IIT Madras Unveils World's Most Detailed 3D Images of Foetal Brain

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) achieved a groundbreaking milestone by releasing the most detailed high-resolution 3D images of the human fetal brain. Developed by researchers at the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre, this pioneering project is the first of its kind globally, showcasing over 5,132 digitally captured brain sections at a cellular level using advanced brain mapping technology.
  • The dataset, aptly named DHARANI, is now openly accessible to researchers worldwide through the platform brainportal.humanbrain.in. This initiative significantly advances neuroscience, promising breakthroughs in understanding brain development and treating disorders like learning disabilities and autism.

QS Sustainability Rankings 2025: IIT Delhi Tops India

  • The QS World University Rankings Sustainability 2025 were released and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi emerged as the top-ranked Indian institution. Globally, IIT Delhi holds the 171st position and achieved an impressive 81.1 percentile in the Environmental Sustainability category.
  • IIT Delhi is followed by IIT Kharagpur, ranked 202nd globally, and IIT Bombay, which holds the 234th position.
  • The University of Toronto topped the global QS Sustainability Rankings 2025, excelling in Environmental Sustainability (91 points) and Environmental Research (98.5 points).
  • It is followed by ETH Zurich, with Lund University and the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) tied for third.

Merriam-Webster Names 'Polarization' its 2024 Word of the Year

  • Merriam-Webster's word of the year is one that the dictionary suggests unifies both sides of the aisle.
  • The dictionary publisher said that 'polarization' is its 2024 word of the year, defining it as division into two sharply distinct opposites; especially, a state in which the opinions, beliefs, or interests of a group or society no longer range along a continuum but become concentrated at opposing extremes.

Central School Push: 85 New Kendriya Vidyalayas, 13 in J&K; 28 Navodayas, N-E focus

  • The Union Cabinet approved Rs. 8,231 crore for what may be the largest expansion of central schools in a decade, sanctioning 85 new Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) and 28 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs). The Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir will receive the highest number of new KVs (13), while Arunachal Pradesh will get the most JNVs (8).
  • KVs are intended for children of central government and defence employees. JNVs, on the other hand, are residential schools (from Class VI to XII) established in rural districts to nurture talented students from rural areas.
  • Currently, apart from those newly approved by the Union Cabinet, there are 1,256 functional KVs and 653 functional JNVs.
  • The 85 new central schools will be established over a period of eight years starting from 2025-26, while the 28 JNVs will be set up over five years from 2024-25 to 2028-29.

Six Central Universities to Offer Admissions Twice a Year

  • Six central universities in India decided to offer admissions twice a year, as announced by the Union Ministry of Education. The policy, approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC), aims to provide students with more opportunities to enrol in higher education institutions (HEIs).
  • The universities implementing this change are: Central University of Kerala, Central University of Punjab, Central University of Rajasthan, University of Hyderabad, Tezpur University and Nagaland University.
  • UGC made this biannual admissions policy optional for HEIs, emphasising that institutions should adopt it based on their readiness.

PM e-VIDYA DTH Channel for Indian Sign Language

  • Union Minister for Education, Dharmendra Pradhan, launched the PM e-VIDYA DTH Channel No. 31 for Indian Sign Language (ISL) in New Delhi. Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Minister of State for Education, Jayant Chaudhary also graced the event. The programme witnessed participation from Hearing Impaired (HI) children, HI achievers, special educators, ISL certified interpreters and organisations working for mainstreaming the Hearing-Impaired community.
  • This critical initiative supports the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 which recommends promotion of Indian Sign Language to foster a more inclusive educational environment.

Dharmendra Pradhan Inaugurates ICSSR Research Internship Programme in Social and Human Sciences

  • Union Minister for Education, Dharmendra Pradhan, inaugurated the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) Research Internship Programme in Social and Human Sciences in New Delhi. He also distributed appointment letters to the ICSSR Research Interns. Pradhan also distributed prizes to the winners of the National Argumentative Essay Writing Competition on "Simultaneous Elections in India: One Nation, One Election" to the UG, PG and Doctoral Students. Prof. Dhananjay Singh, Member Secretary, ICSSR; Prof. Deepak K. Srivastava, Chairman, ICSSR; academicians, Heads of Institutes, scholars and students were also present at the event.

UK's Coventry University Group Launches New India Hub to Boost Partnerships

  • Coventry University Group launched a new India Hub in New Delhi to strengthen partnerships and enrich deeper connections between India and the UK. The hub is designed to support the university's efforts in admissions, recruitment, and collaboration across India and the surrounding region.
  • To mark the launch, a special event was held at the British Council, attended by senior university leaders, including Vice-Chancellor and Group CEO Professor John Latham CBE, along with Indian and UK government officials.

CBSE to Hold Special Exams for Student Athletes, Olympiad Participants in 2025

  • The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will conduct special exams in 2025 for students participating in national and international sports events, including recognised Olympiads. This initiative, started in 2018, aims to support students in balancing academics and extracurricular excellence.
  • Students whose CBSE board exam dates overlap with sports events recognised by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) or the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) can benefit from this provision. It also covers journey dates required for these events.
