Praggnanandhaa Wins Super GM Chess Tourney in Hungary

  • Young Indian Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa emerged champion in the V Geza Hetenyi Memorial Super GM chess tournament 2023, in Hungary.
  • Praggnanandhaa scored 6.5 points to finish clear first in the 10-player event. After nine rounds of play, he ended up a point ahead of M. Amin Tabatabaei (Iran) and Russia's Sanan Sjugirov.
  • Praggnanandhaa posted five wins, drew three games and suffered only one defeat in the tournament, at the hands of Amin Tabatabaei in the fifth round.

Indian Team Wins Bronze Medal at Asian Surfing Championship 2023

  • The Indian surf team, which participated for the first time, in the Asian championship bagged the bronze medal. The icing on the cake was two Tamil Nadu youths breaking into the top 10 Asian rankings. The Asian Surfing Championship was held at Thulusdhoo Island in Maldives, which saw participation from 18 countries. The Surfing Federation of India had sent four senior surfers in the men's category and two surfers in the under-18 category. Five out of the six surfers were from Tamil Nadu.

Junior Shooting Worlds: Silver for Indian Skeet Mixed Team

  • The Indian pair of Harmehar Singh Lally and Sanjana Sood bagged a silver medal in the skeet mixed team event of the ISSF Junior World Championships in Changwon, South Korea.
  • Harmehar and Sanjana had to endure a gruelling 52-shot shoot-off, which they won 26-24, en route the final in which they lost 38-43 to the Italian duo of Andrea Galardini and Sara Bongini.
  • The Indians shot a combined 140 out of 150 in the qualification but found themselves tied for the second place with the American pair of Benjamin Keller and Jessi Griffin. The Italians had topped the 16-team field with a score of 141.

HC Issues Notice to Centre, IOA after Petition by Boxers

  • Three boxers, including Amit Panghal, and a sports activist approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court, questioning the selection process for the Asian Games, to be held later this year.
  • International boxers Panghal, Rohit Mor and Sagar, and Haryana-based sports activist Jaipal Dhankhar challenged the evaluation-based selection process by filing two writ petitions before the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
  • The High Court issued notices to the Sports Ministry, Indian Olympic Association (IOA), Sports Authority of India (SAI) and Boxing Federation of India (BFI). Judge Vinod S. Bhardwaj adjourned the case till July 24.
  • The petitioners alleged that the BFI had changed the selection criteria for the national camps, World Championships and Asian Games in violation of the National Sports Development Code of India (NSCI)-2011 and the official selection policy.

DD Sports Secures Television Rights for FIFA Women's World Cup 2023

  • DD Sports partnered with 1Stadia to broadcast the highly anticipated 9th edition of the FIFA Women's World Cup.
  • The tournament, started on July 20, 2023, marking the inaugural occasion when the World Cup is co-hosted by two countries, namely Australia and New Zealand.
  • 1Stadia granted streaming platform FanCode the sub-licensing rights for streaming the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023, while public broadcaster DD Sports was entrusted with the sub-licensing rights for television broadcasting.
  • 1Stadia, a US-based company specializing in technological advancements in the sports and media rights industries, has secured an exclusive broadcasting rights agreement for FIFA tournaments in the Indian subcontinent.
  • This agreement covers nations such as India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan, granting 1Stadia the sole authority to broadcast these tournaments in the region.

Badminton: Satwiksairaj Smashes Guinness World Record with Fastest Hits during Korea Open

  • Indian badminton player Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, popularly known as Satwik, smashed the Guinness World Record for the fastest hit by a male player in the sport during the Korea Open, where Satwik recorded a mind-boggling speed of 565 km/h with his smash.
  • This record-breaking smash has not only put Satwik on the global map but also broken a decade-long record previously held by Malaysian player Tan Boon Heong. In May 2013, Heong set the record with a smash speed of 493 km/h.
  • The record-breaking smash was conducted in a controlled environment at the Yonex factory gymnasium in Soka, Saitama, Japan. The speed measurement results were verified by official judges from the Guinness World Records, confirming Satwik's place in history.

Ajeet Singh Clinches Gold Medal in Para Athletics Championships in Paris

  • The Charlety Stadium in Paris hosted the Para Athletics World Championships from 8 to 17 July, attracting a diverse participation of more than 1200 athletes from 107 nations. Ajeet Singh displayed his exceptional prowess in the finals of the men's javelin throw F46 category, emerging as the champion and claiming the gold medal. With a remarkable throw measuring 65.41 metres, he secured the top spot in the competition. Ajeet Singh's outstanding performance not only earned him the championship title but also resulted in the breaking of the previous record held by Chunliang Guo of China, whose throw measured 61.89 metres.
  • India concluded its participation in the 2023 World Para Athletics Championships held in Paris with an exceptional achievement, breaking records and securing an impressive medal count. They garnered three gold medals, four silver medals, and three bronze medals, setting a new benchmark.

Ruturaj to Lead India Men's Cricket Team at the 19th Asian Games

  • The BCCI announced both the men's and the women's team which will take part in the upcoming Hangzhou Asian Games, scheduled to start from September 23 and end on October 8. The women's cricket competition will take place from September 19-28 while the men's competition will start from September 28-October 8. Both the competitions will be played in T20 formats.
  • The men's team will be captained by Ruturaj Gaikwad and boasts the talents of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rahul Tripathi, Tilak Varma and Rinku Singh among others. The likes of Yash Thakur, Sai Kishore, Venkatesh Iyer, Deepak Hooda and Sai Sudharsan are standbys.
  • Meanwhile, the women's team will be led by captain Harmanpreet Kaur with Smriti Mandhana as her deputy. Harleen Deol, Kashvee Gautam, Sneh Rana, Saika Ishaque and Pooja Vastrakar are in the standby list.

Australia's Victoria Withdraws as Host of 2026 Commonwealth Games

  • Australia's state of Victoria will not host the 2026 Commonwealth Games due to projected cost overruns, placing the future of the quadrennial multi-sport gathering in doubt.
  • Victoria state Premier Dan Andrews said that the cost of the Games, which were to have been held in four regional hubs, could blow out to more than A$7 billion ($4.8 billion) from a budgeted A$2.6 billion if they went ahead.
  • Victoria had already informed the global governing body Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) in amicable meetings but the cost of breaking the 2026 contract was yet to be decided.
  • The CGF and local governing body Commonwealth Games Australia did not provide immediate comment.
  • The sporting event for mostly former British colonies has struggled to remain relevant, with four of the last five editions held in Australia or Britain.

ISSF Junior World Championship: Abhinav-Gautami Bag Gold Medal

  • The Indian duo of Abhinav Shaw and Gautami Bhanot clinched the gold medal by beating their French opponents Oceanne Muller and Romain Aufrere in the 10m air rifle mixed team event at ISSF World Championship Juniors in Changwon, Korea.
  • In the thrilling gold medal match, the pair displayed skill and teamwork to remain on top as they beat their opponents 17-13.
