EU Eases Norm to Offer Indians Multiple Entry Schengen Visa

  • In a major reprieve for Indian travellers seeking to visit Europe during the upcoming holiday season, the European Union will now offer multiple entry Schengen visas with longer validity. As EU eases the visa norms, frequent Indian travellers will now be able to apply for five-year multiple entry visas, which puts them at par with "visa-free nationals"
  • As per the European Union, Indian nationals can now be issued long-term, multi-entry Schengen visas valid for two years after having obtained and used two visas in the past three years.
  • European Union's ambassador to India Herve Delphin described the new visa regime as another step towards enhancing people-to-people contact between the two sides.

Nepal Launches First International Rainbow Tourism Conference

  • The first International Rainbow Tourism Conference was held, with Nepal offering itself as a safe and respectful destination in South Asia for the sexual minority community. The single-day international conference was organised by Mayako Pahichan Nepal, a non-governmental organisation. "This pioneer event organised by Mayako Pahichan Nepal in collaboration with Nepal Tourism Board marked a significant milestone in promoting diversity and inclusivity within the tourism industry.
  • The conference's main objective is to position Nepal as an LGBT-friendly tourism destination. The international conference was inaugurated by Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens, Bhagawati Chaudhary, who underlined the need to forge collaboration among different stakeholders to promote LGBT tourism in Nepal.

Delhi Airport Ranks among World's Busiest Airports for 2023

  • The Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) in Delhi was among the top 10 busiest airports in the world, according to new rankings released by the Airports Council International (ACI).
  • Catering to 72.2 million passengers in the year 2023, the IGI airport was ranked number 10 on the list.
  • The top ten airports in the list are: Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, Dubai International Airport, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, Heathrow Airport (LHR), Tokyo Haneda International Airport (HND), Denver International Airport (DEN), Istanbul Airport (IST), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Chicago's O'Hare International Airport (ORD) and Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL).

Bengaluru International Airport Records Highest Passenger Traffic in FY23

  • Kempegowda International Airport witnessed the highest-ever annual passenger traffic and cargo numbers, with a total of 37.53 million passengers traversing through its terminals and 4,39,524 metric tonne of cargo passing through the airport during the financial year 2023-24.
  • The airport catered to 32.86 million domestic and 4.67 million international passengers during this period.

Air India, BIAL Sign Agreement to Develop Bengaluru Airport as Hub

  • Air India and Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) signed a pact to develop the Bengaluru airport as an aviation hub, encompassing the construction of a dedicated domestic lounge, expansion of international services, and establishment of a maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility.
  • Air India (along with other Tata Group airlines – AIX and Vistara) and BIAL will collaborate to enhance international connectivity, operational efficiency, and passenger experience over the next five years.
  • Air India is wholly owned by the Tata Group, while AIX Connect and Air India Express are its wholly-owned subsidiaries. Vistara, a 51:49 joint venture between the Tata Group and Singapore Airlines, is currently undergoing a merger into Air India. The Bengaluru airport is operated by Fairfax-run BIAL.
