IAF set to Raise Second Squadron of Rafale Jets in Hasimara

The Indian Air Force is set to raise a second squadron of the Rafale combat aircraft in mid-April and it will be based in Hasimara air base in West Bengal.
The first squadron of the Rafale jets is stationed at Ambala Air Force station. The first batch of five Rafale jets arrived in India on July 29 last, nearly four years after India signed an inter-governmental agreement with France to procure 36 of the aircraft at a cost of Rs. 59,000 crore.
The formal induction ceremony of the fleet had taken place at Ambala in September 2020.

Myanmar Junta Removes Arakan Army from Terrorist List

Myanmar's military junta has removed Arakan Army (AA) insurgents from its list of terrorist groups because the faction has stopped attacks and in order to help establish peace across the country.
The move comes at a time the army is struggling to contain daily protests against its Feb. 1 coup in which elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi was overthrown.
The AA is fighting for greater autonomy in the western Rakhine state and over the past two years had become one of the most formidable forces in challenging an army that has been fighting various ethnic wars for some seven decades.
The AA group had been placed on the list of terrorist groups last year under Suu Kyi's government.

France Conducts First Military Drills in Space

France has begun its first military exercises in space to test its ability to defend its satellites, in a sign of the growing competition between world powers in Earth's orbit.
Michel Friedling, the head of France's newly created Space Command, called the exercises a "stress test of our systems" and said that they were a first for the French army and even a first in Europe.
Codenamed "AsterX" in a nod to the first French satellite Asterix from 1965, the drills will simulate the monitoring of a potentially dangerous space object, as well as a threat to a satellite.
The new US Space Force and German space agencies are taking part in the French exercises.

New Defence PRO Takes Charge

Commander Atul Pillai has assumed charge as Defence Public Relations Officer in Kochi, replacing Captain Sridhar Warrier.
Pillai is an alumnus of the erstwhile Naval Academy, Panjim in Goa, and has undergone specialisation in Gunnery and Missile Warfare at INS Dronacharya, Fort Kochi.
He is a native of Kayamkulam Kerala. He has previously worked as instructor at INS Dronacharya, and as executive officer of INS Suvarna at Karwar.

India to Buy US Armed Drones

India plans to buy 30 armed drones from the U.S. to boost its sea and land defence as tensions persist with neighbours China and Pakistan.
India will approve next month the $3 billion purchase of 30 MQ-9B Predator drones manufactured by San Diego-based General Atomics, the officials said, asking not to be identified speaking with the media. The deal would add to India's military capabilities as the drones it has now can only be used for surveillance and reconnaissance.
India is emerging as a strategic defence partner for the U.S., particularly in countering Chinese influence in the Indian Ocean and some areas of Southeast Asia. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government is in the midst of a 10-year, $250 billion military modernisation.
The MQ-9B drone can fly for about 48 hours and carry a payload of about 1,700 kg.

Indian Navy Signs Contract with Suryadipta Projects

The Indian Navy has signed a contract with Suryadipta Projects to construct 11 ammunition-cum-torpedo-cum-missile (ACTCM) barges.
Suryadipta ProjectsPrivate Limited is a Thane-based MSME.
Delivery of barges is scheduled to commence from May 22. The ACTCM barges will be inducted in Indian Navy to undertake the mission needs for embarking or disembarking ammunition, torpedo, missile, etc. it mentioned.
