Marina Tabassum Becomes First South Asian to Win Lisbon Triennale Millennium bcp Lifetime Achieve...

  • Renowned Bangladeshi architect, researcher and educator Marina Tabassum became the first person from the global south and first south Asian to win the prestigious Lisbon Triennale Millennium bcp Lifetime Achievement Award. Announcing the award, the Lisbon Architecture Triennale jury praised Marina Tabassum for presenting an inspiring example of work with local communities that can have a positive impact across the globe even under the most adverse conditions.
  • The International Jury for the award said that Marina Tabssum's unique practice touches on the spiritual fundamentals of architecture. Driven by specific cultural and geographical context, her works address pressing contemporary issues, said the jury in their citation for the award. Her work shows how architects can challenge the climate crisis and bring about social change in an experimental, respectful and inspiring manner.
  • She will receive an original artwork by the Portuguese artist and sculptor Carlos Nogueira as award during the Lisbon Triennale which begins on 29 September in Lisbon, Portugal.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor to Receive France's Highest Civilian Honour

  • Congress MP and wordsmith Shashi Tharoor received France's highest civilian honour, the Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur (the Legion of Honour), for his writings and speeches.
  • The French order of merit that was established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte is awarded for excellent civil or military conduct.
  • In 2010, Tharoor had received a similar honour from the Spanish government, when the King of Spain had bestowed upon him the Encomienda de la Real Order Espanola de Carlos III.
  • Shashi Tharoor is a two-term Lok Sabha MP representing the Thiruvananthapuram constituency and Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs. He has previously served as Minister of State for Human Resource Development and Minister of State for External Affairs in the erstwhile UPA government.

151 police Personnel Awarded Excellence in Investigation Medal by Home Ministry

  • The Union Home Minister's Medal for Excellence in Investigation award for 2022 was awarded to 151 police personnel across various states and union territories and governmental agencies.
  • Twenty-eight women out of the total awardees received the medal.
  • Amongst the 151 awards, 15 were conferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), 11 to the Maharashtra Police, 10 each to Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh Police, and eight each to Kerala Police, Rajasthan Police and West Bengal Police.
  • The remaining were awarded to the other states and union territories. Also, five awards medals were conferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) personnel.

Ramadhar Becomes First Indian Psychologist on US Heritage Wall of Fame

  • In a first, the extraordinary contributions to social psychology and management by an Indian professor were recognised by the Society for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP) in the United States. Amrut Mody School of Management of Ahmedabad University professor Ramadhar Singh was marked on the 'Heritage Wall of Fame' of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP) in the United States, making him the only social psychologist from India to receive the honour. It is worth noting that SPSP, established in 1974, is the world's largest organisation of personality and social psychologists and the professor Singh has been a member of the Society (1990) and then fellow (1992).
  • This recognition comes close on the heels of the College of Health and Human Sciences, Purdue University, conferring him with the Distinguished Alumni Award in Psychological Sciences on March 25, 2022.

Puneeth Rajkumar to be Conferred Karnataka Ratna Posthumously

  • Karnataka Chief Minister, Basavaraj Bommai announced that Kannada film star Puneeth Rajkumar, who died last year, will be conferred with the 'Karnataka Ratna' award posthumously. On November 1, which happens to be Kannada Rajyotsava, the state's formation day. He will be the 10th recipient of the state's highest civilian honour.
  • Considered the Kannada cinema's reigning star, Puneeth, the youngest of five children of Kannada matinee idol Dr Rajkumar, died of a cardiac arrest on October 29 at the age of 46. Interestingly, Puneeth's late father Rajkumar is among the first recipients of the Karnataka Ratna award in 1992, along with poet Kuvempu.
  • The Karnataka Ratna was last awarded to Dr Virendra Heggade for social service in 2009. Other recipients of the award are S Nijalingappa (Politics), CNR Rao (Science), Dr. Devi Prasad Shetty (Medical), Bhimsen Joshi (Music), Shivakumara Swamiji (Social Service), and Dr J Javaregowda (Education & Literature).

Dalai Lama Honoured with Ladakh's Highest Civilian Award dPal rNgam Duston

  • Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama was honoured with the 'dPal rNgam Duston' award, the highest civilian honour of Ladakh, for his immense contribution to humanity, especially towards the union territory.
  • The sixth award was conferred by Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh which celebrated the 'dPal rNgam Duston' with great fervour on the occasion of its foundation day at Sindhu Ghat.
  • Ladakh and Tibet are connected by the mighty Indus River along with religious and cultural similarities.

Osmania University Confers Honorary Doctorate on CJI N. V. Ramana

  • Chief Justice of India N. V. Ramana was conferred with a Honoris Causa (honorary) Doctorate at the 82nd convocation of Hyderabad-based Osmania University (OU).
  • The chief guest for the evening, Justice Ramana delivered the convocation address. Governor of Telangana and OU Chancellor Tamilisai Sounderarajan presided over the ceremony.
  • OU Vice-Chancellor Professor D. Ravinder said that two Presidents, three Prime Ministers, four judges and six eminent foreign personalities were among the 47 honorary doctorates the century-old university awarded in the past.
