Iconic Classical Dancer Yamini Krishnamurthy Passes Away

India lost one of its most revered classical dancers, Yamini Krishnamurthy, who passed away at the age of 83 in New Delhi. Known for her mastery over Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, and Odissi, Krishnamurthy was a luminary who helped elevate Indian classical dance to the global stage.
Krishnamurthy's talent was recognised early in her career. At the young age of 17, she gave her first solo performance in 1957, marking the beginning of a illustrious journey.
Her contributions to Indian classical dance were acknowledged with numerous prestigious awards: Padma Shri in 1968, at the age of 28, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1977, Padma Bhushan in 2001, Padma Vibhushan in 2016.

Super 30 Founder Anand Kumar to be 'Honorary Ambassador of Korea Tourism' for 2024

Super 30 founder Anand Kumar is the 'Honorary Ambassador of Korea Tourism' for 2024. The agreement in this regard was signed by Myong Kil Yun, Regional Director, India and SAARC countries, Korea Tourism Organisation (KTO) and Anand Kumar in New Delhi.
"Kumar, who has been quite popular in South Korea due to his pioneering Super 30 initiative, also saw the best-seller book on his life published in Korean language. The popular movie 'Super 30' was also made on the life of Kumar," said Myong Kil Yun.
The choice of Kumar as the Honorary Ambassador of Korea Tourism is significant to boost ties with Korea through cultural exchanges and opening avenues for students, said, Myong Kil Yun.

Former Indian Cricketer Anshuman Gaekwad Passes Away

Former Indian cricketer and coach Anshuman Gaekwad passed away at the age of 71. Gaekwad played for India for a period of 12 years, from 1975-1987, where the former opening batter represented the national side in 40 Tests and 15 ODIs. He also served as the men's team head coach in two stints (during which India ended as runners-up in 2000 Champions Trophy). In addition, he served as a national selector in the 1990s and the president of the Indian Cricketers' Association.

Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur Appointed IFFI Festival Director

Veteran filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, known for films such as "Mr India", "Bandit Queen" and "Elizabeth", was appointed festival director for the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) to be held from November 20-28, 2024. Mr. Kapur will head the festival, held annually in Goa, for the 55th and 56th editions, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry said in a notification.

Former Indonesia Vice President Hamzah Haz Passes Away

Hamzah Haz, the Vice President of Indonesia from 2001 to 2004, passed away. He was aged 84. Hamzah served under President Megawati Soekarnoputri.
He also served as minister for investment, as well as coordinating minister for people's welfare under previous administrations. He was one of the contenders in the 2004 presidential elections. Hamzah Haz was a key figure in the PPP, one of Indonesia's major Islamic political parties, with his leadership instrumental in shaping the party's policies and direction over the years.

Veteran Marathi Writer Father Francis D'Britto Dies At 81

Vasai-based Catholic priest Father Francis D'Britto, writer and environmentalist, who translated the Bible into Marathi, passed away at the age of 81.
Father Francis D'Britto was born to Marathi-speaking parents, D'Britto's translation of the Bible, named 'Subodh Bible', was re-printed many times. The 'Subodh Bible' has an 80-page section that introduces readers to the Bible.
He was unanimously elected as the president of the 93rd Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan, held at Dharadhiv in 2020, showcasing his profound influence in the literary community.
His literary prowess was further recognised when he received Maharashtra Government's literary award for best translation in 2013, followed by the Sahitya Akademi award in April 2014.
