the Technical Officials Committee. Rashid's vast experience in his previous role with BAI makes him a valuable addition to the committee, ensuring further advancement of badminton in India.
As the Chair of the Technical Officials Committee, Rashid will oversee the development and implementation of rules and regulations that will elevate the standards of officiating in badminton tournaments nationwide. The committee is responsible for ensuring that tournaments are conducted fairly, and the rules are upheld to the highest standards. Rashid will work closely with the technical officials of the region to enhance the sport of badminton.
Apart from his role as Joint Secretary of BAI and Chair of the Technical Officials Committee of Badminton Asia, Rashid is also the General Secretary of the Assam Badminton Association. His contribution to the development of badminton in Assam and the Northeastern region of India has been significant. Rashid's appointment is expected to benefit badminton in the region and bring further attention to the sport's growth and development.

TNCA Launches Talent Scout Program for Women

The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association launched a Talent Scout Program for women to unearth new talents. The Talent Scout Wing (TSW) which will comprise of former men and women first-class cricketers and coaches will help in identifying the talent across the state in the trials scheduled to begin from May 13.
For the program, the TNCA has formed four groups of four members each who will cover all the 37 districts in Tamil Nadu. Once the TSW shortlists the talent pool, they will be assembled for training camps that will happen across the year, said Sudha Shah, who is the chairman of Cricket Advisory Committee.

Tamil Nadu Champions Foundation Launched for Sports Development in the State

The Tamil Nadu Champions Foundation (TNCF) was officially launched, and the Chief Minister's Trophy 2023 logo, mascot, and theme song were unveiled at The Leela Palace.
Tamil Nadu (TN) Chief Minister M. K. Stalin was the chief guest. TN Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Development Udhayanidhi Stalin also presided over. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was the guest of honour.
The CM's Trophy logo is the tamil word 'Tamil Nadu' with embedded illustrations of persons playing various sports and chess horse. It comes with the slogan 'Kalam Namathae! (The field is ours!)'. The mascot is the humanoid Nilgiri Tahr 'Veeran.'

Aryna Sabalenka Edges Out Iga Swiatek

Aryna Sabalenka beat world No. 1 Iga Swiatek to win the Madrid Open in the pair's second clash in a final this year (2023), with the Belarusian saying she hopes their burgeoning rivalry will continue to enthral tennis fans throughout the season.
The world No. 2 had lost all three previous meetings with Swiatek on clay, including a defeat in last month's (April) Stuttgart final, but produced an aggressive performance to win 6-3 3-6 6-3 and establish herself as a serious contender at the upcoming French Open.

ACC Decides to Move Asia Cup out of Pakistan

In a huge setback to Pakistan, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) decided to move the Asia Cup out of the country after PCB's proposal to host the tournament on a 'hybrid model' was rejected by the member nations.
Sri Lanka emerged as a front runner to host the six-nation tournament as extremely humid conditions in the UAE in the month of September could lead to injuries to players.
It will be interesting to see if Pakistan, after this snub, competes in the tournament, scheduled to be held from September 2-17.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) was forced to propose an alternative after BCCI refused to send the Indian team to the neighbouring nation due to diplomatic tension between the two countries.
PCB had proposed that India play their games in the UAE while Pakistan host their matches on home soil.

Spain's Carlos Alcaraz Wins Madrid Open 2023

World number two Carlos Alcaraz continued his good work from the Barcelona Open and successfully defended his title at Madrid. Alcaraz beat lucky loser Jan-Lennard Struff 6-4 3-6 6-3 and won his fourth ATP Tour trophy of the year and his tenth overall.
The victory was the fourth ATP Masters 1000 trophy for Alcaraz, who became the youngest world number one in September 2022 when he won the US Open and held that spot for 20 weeks until Novak Djokovic took it back in January 2023.

Jeremy Wins Silver in Snatch but Fails to Complete His Event

Indian weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga won a silver medal in snatch but could not get an overall total as he failed to lift the weight in any of his three clean and jerk attempts in a disappointing show at the Asian Championships held in Jinju, South Korea.
Competing in his first tournament since the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Jeremy was the only one in the 12-lifter field who did not finish his event.

Mark Nicholas Set to Become the Next President of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC)

Mark Nicholas, a former England cricketer and well-known commentator, was chosen as the next president of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). He will take over from the current president, Stephen Fry, and begin his duties in October 2023. The announcement of his appointment was made during the MCC's Annual General Meeting.
Mark Nicholas, who became a Member of the MCC in 1981, is a well-known figure in televised cricket coverage worldwide. He has had a successful professional cricket career that spanned over two decades, during which he scored more than 25,000 runs and took 173 wickets.
The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) is a cricket club based in London, England. It was founded in 1787 and is considered to be one of the most prestigious cricket clubs in the world. The MCC is responsible for the laws of cricket, and also owns and operates Lord's Cricket Ground, which is widely regarded as the "Home of Cricket". The club has a long and rich history in the sport, and has been instrumental in shaping the development of cricket both in England and around the world.

Delhi HC Appoints Former Karnataka HC Judge as Basketball Federation of India Administrator

Former judge of the Karnataka High Court, P. Krishna Bhat, was appointed by the Delhi High Court as the administrator of the Basketball Federation of India (BFI) to conduct elections in the organization. The appointment is effective immediately, and the administrator will continue to function until a newly-elected body takes charge of BFI. The court instructed the administrator to ensure that the election process is concluded as soon as possible according to the Sports Code. This decision was made in response to several petitions regarding the election of office bearers and executive committee members for the term 2023-2027.
The Basketball Federation of India (BFI) is the governing and controlling body of basketball in India. It is responsible for the development and promotion of the sports authority of India at all levels. BFI manages all the national-level basketball operations in India and sports authority of India is also undertaking basketball federation of India.
BFI, was formed in 1950. Poonam Mahajan was the president (and also the first female president) of Basketball Federation of India. The Basketball Federation of India has its headquarter in New Delhi.

Babar Azam Becomes Fastest to 5,000 ODI Runs

Babar Azam, the captain of the Pakistan cricket team, set a new record by becoming the fastest player to score 5000 runs in One Day International (ODI) cricket. He achieved this feat in 97 innings, breaking the previous record set by South Africa's Hashim Amla, who reached the 5000 run mark in 101 innings. Babar accomplished this milestone during the fourth match against New Zealand in Karachi.
Hashim Amla now holds the second position in the list of batters who reached 5000 runs in the fewest innings in One Day International (ODI) cricket. Viv Richards, Virat Kohli, and David Warner follow Amla in the list, having achieved the milestone in 114, 114, and 115 innings respectively.

Neeraj Chopra Wins 2023 Doha Diamond League

Neeraj Chopra won the Doha leg of the Diamond League with a throw of 88.67 m to mark his return to competition in 2023.
He won by a very small margin as Czech Republic's Jakub Vadlejch finished second with a throw of 88.63 m, just four centimetres short of Chopra's mark. World Champion Andersen Peters finished third with a best throw of 85.88 m.

Sable, Parul, Chithravel Set National Records

Triple jumper Praveen Chithravel shattered the national record and breached the 2023 World Athletics Championships qualifying standard in Cuba while Avinash Sable and Parul Chaudhary set men's and women's 5000 m national marks in a track event in USA.
Chithravel jumped 17.37 m to finish on top of podium at the V. Prueba de Confrontacion 2023 competition in Havana, Cuba, a World Athletics category F event, to better the earlier national record of 17.30 m set by Renjith Maheswary in 2016.
Sable and Chaudhary, both 28, bettered the old men's and women's 5000 m national records at the Sound Running Track Festival, a World Athletics Continental Tour silver level event, in Los Angeles in USA.
Sable bettered his own earlier national record of 13:25:65 by clocking 13:19.30 as he finished 12th in the race, while Chaudhary broke the earlier national mark of 15:15.89 which had remained for 13 years in the name of Preeja Sreedharan by clocking 15:10:35 for a ninth-place finish.

Olympic Silver Medallist Nijel Amos Gets 3-year Ban

According to the Athletics Integrity Unit, Nijel Amos, who won a silver medal in the men's 800 m at the 2012 Olympics, was given a three-year ban for doping. Amos, who hails from Botswana, tested positive for the banned substance GW1516 in the lead-up to last year's (2022) track world championships. However, he received a reduction on the standard four-year ban for admitting to the charges. Unfortunately, this means that Amos will not be able to participate in the Paris Olympics next year (2024) due to the ban.
Nijel Amos was provisionally suspended pending an investigation in July 2022, and his three-year ban for doping has been backdated to that date. Therefore, the ban will continue until 2025.
