World Basketball Day

Every year on December 21, World Basketball Day is observed to honour the development and significance of a sport that has inspired millions of people worldwide. Basketball transcends boundaries, cultures, and languages, promoting values such as athleticism, joy, companionship, and peace. The celebration of this day highlights basketball's role in fostering collaboration, physical activity, and interdependence, encouraging players and fans alike to view one another first and foremost as fellow human beings.
Basketball was invented on December 21, 1891, by Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian physical education teacher at the International YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA. Naismith's goal was to create a game that would keep his students physically active during the harsh winter months. His innovative idea gave rise to a sport that would eventually gain global popularity.
The global significance of basketball was officially acknowledged by the United Nations General Assembly on August 25, 2023, through the adoption of resolution A/RES/77/324. This resolution declared December 21 as World Basketball Day, celebrating the sport's ability to bring together people from all walks of life.

Haryana Assembly Passes Resolution on Guru Tegh Bahadur’s 350th Martyrdom Year

On the opening day of the winter session, the Haryana Legislative Assembly unanimously passed a resolution to commemorate the 350th martyrdom year of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, the ninth Sikh Guru. Speaker Nayab Singh Saini announced the decision, citing the Guru’s life as a symbol of truth and human dignity. The government emphasised the enduring importance of his teachings for civilisational values and social harmony. The resolution aligns with state efforts to promote cultural and religious heritage, while encouraging inclusive education and public remembrance of historical figures who shaped Indian civilisation.

International Human Solidarity Day Observed Globally on December 20, 2025

International Human Solidarity Day is observed globally on 20 December each year to highlight unity and cooperation for social and economic progress. The United Nations established the observance through the 60/209 resolution in 2005, creating the World Solidarity Fund to combat poverty and promote shared development. The 2025 theme is Solidarity for Sustainable Development: Uniting Communities for a Shared Future. Governments, civil society, and individuals are encouraged to collaborate across sectors to reduce inequalities and enhance dignity. The day emphasizes practical actions to support human development and resilience in communities nationwide and worldwide.

Indian Cultural Congress 2025 to be held in Kochi

Kochi will host the Indian Cultural Congress 2025, a three‑day assembly highlighting India’s arts and culture. The event, organized by multiple bodies in association with the Department of Culture, is scheduled to begin on 20 December 2025 and run through 22 December. Inaugural ceremonies will be held at Subhash Park, Rajendra Maidan, and Durbar Hall Ground, with additional programs at Kerala Fine Arts Hall. Other venues include TK Ramakrishnan Cultural Centre, Maharaja’s College, Chavara Cultural Centre, and the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi. The congress aims to showcase traditional and contemporary Indian arts, literature, music, dance, and theatre through a series of performances and discussions.
