Henley Passport Index 2023: India Rises Five Spots

  • In the latest ranking published by Henley Passport Index Singapore replaced Japan with having the world's most powerful passport, allowing visa-free entry to 192 global destinations. According to the latest Henley Passport Index, India has shown a substantial improvement in its ranking. The Indian passport improved by five places and is now ranked 80th in the latest Henley Passport Index, and it provides visa-free access to 57 destinations.
  • Germany, Italy, and Spain occupy the second place. Alongside Japan at the third position are Austria, Finland, France, Luxembourg, South Korea, and Sweden. The U.K. climbed two places to occupy the fourth place, while the U.S. continued its decade-long slide down the index, dropping two places to the eighth spot. Both the U.K. and the U.S. jointly held the first place on the index nearly 10 years ago in 2014.
  • Passport Index has become the most popular interactive online tool to display, sort, and rank the world's passports.
  • Notably, the Henley Passport Index, originally created by Dr. Christian H. Kaelin, is based on data provided by the International Air Transport Authority (IATA) and covers 199 passports and 227 travel destinations.
  • It is updated in real-time throughout the year, as and when visa policy changes come into effect.

  • Arunachal Pradesh Tourism Secretary Swapnil Naik launched the Yuva Tourism Club in a function organized by the Ministry of Tourism and Arunachal Pradesh State Tourism Dept at State Food Craft Institute in Itanagar. The Yuva Tourism Club is an initiative by the Ministry of Tourism, to nurture and develop young ambassadors of tourism. It aims at making these young ambassadors to be a catalyst for promoting tourism in India.

Delhi's IGIA Becomes 1st Airport in India with Four Runways & an Elevated Cross Taxiway

  • Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) achieved a significant milestone as it became India's first airport to have four runways. The Civil Aviation Minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia, inaugurated the airport's fourth runway, increasing its throughput capacity from approximately 1400-1500 air traffic movements per day to almost 2000 air traffic movements per day. The addition of the fourth runway will allow the airport to serve more than 109 million passengers annually.
  • The inauguration of the fourth runway and the first eastern cross taxiway (ECT) marked a historic landmark day for Indian civil aviation. The ECT connects the Northern and Southern parts of the airfield, reducing taxi time for aircraft and facilitating passengers' deplaning within 12 minutes of landing. This operational efficiency will contribute to a reduction of almost 55,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually.

TAFI Chapters Conclude AGM & Elections, National Team Signs MoU with Kazakh Tourism

  • Multiple Chapters of the Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI) concluded their Annual General Meeting (AGM) and election process and chose office bearers and members for the new term 2023-25.
  • In another development, the national leadership of the Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kazakh Tourism in Astana to promote tourism between both countries.
  • Jay Kantawala from WIYO Travel was elected as the new Chapter Chairman, while Arun Iyer from Maa Air Ticket Centre was elected as the Secretary. Dharmesh Shah from Dadyson Travels and Satbir Singh Narula from Pyramid Tours & Allied Services were elected as Treasurer and Committee Member, respectively.

British Carrier Virgin Atlantic Ends Operations in Pakistan

  • Virgin Atlantic ended its operations in Pakistan with the last flight of the British carrier taking off from Islamabad to London's Heathrow Airport.
  • The British airline began its operations at Islamabad airport in December 2020 with seven weekly flights. The airline initially operated four flights to Manchester and three to Heathrow Airport.
  • Later, the airline reduced its services to only three weekly flights to Heathrow Airport.
  • Virgin Atlantic provided the best air travel services to customers between Islamabad and London.
