India to be Part of 17-nation Drill in Australia

  • India will be among the 17 nations scheduled to carry out a three-week-long military exercise in the Northern Territory of Australia. Over 100 aircraft and 2,500 military personnel will be part of the drill.
  • Named "Pitch Black 2022", the exercise will be held between August 19 and September 8. The event is being conducted after a four-year hiatus. The participants include the US, India, Australia, Japan, Canada, France, Germany, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, the Netherlands, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, the UAE and the UK. All Quadrilateral countries – India, Japan, Australia and the US — are on the list. Key NATO countries like the UK, France and Germany will also be part of the event.

Third India-Vietnam Bilateral Army Exercise "Ex VINBAX 2022" Begins in Haryana

  • The 3rd edition of Vietnam-India Bilateral Army Exercise "Ex VINBAX 2022" is conducted at Chandimandir, Haryana from August 1 to 20, 2022. The theme of Ex VINBAX 2022 is the "Employment and deployment of an Engineer Company and a Medical Team as part of United Nations Contingent for Peace Keeping Operations". The exercise would further strengthen the bilateral relations between India and Vietnam.
  • The exercise is a sequel to previously conducted bilateral exercise in Vietnam in 2019 and a major milestone in strengthening the bilateral relations between India and Vietnam. India and Vietnam share a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and defence cooperation is a key pillar of this partnership. Vietnam is an important partner in India's Act East policy and the Indo-Pacific vision.

India and Oman to Carry Out 13-Day Military Exercise in Rajasthan

  • India and Oman started a nearly two-week military exercise, with a focus on counter-terror cooperation.
  • The exercise, 'Al NAJAH-IV', is taking place in the Mahajan field firing ranges in Rajasthan from August 1 to 13.
  • A 60-member team from the Royal Army of Oman arrived at the site of the exercise.
  • The joint military exercise aims to enhance the level of bilateral defence cooperation.
  • The Indian Army is being represented at the exercise by troops from the 18 Mechanised Infantry Battalion. The previous edition of the exercise was organised in Muscat in March 2019.

IISc Bengaluru Signs MoU with Indian Navy for Collaborative Research in Aviation

  • The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru and the Indian Navy signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on aviation research and development and to ramp up self-reliance efforts for the Navy.
  • The MoU provides a formal basis for the Indian Navy to interact with relevant faculty members at IISc and would promote joint research programmes in areas of mutual interest.
  • The MoU was signed by IISc registrar Captain Sridhar Warrier and Captain P. Vinayagam (APP), Indian Navy, in the presence of senior officers of the Navy and the chairs of several departments at the Division of Mechanical Sciences, and the Office of Research Grants at IISc.

Hindustan Aeronautics Signs Deal with Honeywell for Trainer Engines

  • Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) signed a $100 million contract with US engine-maker Honeywell, for 88 engines to power the indigenous Hindustan Turbo Trainer – 40 (HTT-40), on which Army, Navy and Indian Air Force (IAF) pilots will first learn to fly.
  • HAL has successfully developed Basic Trainer Aircraft (HTT-40) to address the basic training requirements of the IAF. There is potential requirement of 70 aircraft. The contract for the same with IAF is under advanced stage of approval.
  • In designing and developing the HTT-40, HAL has proven a point against a sceptical IAF, which opposed the HTT-40, blocked development funding, and demanded that the expensive Pilatus PC-7 Mark-II Swiss trainer be imported and the HTT-40 programme scuttled.

Two Submarine-hunting Copters Arrive from US

  • The first lot of two MH 60R multi-role helicopters, equipped with submarine-hunting capability, arrived at Cochin while a third copter is scheduled to be delivered in August.
  • India and the US, in February 2020, agreed for the sale of 24 such copters at a cost of nearly Rs. 14,000 crore under the framework of foreign military sales.
  • The all-weather helicopters come armed with Hellfire missiles and lethal rocket systems. The helicopter, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, is also fitted with state-of-the-art avionics and sensors to pick out submarines.

India's First Indigenous Aircraft Carrier 'Vikrant' Handed Over to Navy

  • The Cochin Shipyard handed over to the Navy the first indigenous aircraft carrier Vikrant, which was designed by the Navy's in-house Directorate of Naval Design and will likely be commissioned on August 15.
  • It is named after India's first aircraft carrier, the Indian Naval Ship (INS) Vikrant, which played a significant role in the 1971 war. The 262-metre-long carrier has a full displacement of close to 45,000 tonnes, much larger and advanced than her predecessor.
  • The aircraft carrier will be initially with the western naval command.
