NSG Commandos Undertake Counter-terrorist Drills

Multiple cities in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and the National Capital Region hosted synchronised commando drills as part of a national mock exercise being carried out by the counter-terrorist force National Security Guard (NSG) to check its response time and reaction to hostage and hijack-like situations.
The third edition of the week-long annual exercise called 'Gandiv' was launched at these locations by the NSG from August 22 and concluded on August 28.
Gandiv was the name of Arjuna's bow in Mahabharata.
The exercise covered potential targets in the NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat depicting multiple cities, multiple targets scenario cumulatively covering about 30-35 targets.

China, Pakistan, Thailand and Mongolia to Hold Military Exercise

The militaries of China, Pakistan, Mongolia and Thailand will take part in a multinational peacekeeping exercise to be organised by the People's Liberation Army in the country's central Henan province next month.
The four countries will take part in the first multinational peacekeeping live exercise "Shared Destiny-2021" at the combined-arms tactical training base of the PLA in Henan's Queshan County from September 6 to 15.
All the four countries will dispatch more than 1,000 troops to participate in the drills, involving units of infantry, fast response, security, helicopter, engineering, transportation and medical services.
The scenario of the exercise is joint operations of multinational peacekeeping forces and the exercise will be held in a close-to-real battlefield environment set in accordance with the international, professional and realistic combat standards.

Rajnath Singh to Commission Coast Guard's Offshore Patrol Vessel Vigraha

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will commission offshore patrol vessel Vigraha of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) in Chennai.
The ship will be based in Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and operate on the eastern seaboard under the operational and administrative control of the Commander, Coast Guard Region (East).
The 98-meter vessel, with a complement of 11 officers and 110 sailors, has been designed and built indigenously by Larsen & Toubro Ship Building Limited.
The vessel is fitted with advanced technology radars, navigation and communication equipment, sensors and machinery capable of operating in tropical sea conditions.

25th Malabar Exercise

Indian Navy participated in the sea phase of Exercise Malabar in August 2021 along with the US Navy (USN), Japanese Maritime Self Defence Force (JMSDF), and the Royal Australian Navy (RAN).
The 25th edition of ex-Malabar was hosted by the US Navy in the Western Pacific.
Malabar Exercise commenced in 1992 between India and the United States.
In 2015, the Japanese Maritime Self Defence Force (JMSDF) joined Malabar as a permanent member.
The 2020 edition witnessed the participation of the Royal Australian Navy.
The Indian Navy's participation includes INS Shivalik and INS Kadmatt and P8I patrol aircraft. The US Navy was represented by USS Barry, USNS Rappahannock, USNS Big Horn and P8A patrol aircraft.
The Japanese Maritime Self Defence Force was represented by JS Kaga, Murasame and Shiranui, in addition to a submarine and P1 patrol aircraft. The Royal Australian Navy was represented by HMAS Warramunga.
The Malabar-21 witnessed complex exercises including anti-surface, anti-air and anti-submarine warfare drill, and other manoeuvres and tactical exercises.

Pankaj Kumar Singh is New BSF DG

Pankaj Kumar Singh, a 1988-batch Indian Police Service officer, was appointed as director general of BSF.
Singh is a Rajasthan cadre officer and is presently serving as the special director general (DG) of the force that guards over 6,300 km of the Indian fronts with Pakistan and Bangladesh.
He will take charge on August 31 after the retirement of IPS officer and ITBP DG S. S. Deswal, who is holding additional charge of the BSF DG after the tenure of Gujarat cadre officer Rakesh Asthana ended in July.

Pakistan Successfully Tests Fatah-1 Rocket System

Pakistan conducted a successful test-flight of indigenously-developed Fatah-1 (Guided Multi Launch Rocket System), capable of delivering a conventional warhead.
The new weapon system will give the army the ability of precise target engagement deep inside the enemy territory. The President, Prime Minister of Pakistan, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and Chief of Army Staff congratulated the participating troops and scientists on successful conduct of flight test.

Lockheed Martin Gets $328 mn Contract from IAF

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has awarded US aerospace giant Lockheed Martin a $328.8 million, five-year contract to provide comprehensive maintenance support for India's fleet of 12 C-130J Super Hercules tactical airlifter aircraft.
Lockheed Martin manufactures the highly regarded Super Hercules transport aircraft, which is flown by 26 operators in 22 nations.
The arrangement announced is called a "Follow On Support-II" (FOS-II) contract.

Indian Army Replaces World War Era Grenades

The Indian Army received the first batch of the Multi-Mode Hand Grenades (MMHG) in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in Nagpur. The Ministry of Defence said that MMHG will replace 'Grenade No 36' of the World War I vintage design, which had been continuing in service to date.
The Multi-Mode Hand Grenades have been manufactured by Economic Explosives Limited (EEL).
The EEL had signed a contract with the Ministry of Defence in October 2020, to supply 10 lakh modern hand grenades for the Indian Army and Indian Air Force. The deliveries would be spread over two years from the bulk production clearance, which was accorded to EEL in March 2021.
