After Tejas, India Moves Ahead to Procure more MiG-29s & Sukhois

India is now formally moving ahead to procure 21 MiG-29 and 12 Sukhoi-30MKI fighters from Russia, along with upgrades of their existing fleets, after the Cabinet Committee on Security approved the production of 83 indigenous Tejas jets.
For starters, the RFP (request for proposal) for the 21 MiG-29 fighters, whose bare airframes are lying in a mothballed condition in Russia since the later-1980s, will soon be issued to Russian state-run defence export arm Rosoboronexport, said defence sources on Sunday.
The acquisition of these MiG-29s at "relatively lower prices" will add to 59 such jets already with IAF. The 12 Sukhoi-30MKIs, in turn, will add to the 272 such jets already contracted from Russia for about $15 billion, with the bulk of them being licensed produced by Hindustan Aeronautics. IAF has so far inducted 268 of the original 272 Sukhois, with at least nine of them being lost in crashes over the years.

IAF Announces Induction of Astra

The Indian Air Force (IAF) announced the induction of the indigenous, 110-km range Beyond Visual Range (BVR) air-to-air-missile, Astra.
The Astra fills up the critical air-to-air missile gap vis-a-vis Pakistan, which was exposed during the post-Balakot aerial confrontation over the Line of Control on February 27 last year.
The 110-km range of the Astra neutralises Pakistan's advantage over India in air-to-air weaponry.
The Astra is capable of engaging both short-range targets at a distance of 20 km and long-range targets up to a distance of 80-110 km at varying altitudes.
The Astra is India's first indigenous air-to-air missile. The features of this all-weather BVR include mid-course inertial guidance with terminal active radar homing.

Bharat Dynamics and Thales Partner to Manufacture STARStreak Air Defence System

Bharat Dynamics and Thales have signed a Teaming Agreement to work in partnership on the STARStreak Air Defence system with the support of both the Governments of India and the United Kingdom.
The Teaming Agreement was signed at a virtual ceremony held on 13 January 2021.
BDL will become a part of the STARStreak global supply chain, providing the opportunity for export of the system to existing and future STARStreak Air Defence customers, including the UK Armed Forces through this agreement.
BDL, as a part of its Global Outreach, is endeavouring to forge alliance with foreign companies to take the "Make in India" mission further.
Earlier, Thales and BDL have signed a "Memorandum of Understanding‟ to assess the opportunity for the transfer of technology for STARStreak.

India's First Indigenous 9 mm Machine Pistol Co-developed by DRDO, Army

India developed its first indigenous 9 mm machine pistol, the Defence Ministry informed that the machine gun was co-developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Army.
The Army's infantry school in Mhow and the DRDO's Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) in Pune have designed and developed the weapon.

Cabinet Approves Procurement Deal of 83 Tejas

The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) approved procurement of 83 Tejas aircraft at a cost of about Rs. 48,000 crore from the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). The deal is considered to be the biggest ever in the indigenous military aviation sector.
As per Defence Minister Rajnath, This deal will be a game changer for self reliance in the Indian defence manufacturing.
The LCA-Tejas is going to be the backbone of the IAF fighter fleet in years to come. LCA-Tejas incorporates a large number of new technologies many of which were never attempted in India. The indigenous content of LCA-Tejas is 50% in Mk1A variant which will be enhanced to 60%.
The HAL has already set-up second line manufacturing facilities at its Nasik and Bengaluru Divisions. Equipped with the augmented infrastructure the HAL will steer LCA-Mk1A production for timely deliveries to the IAF.
