IIM Lucknow Appoints Prof Manmohan Prasad Gupta as New Director

  • Prof. Manmohan Prasad Gupta was appointed as the director of the Indian Institute of Management Lucknow (IIM Lucknow). Professor He succeeded Professor Archana Shukla. Professor Shukla finished her five-year term on April 4 last year (2024) and was directed to continue till the appointment of a regular director.
  • Manmohan Prasad Gupta had received a PhD from IIT Delhi.
  • IIM Lucknow was set up in 1984 as the fourth IIM by the Government of India. IIM Lucknow offers post-graduate diploma, fellowship and executive programs in management. The institute is ranked seventh in the category of "Management" in the NIRF 2024 rankings.

Committees for VC Appointment & Faculty Recruitment: Odisha Governor Gives Assent to University Bill

  • With Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati giving his assent, the Odisha University (Amendment) Act, 2024, came into effect, marking a significant reform in the state's higher education sector. The Odisha University bill was passed after extensive deliberation in the Odisha Assembly.
  • According to the provision of the Odisha University act, the recruitment of faculty in universities will not be conducted through the Odisha Public Service Commission (OPSC). Instead, universities will form a committee comprising educationists for faculty recruitment.
  • Regarding the appointment of vice-chancellors, the Odisha University act has provision of forming a three-member committee for the selection of the VCs. Only distinguished educationists from the field of higher education will be part of this committee. The age limit for VCs has been increased from 67 to 70 years.
  • The new Odisha University Act also ensured the reintroduction of the Senate in universities. The senate is the highest advisory body of a university, comprising educationists, faculty, students, and administrative staff, and it plays a vital role in the development of the university and the higher education sector.

Vineet Joshi Appointed as Interim UGC Chairperson

  • The Ministry of Education gave an additional charge to Vineet Joshi, the current Secretary of the Department of Higher Education. He was appointed as the interim chairperson of the University Grants Commission (UGC). This decision was taken following the retirement of the previous UGC chairman, Prof Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar. Joshi will discharge his duties as UGC chairperson till a full-time appointment is made or until further orders are issued.
  • A BTech in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, Joshi is an alumnus of the institute.

Medical Body Introduces Major Changes in NEET 2025 Exam

  • The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has made a significant change in the NEET-MDS 2025 exam pattern. According to the new notice, the question paper will be divided into two timed parts -- Part A and Part B.
  • Part A will consist of 100 questions and 75 minutes of time. Part B will consist of 140 questions and 105 minutes of time. Above all, the candidates won't be able to proceed to the next part until the time for the previous part is expired. After a section is done, they will not be permitted to go back to it and make any kind of changes. The next section will automatically get open after the time expires.
  • This is part of a sequence of actions being taken by NBEMS to increase exam security and maintain fairness. The limited-duration pattern will now be implemented in all NBEMS computer-based exams, including NEET-PG, NEET-SS, FMGE, DNB-PDCET, GPAT, DPEE, FDST, and FET.
