National Mountain Climbing Day

National Mountain Climbing Day, observed annually on August 1, is a day dedicated to honouring the spirit of adventure and the remarkable achievements of mountaineers. This special day was established to commemorate the accomplishments of Bobby Matthews and Josh Madigan, who successfully scaled all 46 peaks of the Adirondack Mountains in North-eastern New York. Their final ascent of Whiteface Mountain on August 1, 2015, marked the completion of this impressive feat and inspired the creation of this national day of recognition.

World Breastfeeding Week

World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is a global campaign to raise awareness and galvanise action on themes related to breastfeeding. It is celebrated from August 1 to 7 August every year.
WBW started in 1992, with annual themes including healthcare systems, women and work, the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes, community support, ecology, economy, science, education, and human rights.
Since 2016, WBW is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In 2018, a World Health Assembly resolution endorsed WBW as an important breastfeeding promotion strategy.
The 2024 World Breastfeeding Week, under the theme 'Closing the gap: Breastfeeding support for all', UNICEF and WHO are emphasising the need to improve breastfeeding support as a critical action for reducing health inequity and protecting the rights of mothers and babies to survive and thrive.

World Lung Cancer Day

World Lung Cancer Day is observed annually on August 1.
The observance of World Lung Cancer Day began in 2012 when the Forum of International Respiratory Societies (FIRS) and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) jointly decided to dedicate August 1 to raising awareness about lung cancer. Since its inception, this day has played a crucial role in educating the public about the disease and promoting healthier lifestyle choices.
The theme for World Lung Cancer Day 2024 is 'Close the care gap: Everyone deserves access to cancer care'. This powerful message emphasises the importance of equitable access to lung cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment for all individuals, regardless of their socioeconomic status or geographical location.

World Ranger Day

Every year World Ranger Day is celebrated on July 31 to commemorate Rangers who have been injured or killed in the line of duty.
The first World Ranger Day took place in 2007, the date represented the 15th anniversary of when the IRF was founded. IRF stands for the International Ranger Federation. This organisation was founded in 1992. It was founded when the SCRA (Scottish Countryside Rangers Association), ANPR (US Association of National Park Rangers) and the CMA (Countryside Management Association, the association that represents rangers in Wales and England) got together to sign a joint agreement. Rangers are the first ones to indulge in a fight to protect our natural heritage around the world.
The theme for 2024 World Ranger Day is '30 by 30', which is based on the 2022 United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15), where world leaders and decision-makers agreed to a Global Biodiversity Framework.

International Friendship Day

International Friendship Day is observed on July 30. This day honours friends and their important role in improving our lives.
The day was proclaimed in 2011 by the United Nations General Assembly. They wanted to promote the idea that friendship between peoples, countries, cultures and individuals can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities.
Each year, International Friendship Day is celebrated with a specific theme that highlights different aspects of friendship. This year (2024), the theme for International Friendship Day is 'Embracing Diversity, Fostering Unity' by the United Nations. This theme emphasises the importance of creating connections and understanding between people from diverse backgrounds, fostering a spirit of unity and cooperation.

World Day Against Trafficking in Persons

The 30th of July marks the annual World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, a crucial observance that brings global attention to the ongoing fight against human trafficking.
In 2013, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/68/192 designated July 30 as the World Day against Trafficking in Persons and declared that such a day was necessary to raise awareness of the situation of victims of human trafficking and for the promotion and protection of their rights.
This year's (2024) theme, 'Leave No Child Behind in the Fight Against Human Trafficking', underscores the urgent need to protect one of society's most vulnerable groups: children.

International Tiger Day is celebrated on July 29, with a focus on raising awareness about tiger conservation and the urgent threats these majestic animals face, such as habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict.
The inception of Global Tiger Day, also known as International Tiger Day, can be traced back to 2010. It was during the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit that this significant day was established.
