World Biofuel Day

  • World Biofuel Day is observed annually on August 10 to raise awareness about the significance of biofuels as an alternative to conventional fossil fuels. This day serves as a platform to highlight the advancements in biofuel technologies and the policies supporting their adoption globally and in India.
  • World Biofuel Day is observed to honour Sir Rudolf Diesel for his research experiments. In the year 1983, he successfully ran a diesel engine with the help of peanut oil by predicting that vegetable oil would replace fossil fuels in the next century to fuel various mechanical engines.
  • The theme for World Biofuel Day 2024 is 'Sustainable Biofuels: Reducing Waste, Feeding Energy'.

World Lion Day

  • World Lion Day is an international annual event observed on the 10th of August. World Lion Day is celebrated to raise awareness about the conservation and protection of lions. The wild cat 'Asiatic Lion' is considered a vulnerable and endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List
  • World Lion Day was established in 2013 by Big Cat Rescue, the world's largest accredited sanctuary dedicated to lions.
  • It was co-founded by Dereck and Beverly Joubert, a husband-and-wife team who recognised the urgent need to highlight the declining lion populations and the threats they were encountering in their natural habitats.
  • In collaboration with "National Geographic," the Jouberts initiated the Big Cat Initiative (B.C.I.) in 2009.
  • Since then, World Lion Day has been observed annually on August 10. Its purpose is to raise awareness about the conservation challenges faced by lions and to celebrate the beauty and significance of these iconic large felines.

International Day of World's Indigenous People

  • The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) declared this special day in 1994, with resolution 49/214. The UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations met for the first time on this date in 1982. Quit India Movement Day

  • Quit India Movement Day observed annually on August 8, also known as August Kranti Day, is a significant date in India's history that commemorates the launch of the Quit India Movement in 1942. This pivotal moment in India's struggle for independence from British colonial rule called for the immediate withdrawal of British forces from India. Led by Mahatma Gandhi, the movement mobilised millions of Indians in a non-violent civil disobedience campaign against British colonialism.
  • On August 8, 1942, during the All India Congress Committee session in Bombay (now Mumbai), the Quit India Resolution was adopted. This resolution demanded an immediate end to British rule in India. It was during this session that Mahatma Gandhi gave his famous 'Do or Die' speech, which became the rallying cry for the movement.
